Hey ya'll... the current exchange rate is £1 = R24 ( I use £1 = R20 for quick calculations ).... In hindsight I see that it probably would have been helpful to include both currencies ( or stick to one currency ) ... but I'll take note of that for future videos.
After spending a few weeks in Sweden and Denmark I said I would never again complain about the cost of living in Cape Town. I came home with a greater sense of gratitude for what we have here.
I visited my family in London for 3 weeks in winter and after 2 weeks of no sun and only being able to afford to eat out at McDonald's with the coupons in the newspaper on the train I was ready to come home to Cape Town
I remember when I moved to SA from Kenya in 2014, and mind you that’s when life was still easy economically, I used to convert a lot. I eventually stopped because the economies are different. However, it is a good metric of gauging a move.
Now tell us what income in London is compared to Cape Town and how much you will have left after expenses. This will put the cost of living in perspective.
trust me, it is still far more expensive to live in London than Capetown. Even with the income factored in. Not to mention the endless bills and charges people pay in London that South Africans don't even think about.
Third year living in London from Cape Town . It’s a lifestyle downgrade overall . But if you reduce expenditure a little in London then you can save a lot in Rands
Hey mate, I did the same move last year March. I also have to agree with you. I guess we all move for different reasons and for me London is a traveling launch pad. On your insurance: why not get comprehensive insurance which will cover your house+cars+gadgets. It typically works out cheaper that insuring seperately
Thanks for video. I've watched several of comparison videos between South Africa and other countries in regards to cost of living, but the most important factor to me, is what realistic salary can you achieve in the 2 countries before doing any comparison. The South African Rand is weak and will probably get worse, but if you can achieve a better salary/cost of living ratio in South Africa, then it makes no sense to relocate. Then again, if your salary/cost of living ratio is better in any other country, you'll be better off relocating. I always look for videos where people concentrate on salary/cost of living ratio instead of just doing conversions, as it will always proof that South Africa is the cheapest option, but if you don't earn enough in SA and can't find a better job/salary in SA, then you're better off relocating.
New subscriber here. Please 3:06 when you put pounds please put the rands conversions next to it so it's easier to watch. Coz i kept leaving the video to go and use my currency convertor to know how much it is that you're paying and it became tiring. Please!
A bit late but, here goes: assuming you’re still in London, get contents insurance that includes personal belongings. This will cover gadgets & luggage that you carry around with you. You may have to specify items that are over a certain value e.g. single item limit can be around £1,500, so camera lenses and other equipment can be replaced. Personal belongings cover also includes up to £500 cash, but this does vary. If you have expensive bikes, it’ll cover that too. Worth looking into restrictions when travelling out of the UK though.
Hi Tino you could save money by combining insurance instead of getting everything separately. I have been abroad for a few years, but before we left the UK we had comprehensive household insurance from John Lewis that included cover for our gadgets home and away, legal cover, bicycle cover (you mentioned being a keen cyclist) etc. etc. We save a fair few quid cutting out all the separate covers and taking the comprehensive route. Not all insurers offer this, but shop around. Good luck!
You’re probably right and I’m always on the lookout to optimise my expenses…. But a small caveat I probably should have included is that £340 is the avg of money spent in stores like M&S, TESCO, ASDA, etc. which is slight more than just groceries and food so the real figure for groceries is a bit lower than that.
This is a brilliant video, thank you! I just wish you had stated your London expenses in Rands in addition to the Pound values. And then the inverse for the SA values.

Don’t they have a monthly all inclusive transport pass? In Madrid they have an Abono that costs €23 (for zone 1) and you can use the Metro, the Bus, and the overland Trains.
