That does explain everything. Also fits with his extroverted twin Leo as he's both a huge attention whore as well as clever and cunning, being able to manipulate his enemies into positions that let him win.

You know what I noticed.
In the episode where Donnie made his brothers smart as him and then regrets it later on because his brothers weren't their usual selves and his designs made him unique outta the group and feel useful.
In the 2014/2016 version. Can't remember which movie it was but Leo wished that his brothers think the same way as him, so they would understand how he felt or be on the same page. But Splinter told him, that his brothers didn't need to think the same as him because then they wouldn't have there own fighting styles but because of this it could help them win battles and because it all made them special in different ways.
Anyways I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought this. Just thought it would be cool to share

@jazzy arts 2012 is the 3D version I'm not sure if they brought the subject up in any of the episodes. But it was in the 2016 bayverse version. It's when Donnie found out the ooze can make them human but Leo declined and wished to never bring it to his brothers attention. Mikey eavesdrop, told Raph, he confronted Leo and that's when Leo walked off angry and Splinter had the talk with Leo.

It was in the 2016 movie. That roast they had for each other in the plane was brutal. Yes, Leo had been known to be a jerk at times. Even back in the 87 cartoon there were times he went bs, and even started with Raph.. till Leo backed off being intimidated by Raph. And this was in the first cartoon too.
I have autism AND adhd, so I can relate to practically all of the characters. But I find that Donnie is the most relatable.

I just love Donnie so much in Rise....he really reminds me of me, and he represents me. I'm autistic, and the writers confirmed Donnie is autistic, too, and they intended this characterization for Donnie from the start. That, and how Donnie is throughout the series and movie really validates me and my whole existence. It makes me feel like I'm not alone anymore.
Sorry this is weirdly deep, but i just love the representation through Donnie, and representation is EVERYTHING to me. The writers knew what they were doing.

Not sure if autistic BUT I definitely relate to the hate for people moving around my stuff, loving solitude to think and make my creations (fanfic), and sometimes wondering about my ability to feel emotion in reaction to things. I definitely placed a lot of self esteem in being smart when I was a kid too.

Literally same! The writers even confirmed he's on the spectrum and intended that from the start of Rise's production! I'm on the spectrum myself, and if I'm being honest, the writers really knew what they were doing, and Donnie represents me and validates my entire existence. I've never seen more realistic yet positive and accepting representation before.

I wasn't sure about Rise Donnie at first, but everything changed when I learned he was autistic. It's not that he doesn't care, he just has trouble with emotions and other odd little quirks that relate to his disorder. Plus, I'm autistic, so having a kindred soul in one of my favorite fandoms was awesome!

Fun fact, I’ve been on my zelda shit since 2020 and just recently gained my obsession with Rise last winter. I remember around the time I first realized that rise wasn’t just a passing interest I had just thought to myself “How the fuck did I go from this epic high fantasy having discussions of the morality of gods and the nature of free will and destiny, to “haha funny turtles go brrrr”.”
Still don’t got an answer for that one.

I love Owl House and like Amphibia (I came too late but what I saw of Amphibia's characters, the calamity girls are SO lovable), I am interested in the Zelda lore though I haven't played the games, and I could probably have done a COLLEGE LECTURE about ATLA back when it was on if you allowed me to.

I actually ended up watching the show because someone mentioned that Donnie was good autism representation, funny how that worked out.
The fact that they confirmed Donnie to be autistic, as well as the fact that Ben Schwartz voiced Leo, is what got me into Rise to begin with, around the time the movie came out. I've never seen such realistic yet positive and accepting representation before. Donnie legitimately represents me and my whole existence, down to the stims and hyperfixations I get into. I'm autistic myself, and truthfully, Rise makes me feel seen for the very first time

The scene of Donnie being left without his comfort items for the first time is what a meltdown would look like for a person with autism if not used the new environment or thing
I'm like that too. Adaptation Adjusting and Change with out something or someone that holds a sense of security and nostalgia isn't easy for me either. I tend to hold ppl and things I've had too close. If I didn't, I wouldn't feel comfortable and withdraw out of places situations and events. New things or new ppl coming into the equation with me take time and experience to be accepted.
Literally SAME!! That's what tends to happen with me, especially when my routines or plans are ruptured or interrupted badly enough. Sometimes, my meltdowns get pretty nasty....

That's why when I find adjusting to new situations or environments, I need a heads up well in advance.

About Donnie going into his shell… perhaps that can be explained by the fact that that’s not his real shell? I’ve seen clips of when he takes it off and we see a different (softer) shell underneath.
He does have his battle shell to cover his soft shell but he still is going into his real shell in that scene. Its a cartoon tho so i guess it doesn’t really matter lmao
