The AT ST was the first 'big' Star Wars toy I ever got as a kid after previously just getting a few figures, so it probably would've been around Christmas '84. So many happy memories of playing with it back then. Seeing this restoration brings joy to my heart.
Just a quick 'thank you' to Mr. Polloi: I just restored a vintage AT-ST and this video was extremely helpful - particularly the advice regarding the correct positioning of pieces during reassembly. Unfortunately, I couldn't separate the 'head' section (as I really felt the plastic would crack), but it still came out looking terrific after the peroxide bath. Incidentally, I'm quite amazed at how long you submerge your items in the hydrogen peroxide, as in my part of the world (on a sunny summer's day, in direct unfiltered sunlight) the change happens in mere hours. I also use the commercially available 6% HP solution in a covered plastic tub, but I'm guessing the heat of the sun here contributes markedly to the process. I imagine in Merry OId England the sun has to be coaxed from behind the clouds at most times during the year (!), hence the much longer bathing time. Anyway, many thanks for this video and your channel which, along with Retroblasting, is providing some of the very best vintage toy content on the Internet. :)
Perfect breakdown - I bought a spring kit off of ebay after acquiring a walker with a wonky leg twitch - tore it down and put it back together and the leg was still jackknifing while the other wasn't doing anything. After watching this video, I realized the axels must not have been synced with the button mechanism via the that weird H piece. Pulled it back apart and rebuilt it exactly as instructed and sure enough, works like a charm, even stands on its own after heating the legs from one of your previous videos. Thank you! when i was a kid my dad gave me his AT-ST and now that i’m older and enjoy painting i think i want to give it a respray! i painted Jango fetts slave one in boba fetts slave one colors and it looks AWESOME id love to show some pictures sometime!

I'm about to start on the Falcon and have run into the issue of not being able to fit it fully in my peroxide tub used for previous projects. Have you noticed bad streaks or imbalances when 'turning' vehicle parts in the peroxide? I'd prefer to submerge the entire pieces, but maybe dipping them half in at a time will be OK? vivamorrissey1 You just need to carefully click each of the clips out of the way and it will pop off. It takes a bit of practice. But it can be done. Try putting it in boiling water first to soften the plastic so it doesn't snap.
I've heard that one way you can also bleach discoloured plastic rather than submerge it is that you suspend it above the solution inside the tub so it's whitened by the vapours instead and that should theoretically provide a more even way of de-yellowing.
Very carefully. I should probably re do this video. You have to in clip each of the clips holding the head on, you may find a couple break, but it can be done.

I know it's been awhile that this video has been up, but I just got into restoring my old Star Wars toys. I used this video to walk through the disassembly/assembly of the walker. I had a slight problem come up on mine - when I reattached the head/cockpit to the body, the head spins quite freely now and there is no friction like before. I had to pry back on the tabs around the base of the head piece to get it to come loose. I am thinking that those tabs aren't closed up like they used be. Can you think of a way to tighten those back up? I was thinkin of wrapping something around the tabs like a cable tie or even a small piece of wire around it to try and squeeze those tabs together. Your thoughts??
A very helpful restoration review! I now inspired to restore my 1983 GI joe Sky striker too. I f I may ask, if the bleaching process will work on Translucent plastic too, like the 1983 Skystriker glass canopy without any complications?
+System509 you can try to wipe the restored items down with armor all or an unscented black magic tire shine. These products from what I can tell on line a plasticizers.

Hi, Love the vids, loads of great advice. I see lots of items like this at boot fairs but most are badly scratched from rough play or being thrown down the garden path. This puts me of buying them. Any suggestions on how to remove deep scratches and scored areas (Particularly on raised edges and corners) or am I right to just leave them on the stall. Thanks Rob
I’d still buy them if they were good value. Nothing wrong with some playwear on a toy. You can probably improve the scratches with a very fine grit sand paper, wet and dry stuff. Depends where the scratches are. Or just appreciate them for what they are. Wabi sabi toy collecting.

Amazingrestoration, dont hate me but there is one problem, the bottomturret should have 3 gun barrels and it only has 2 becuase one snapped away, over all looks really good.

Makes sure all the screws are tight. And that the legs are straight. You can remove any bends in the leg plastic by warming them in just boiled water. And then straighten them by hand and let the cool.

The legs bend over time. Chances are it is that causing the problem. Take them apart and warm the main leg in just boiled water to reshape and straighten.
So im going to do my 1995 POTF Millennium Falcon with this method, how long does it need to soak in the sun? What percentage Hydrogen Peroxide should I be using also?
I know old video. Any advice on how I can restore the look of my 2004 R2D2 his body is yellowed. It's the one that has a button and beeps and the red light comes on, so it's got electronics inside and submersing any kind of liquid all over it would damage it.

Instead of soaking the items in a bin, you can also soak them in a sealed zip-loc plastic bag. This saves space too!

I've not had that issue before, but a cable tie sounds like a good idea to me. At least worth a try.

No. It can discolour again. Keep old toys out of the sun.

If you have straightened the legs and made sure all the screws and springs are tight, it should stand up straight.
The shifting white balance makes it difficult to tell when the yellowing has gone.

Great shows but could I just add if you use modelling clamps you can reverse them and have more control on spreading than hand plyers
Followed your brilliant tutorial, my atst leans forwards like yours did, and it still leans after stripping/rebuilding. How did you fix its stance?

You can re-use it quite a few times.

Carefully. Use a screwdriver to work around the clips one at a time. You may break a couple, don't worry. Just go slow.

Hi, You just need to wash them. I have done a couple of videos on cleaning figures, and also ultrasonic cleaning. Check those out.
Why it's head is yellow? I have the same problem on gray lego bricks.

Generally they just need all the screws tightening up. And make sure the spring is pushing hard enough.

Place them in just boiled hot water for 30 secs or so. Then re shape and let cool.

I know old video. Any advice on how I can restore the look of my 2004 R2D2 his body is yellowed. It's the one that has a button and beeps and the red light comes on, so it's got electronics inside and submersing any kind of liquid all over it would damage it.
You'll need to take it apart to get all those bits out if you want to submerge it. Cheers