Nice video. Car in SA is compulsory. You had a "free" car but you need to include it as a cost - R8000 per month. There's also travel. Compare the cost of travelling from SA somewhere for holiday - you can't even afford once a year, vs from UK you could travel to EU once a month without even thinking about it. Home security in SA but that is also compulsory unless you're in a gated complex, in which case there is Levies to pay - don't think that was included in the comparison
Thank you for the feedback 💪🏾. Yeah a car is necessary in SA for the convenience but I definitely wouldn’t be paying R8000 pm for it. I would go for a cheaper option similar to what I was already driving ( no more than about R150K ) and I would also pay for it cash because car loans are pretty wild in SA. And yesss I forgot to include my levies! I pay about R1400 pm for levies and these cover security and some of the home maintenance too. Good call out. Security is definitely compulsory! I don’t even know how that would look like if I wasn’t in a gated community. And you’re right about travel… I didn’t include it here as I didn’t see it as a “necessary” cost but travel does look very different between the two countries so it also wouldn’t be an apples-to-apples comparison… Due to the high cost of international travel from SA, all of my travel was local and mostly around the western cape… in the UK it’s a good mix of both local and international while not breaking the bank!
Thanx for your videos its really inspiring im a foreign girl living south africa and also trying to break into tech its been challenging but i will not give up hope
Awesome video as always Tino. Have you considered get a single bedroom place or was the 2 bedroom place a good deal? Coz I think that might save you some cash. Further, are you considering continuing your studies (masters, certifications, etc)?
Yep I definitely am! My rent is going up to 1450 and I’m actually on the search for another place now. I’m happy to get a 1-bed but the challenge is that most 1-beds in the city and in this price range don’t have much extra space for a home office space too so I’ve been looking further out in zones 5+… 2-beds in the city are out of the question now given the rent increases so I also don’t mind moving out towards Berkshire, Surrey, Milton Keynes areas. As for further education; I do some certifications to stay updated in my current role but tbh I never considered doing a masters until recently because it just didn’t seem worth it given the roles/careers I’ve been pursuing… but I definitely am looking into doing some certifications and/or masters broaden my skillset beyond my current technical domains (i.e so maybe moving into business, management, etc.)
There is download speed of up to 1GBps now with broadband in certain areas of the UK. It is expensive though, not needed for one person, but a family or house of multiple occupancy.

Unfortunately my area doesn’t have fibre yet and i have the highest speeds available 😭. I’m so jealous of y’all with gigabit internet and I’m here with what feels like a dial up connection 😂. I’m definitely making sure I get a place with full fibre when I move from here though! Good to know there’s light at the end of the fibre tunnel. 💪🏾
Thank for this informative video Tino! Dope content as always. In your opinion, what is a good salary then in Tech in the UK and do you think that one could be able to save in pounds and purchase stuff like property in SA? From some that I have heard from it's been said that there usually isn't enough at the end of the month in UK😅
Haha as for a “good” salary, it really depends on a lot of factors like your lifestyle, work experience, where you work/live, etc. £100K is a very good salary to some and also a really low salary for others. I think you can totally save enough to purchase property in SA because you have a higher purchasing power with the GBP… I still pay a mortgage equivalent to about £500 for a 3-bedroom apartment in Cape Town. That’s about a third of my rent in London… and I’m slowly saving towards purchasing something here (but that’s gonna take quite a while because property here is pretty expensive) But if money is what you are really after, you wanna look at countries like the US and Middle East. You can make really good monies there.
This is some good insight. I'm just on the outskirts of London. We're from Zambia. I'm interested to know more about the mortgage you got in Cape Town. Could we please connect? 🙏🏽
Hi. Great video, thanks for sharing this priceless info! Just for better perspective however, if you compare the cost of living in London vs Cape Town to earnings in London vs. Cape Town.....then what is the more affordable option? It is one thing comparing costs directly, however it has to be compared to the income and/or income potential as a percentage perhaps.
Great suggestion! and that is definitely going to be a follow up video from this one! Thanks for the suggestion. For this video, I wanted to focus purely on the cost of living and not affordability (otherwise the video would be so much longer). The target audience is people who want a better understanding and realistic figures when trying to determine their basic costs of living in London (... so that they can determine on their own whether they can afford it or not based on what their salaries will be ). In my own case, my salary increased by quite a bit, but the costs/income ratio actually got worse although that doesn't take into account the purchasing power of the GBP and other factors like lifestyle.
