Your work is fantastic... especially adding the battle damage in layers. Not sure if anyone mentioned it but you have the (Biggs Darklighter's ship) Red 3 wing markings. Red 3... 3 stripes. Luke Skywalker's ship has 5 stripes. Red 5... 5 stripes.
Just completed my red 5 using your decals from a professional printers on sticky back vinyl. Could not be more happy. Thanks for the fantastic resource you provide. Happy to pay for any further ones you provide, they are top quality. Keep your great videos and files coming. Love your work.
I purchased this custom red five set from you!! I used white Vinyl sticker paper to print these, and coated them with matte lacquer!! it is awesome..You Da Man, Dave!! Thank you.
Hi - first off can I say your videos on vintage star wars re-builds and restorations are second to none in my opinion and thanks so much for the numerous tips and advice I have gained from them! .. I'm a fanatic diorama builder so have referenced you tonnes . I was about to say about the stripes being only three when they should be five - when I read the below comments!! - might be something to update on the decal sheet though! ..a tip I can offer regarding the hair peroxide is that it (like bleach) is chemically activated by heat - hence why you used to see all the old girls sitting with their heads in the darlek hair dryers at the hair salon - so a gentle pass over with hairdryer will provide the same results in minutes without having to apply multiple applications over days - hope that helps! - other than that loving it all & thanks again for the great work - keep it up man ! ;-)
+jaytv777 Great tip, thanks. I don't mind the waiting bit as I often have multiple projects on the go. But sometimes it would be nice to happen faster. Cheers
@Toy Polloi I have my childhood x-wing and my brother's (he doesn't care about his old toys). Between the two of them I was able to save my original stickers and complete mine with parts from both. The other one just needs one wing set, landing strut, guns and canopy to complete but the stickers are trashed from mold growing on them. So I cleaned it up following your videos and decided to make it the Red 5 with your stickers (I can actually print a second label sheet and cut out two extra stripes and fit them between the raised details to give it the five), and keep mine as a stand in for Red 3 (Biggs, as his figure is coming from Smith Lord Creations soon). When ordering replacement parts for the custom Red 5, I got another beaten up R2 button and will be painting that to look similar to R2-Q2 but keep my original R2 for swapping back to originality when needed. Now it has me interested in completing the four hero X-Wings of Star Wars by getting two more to make Red 2 (SLC Wedge is coming out too) and Red Leader. I'm terrible at Photoshop tho....do you think you might create those custom label sheets on a future project? Thanks.
Now have to install LED lighting for the engines and airbrush the scorch marks etc on the engines and blast points. Excellent vid and so well presented. I wish I had access to the tips and advice you provide years ago
I enjoyed this series on how to restore an X-wing fighter. I look forward to putting these tips to use for the X-wing and related parts I just bought from eBay. Question: Is there any way you can do a video where you teach us how to do build our own, reproduction (repro) X-wing canopy? The canopy I bought ($28.99) cost more than the main body (fuselage and wings) that I bought for $14.99, not including shipping. The canopy parts are so hard to find and expensive as a result. Thank you for your consideration. -Tony Prado in America, a Kenner Star Wars toys fan since 1977.
Actually there is. The 1995 potf x wing uses this same exact mold. it has the 5 red stripes on the wings lower and upper. Just thought I would mention this...cool custom work ..nice job!
Very nice. What do you thing of adding the, sort of candy cane markings on the wing blasters? (which also look like how they used to paint knights' lances in medieval times)
Nice "overhaul" again. I use the same creme technique to brighten my vehicles, only I wrap them in kitchen foil to let the chemicals don't vaporize. I didn't knew you could just let it be without the sun though. I thought it had to have UV light ? Will try this next week, since I haven't done any brightening due to the lack of sun here these days :)
It seems to work well. I use cling film on larger vehicles. On this is was just easier to wash it off each time. Gave me more control as to the final colour.
Are you going to do a different sticker application on the other X-wings droid? It looks a bit out of place when you sit them down beside each other considering there is really only one R2 Unit and it's always on Luke's of course. It's just something I noticed and I think would make the ship stand out more. But over all great job, I'd like to see a modernized sticker/paint scheme from the force awakens on an older Kenner model. Poe's blue ship from the opening scenes would be really cool redone in a vintage style.
Can i just ask if you are / were going to add the 5 stripes for Red Five on to the ship, rather than the three strips on the wings - which indicate Red three? Please son't get me wrong - your interp of old school original stickers is spot on, just niggled that not five stripes. Love your work and brings the nostalgia straight back as someone who saw Star Wars as a six year old, and grew up with these toys. Thank you
+ireachy Hey, Yeah that has been mentioned a couple of times. There is not space to add five stripes because of the way the wing is moulded. I could squeeze them in, but I don't think that would look good. So for now, I will leave it with 3. Cheers
would love to see you airbrush the x wing so it looks like the actual movie props, all the engines sprayed, and battle damage all sprayed, that would look very cool, thanks for your videos.
