I know this might be out of context but to me it's kinda sad that splinter (mostly) doesn't remember his own sons names half the time so he just calls them by there color, but when it's serious situations he calls them by ther nickname or full name
See, I thought so too, until S1 progressed and I internalized that splinter is an asian dad, and I realize- He definitely knows their names. The colours are the first names he ever gave them. He used them to distinguish the turtles as babies and even when they get real names he still calls them by their childhood nicknames. *Because* they're his kids. I'm sure it's the same for other groups, but from personal experience, I noticed that asians especially would nickname their children (either with dimunitives or something... not even remotely sounding like their names.) and that name stays in the family, and their parents would still call them that even when they've grown up. E.g. my dad's name is Nero. His childhood nickname is Eman, which is a significantly more common real local name. It's like going from Carlisle to John, which is weird but happens a lot. He's fifty and everyone in his family still calls him Eman, even my cousins call him uncle Eman, because that's who he is to his family. It's like the whole 'asian parent giving kids some fruit' thing, just a different kind of showing affection! It's saying "I knew you as a child, and I got to watch you grow. No matter where you go you will always be mine." without saying it ya know. The patented asian way of not-saying-the-L-word-out-loud. All that said, splinter really wasn't the best dad. He got better over the course of the show, but ay we can see that he was rather... hands-off. Seems like as the turtles grow to be more self-sufficient children his depression won out and he just kinda shut down. Of course, this lack of verbal affirmation (along with a myriad of other things such as the isolation) manifests in the turtles developing some issues with parental support and general self-doubt or anxiety. Which tracks with asian-household kids LOL Not to mention asian names tend to be very literal at times? Like people are just named after stuff like the sun, thunder, dragons. Colours. I know someone whose chinese first name is literally just Red. So I can see why splinter didn't bat an eye really.
@@sapphirewings8638 I've had a lot of thoughts about this. Especially since the creators did say they wanted to spotlight families of mixed cultures in the show. As a mixed person myself I find a lot of the subtle details to be quite insightful!
@@mostlyimpulsive3462 this is so true oh my god!! my mom had nicknamed me and my sisters after our chinese new year animals, and she still calls us them daily. it really is like saying “i love you” without actually saying it!! since i was born in the year of the rat, she’ll call me “con chuot”, meaning mouse or rat in vietnamese. thank you for the theory which i am now grabbing and consuming because im now taking it as cannon

Imma just say that the apritello ship is just flat out GROSS. April is older than Donnie. Search it up if u don't believe me. She 16 and Despite his height, Donnie is 14.
I think the main reason apritello turns me off is because she is so very clearly an honorary fifth turtle in this version, not to mention a literal official member of the hamato clan by s2. She is their sister in the truest sense, in the way that matters. A 2 year age gap on its own isn't strange at all for adults (which these guys aren't), though I suppose yearly differences are a lot more pronounced when one's in their teens. It's the different mental development speeds.
That's a 2 year age gap...? What's wrong with that? They're both still teenagers. And I am 2 years older than my boyfriend, so I don't see the problem there...?