Love this content! Mna, Im trying to head back home from London (a mixture of reasons) 😂 Any tips or watchouts? And will I really be financially better off? (I suspect so, but just want to be aware of any potential hidden costs) 🤔
Lived in London for 2 years and it was hell expensive. I spend in rands over 2 years on the transport system (bus & trains/underground) the equivalent of R160 000. Rent for a tiny room was expensive in an apartment. Food in UK if you don't buy at a decent place is expensive, this is why the obese amongst the poor is rife due to constant fast food. The weather sucks 80% of the time, noise levels are stupid loud, constant barrage of police and emergency vehicles not to mention the traffic. The only good thing was cell coverage/data and the internet that was cheap!
It's R23.42 to £1. Another thing you need to factor in is health insurance as in UK this is free at point of service. Also you're in London where transportation is ok. I have a car and Lordie is it expensive to own a car in the UK!!!
Good video. A few comments, though. You need to add on about R6k pm for a car, most people don't have a car that's paid off. Also security, that is a necessary cost in SA. London is by far the most expensive city in England, I live in Liverpool in the North West, great city by the way, and rentals or house prices are waaaay cheaper. All things considered, I can save between R20000 and R25000 pm living here, while in SA I was lucky to save R5000 pm. All the best mate 😉
Hi Tino, very insightful video. I'm moving to the Isle of Man at the end of September on a work visa. Would you say London is cheaper or more expensive? I'm not sure if you have insight into Isle of Man, but thought I'd check.
That's awesome man all the best.... Rent and maybe transport too is definitely cheaper in Isle of Man, however, everything else will be about the same or more expensive in Isle of Man probably due to it being an island and all.
Hi tino, can a zimbo buy property in SA for investment purposes or as a holiday house when you don’t have citizenship or lived there? . I love how beautiful it is interesting in purchasing a holiday house but am a bit apprehensive because of the violence that happens sometimes and am scared they would repossess at some point because I am zimbo 😅😅
Yeah anyone can own property in South Africa including foreigners. You don’t even need to set foot in the country to do so too…only limiting factor is your pocket. You will struggle to get loans from a South African bank if you are not a permanent resident but if you have the money (or can borrow it elsewhere) you can purchase property.
@@trying2adult thank you 🙏 funny enough I was looking at capetown because of the surrounding beaches and also because I can rent it out when I am not using it. Also if you are comfortable could you please do a video on investing as a young adult especially when you are no longer based in zim. I have downloaded that Emma app it’s quite useful thanks 🙏
Awesome suggestion! It’s something I have had a lot of struggle trying to wrap my head around but I’m happy to share what I’ve learnt! Investing works very differently when you are in a society with a functional economy.
Hi Tino. Congrats on a successful move. I'm a year in CT on a critical skills visa. What are some of the cool hang out places where I can make decent friends from Zim and international ie an expat community? Thanks.
That’s such a good question. If you wanna meet Zimbos, go to ZIM churches 😅. Look out for events and music shows by ZIM artists. They don’t happen often though but worth looking into. Places were black people hang out like Rands also feature some Zimbos. There are quite a number of music bars around Cape Town like Selective Live and those can be good spots to meet people… markets like Old Biscuit Mill, Mojo and Oranjezicht are nice social places too and always be on the look out for live shows like Kirstenbosch Summer concerts, Silo Concerts, outdoor movie theatre, music festivals, etc.
Lol. I actually go to a Capetonian church where I haven't met any Zimbas but I'm not complaining. I don't like drama and petty rivalries 😂. Thanks for the pointers, I'll explore those options.
😂😂😂 I agree. Maybe try out vana ZAIOGA 👀👀👀… but check out black friendly church’s like Hillsong, Every Nation, Gospel Rama, etc. I always bump into Zimbos there

Question I have for you Tino, did you major in IS or comp sci? And what advice or tips do you have for anyone looking to work for Amazon internationally without going via SA first? On another tangent, I'm curious to know have you had any experiences if racism there so far, and how does it pale compared to CT?