From Kenner Star Wars: The Ultimate Force Collection...the new Luke Skywalker X-Wing Fighter! (Batteries not included; action figures sold seperately.) Complete with battle-sounds and firing missile, and that's not all - now included are Red 5 stickers which you put together to recreate Luke Skywalker's Red 5 X-Wing! Kenner Star Wars: The Ultimate Force X-Wing Fighter. Action figures sold seperately; batteries not included...from Kenner.
Another great job mate, looks great especially the circular engine stickers, much better than anything Kenner did, now all you need to do is mass produce them! As an aside have you ever experimented with using soapy water and wire wool to remove the yellow staining to save lots of time or would that damage the plastic or not even remove the yellowing?
I'm loving your work, but one question. Wouldn't you think you would get a bit better effect if you made water slide decals as opposed to stickers? I'm thinking that the stickers could pull up and curl over time where the Water slide would hold better. Of course unless you seal the decals they could yellow over time. 6 of one and half dozen of another I guess. I'm new to this so I'm guessing painting these toys would be a no no??? Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your videos
You can use the waterslide stuff. I like stickers as it keeps it like the originals. Even when I do customs I try to keep them in the spirit of the vintage styles they would have used. Give the waterslides a go and let me know how it looks. I'd be interested to see. cheers
Nice. Been enjoying your videos! I'm looking at restoring some of my old vehicles (although the eBay prices for replacement parts is off-putting!). Do you think that type of Peroxide would be okay to use on the grey plastics too? (AT-AT, Falcon) I hope so as they're a bit too bulky to be leaving outside in a tank of peroxide for a week. 😊 Cheers :)
Hello from the US. That is "Red 3" look at the number of red stripes on the left or right upper wing. Yours has 3 stripes. Now look again at your pictures of Luke's "Red 5" .... there's 5 red stripes. The number of stripes and color of stripes give the call sign.
+Toy Polloi he's right :) the bars are the callsign markings. it always bothered me that all x wings were red 3. until i realised that that means it's Wedge.
as you know by now about the 5 stripes on the back of the wing (red 5)...there was something that bugged me for a while about the red stripe going right up the side, all my Xwings stripes are broken like you have done with your decals but i was always sure it was a full solid stripe, and in "a new hope" they are one solid red line, then in "Empire" they changed to how you have them now....anyways dunno why but thought i'd just say...really love your vids fella...cheers spike
+Toy Polloi have you seen the 1977 kenner prototype x wing www.ebay.com/itm/Original-STAR-WARS-Kenner-X-Wing-Paint-master-Design-Prototype-Mint-sample-/131805736805?
I recently resorted an X-Wing and after watching this video I decided to use your custom Red 5 decals, I posted some pictures in a group on FB and almost immediately the comments started that this isn't Red 5 at all it is in fact Red 3, the number of red stripes on the wings indicate which ship it is, in this case 3 red stripes = Red 3. But since you based your custom decals on the original decals created back in the day this was never Lukes X-Wing to begin with. Don't get me wrong I think this custom job is fantastic I'm just passing on what has been said to me. I'm going to adjust them slightly to make it Red 5 and also make some Red 2 wing stickers for Wedges ship.
Great restoration, but I have to ask: why not correct the wing markings to indicate that it's actually Luke's X-Wing while you're customizing it? The original stickers only have 3 red stripes, meaning it's Red Three (Biggs' X-Wing). Luke's has 5 red stripes, because he's Red Five. Printing your own stickers, you could totally make it have 5 strips and not just 3.
I see that you have more than one x-wing, would you consider selling one of them? If so please let me know, thank you for all your videos , i love them.
Hi there I'm a few years to late but I found your vids when looking to restore my Falcon, x wing, and atat walker all your vids helped emencely so thank you. Is there any chance you could send me the x wing stickers with the upgraded bits on it they look amazing
@@toypolloi hi thanks for the help but I'm affriad I don't have access to the machine you need to do this could you print a set and I would happily pay thanks
It's not really RED FIVE as you left wing markings as RED THREE, and I wish you'd sell the decals rather than the pdf as I have no access to a printer. Absolutely brilliant what you can do
Yeah, a few people have pointed that out. As for printing, take them to a local print shop, they will be able to print the files I sell for you. Cheers
I can't begin to explain how weird it is to have your name casually mentioned in a Toy Polloi video. I literally spat my tea over the keyboard at the time.