I studied Electrical and Computer engineering so I have a strong Comp.Sci background from the Comp.Eng side of my degree.... If you are trying to go international, good and relevant work experience (with a good portfolio of work) is what you really need. Companies that hire internationally do so because they can't find the talent they are looking for locally... so you essentially need to stand out and be more attractive than the average applicant... a degree and formal qualifications alone aren't enough because everyone already over-indexes on these. Imagine two candidates applying for a cloud engineering role... one has a comp.sci degree with some certifications but no work experience and the other also has a comp.sci degree but has also built an online booking and order management system for their friend's small business as a side hustle... who would you consider hiring? As for racism... not much to be honest. That hasn't crossed my path just yet... however, they tend to be more vocal on social media platforms but meh...
Lifestyle is how people should choose where they live in the world. Yes USA has no paid maternity leave (generally) but if you do not intend to have children, that should not be on your cons list. Similarly, if weather does not affect your mood (some of us get whacked by seasonal depression) or you're not an outdoorsy, then the weather probably should not be on the top of your UK (or Ireland) con list.

I heard you mention travel insurance and monthly premiums. I suppose your insurer is not a South African based insurance company . There is no travel insurance that exceeds six months on offer in South Africa. When one has a relative working abroad or on a cruise ship they are not insured after six months of their contract has lapsed which to me is very risky. The cost of hospitalization or dying abriad is astronomical and cannot be afforded by ordinary people anywhere in the world let alone by South Africans.

I’m definitely making sure I get a place with full fibre when I move from here though! Good to know there’s light at the end of the fibre tunnel. 💪🏾
I also get Full Fibre with EE @ 26 per month.
Bro you're expensive your expenditure is massive it makes me a cheapskate 😂 I'm also in London
Thank you for such an interesting video. We needed this information
That’s about a third of my rent in London… and I’m slowly saving towards purchasing something here (but that’s gonna take quite a while because property here is pretty expensive)
But if money is what you are really after, you wanna look at countries like the US and Middle East. You can make really good monies there.
Thank you for this very informative video Tino👏 All the best....
Thank you Nyari!
Now this is what we call useful content! 👏🏽👏🏽🙌🏽 Subscribed on the spot 😂❤
💯 agree with you. I also subscribed immediately. This is useful especially if you looking to relocate
This is some good insight. I'm just on the outskirts of London. We're from Zambia. I'm interested to know more about the mortgage you got in Cape Town. Could we please connect? 🙏🏽
Awesome! Where do you live in London?

@@trying2adult Thanks so much for the feedback, it helps put things into perspective.
I don't know when you last lived in Cape Town? You can raise those amounts significantly for food, electric and petrol
This is very useful information for a foreigner. Thank you
Hi can u do a video explaining home loan insurance and stuff
I like your down to earth energy.
What are your levies like in your blouberg apartment?
Forgot to include those! I’m currently paying about R1,500 per month in levies
You are absolutely amazing man.Looking forward to your next video
Thank you Trevor!
I need to catch up on your content, you moved to the UK??? This is amazing!!!!! 🎉🎉
It's R23.42 to £1.
Another thing you need to factor in is health insurance as in UK this is free at point of service.
Also you're in London where transportation is ok. I have a car and Lordie is it expensive to own a car in the UK!!!
Expensive to own sure but used cars are some of the cheapest in the world
I love Blouberg, every-time I visit Cape Town I stay in Blouberg.
I stay at West Beach Bloubergstrand 🥰
Please make a video on your journey to getting a critical skills visa
Awesome exercise, my first double KB exercise 💪🏽
My problem is that I keep converting everything you are saying in Pounds to Rands
You are doing well friend. 🙌🏾 keep at it. @09:50 😂 😂
😂 thank you! I’m trying out here!
@@trying2adultmakes sense. Thanks fam
Most things on the island are more expensive than most parts of the UK, but similar to London itself.
@MrMartinHattingh thank you 🙏🏾
Bro you motivate me so much!!! i'm studing what you studied. much love mann
Awesome work dude!!! All the best with the engineerings man you’ll love it!
i think we pay R900 for 100mbps up and down in durban...
That's a pretty solid deal. Who is your provider?
I miss reliable and stable South African fibre.
Thank you for this detailed insight, so helpful.
Great video Tino, you should visit Sussex when you get a chance, great views this side.
keep them coming, make a travel vlog video please, trains and busses.
That’s coming up next!!
you're back yay!
What it do baby!!! 🕺🏿
You should make a video on 22seven. How do the tracking apps benefit you?
Loove this video. Currently living in CT and thinking of moving.
Which areas did you wanna purchase a holiday home? I would totally love a holiday home by the ocean in the western cape region!
Sending love from Cape Town. Great channel.
Thank you 🙏🏿
I always bump into Zimbos there
Hey Belinda where in Cape Town are you? I am in Parklands
@@precioussanyika5656 Hey. Muizenberg.

Hey! What r your top 5 fav restaurants in Cape Town SA?
😭 then how come I don't feel rich? Please explain [10]
@@trying2adult much appreciated! Thanks Tino! 🙏
bro needs to help a brother out. did you transfer from Amazon Cape Town, or directly applied for London ?
Hey bro. I transferred internally within AWS by applying for a role in London.
Good one bro, hope my people are coping over there
I wish one day smart black brothers like u gets together and fix the beautiful Zimbabwe. Make Zim a better place to live again. I pray for Zimbabwe Al da tym. SBU DOWN IN DURBAN
I don’t think ZIM is short on “smart” people hey. It will take a lot more than “smart” people to bring prosperity to our country 🥲.
@@trying2adult l think you missing the flow here brother, the issue here ls all our brothers and sisters of the African continent need to stay in their respective country n fix it. Wateva it takes get it done . I am a subscriber by the way. All da best
Ahh I get you. You are right man I can't argue with you there. I do dream of moving back home at a later stage in life when I got all my eggs sorted out. I dont think i can picture myself spending the rest of my life here
You just gained a subscriber looking forward to learn more from you
Are you originally from Zim? I am picking up a Zim accent.
Yes he's from Zimbabwe
The figures for electricity, mortage a insurance in cape town extremely higher than this video states. What year are you comparing this?
Mortgage details are current… but the rest were from around August Last year before I moved this side.
I Pay Rain R549p/m for 60mb/sec for Up and 40 down on 5g, which is quite affordable and it has only went down 2 days in the past 7 months average
I live in Manchester and the costs are basically the same at the moment
Wild! Well there goes my dream of running away from London to Manchester to avoid the high cost of living 😢
Relocated from CA USA TO SOUTH AFRICA love my move
Hi, what is the name of your gadget insurance in London?
It's through my employer... not sure who they partner with but it's a benefit I signed up for to cover my gadgets.
What are these numbers in USD?
It would be nice if you'd convert financial figures between the two currencies..I.e £s=To Rands and and Rands to £s
Nice video. I will be waiting patiently for your next upload (next week Sunday, no pressure 👀)...But I don't know how you think we are supposed to survive adulting without your extensive research and guidance. 😅
😂😂 I’m trying my best here. No pressure at all
You moved,,, wow congrats Tino🎉
Yes Nelly! Thank you!
That camera/drone insurance 😂😂
I heard you mention travel insurance and monthly premiums. I suppose your insurer is not a South African based insurance company . There is no travel insurance that exceeds six months on offer in South Africa. When one has a relative working abroad or on a cruise ship they are not insured after six months of their contract has lapsed which to me is very risky. The cost of hospitalization or dying abriad is astronomical and cannot be afforded by ordinary people anywhere in the world let alone by South Africans.
Tino, the famous guy in CPT11 😂, You know very well that I draw inspiration from you.
😂 I hope I’m famous for good things only
Yes, of course. Linux made your name😂
