    Awesome build! Just picked up the same exact model fully stock, original tires and everything with minimal wear on it (some tiny scratches on fork and frame) for 130! I'm super excited and happy for it since I've been wanting to get a cool MTB to turn into a commuter gravel build.

      @JetAgeOfLotus 22 дня назад +1

      @ this video was the main reason why I bought it! Might do the drops might not. I’m leaning more towards these type of bars after rewatching. Definitely gonna do more beefy tires, silver bars, and convert it to a 1x. The 3x7 gearing makes me confused lol.

    A friend of mine had this exact model and color when I was in college in the late 90's - early 00's. It got stolen within a week, and he built a klunker which he rode and never locked up for the rest of his college career. I was seriously in love with his Hard Rock, even though I was riding a black and purple Rockhopper at the time, and I almost felt as heartbroken as he did when his got stolen. My extra precaution kept mine from getting stolen for another year (Arizona State bike thieves are relentless) and I rode a light pink and blue Takara road bike (which would be a highly-sought prize in today's vintage market. Thank god my Dad still owns it so I can visit it from time to time) for the rest of my college career, and the thieves never thought it worth their time. Anyway, sorry for the long comment, but this very bike brings back some strong bike-related memories.

    Btw Gary! I was looking for alternatives for avoporust, cuz it's not available in my country. So I found a thread where a guy suggested it is Edetate disodium (C10H14N2Na2O8). I tried it and I've been using it all the time. It is supercheap, safe for use as it is not toxic doesnt smell and easily available (ordering online). The regulation may vary from area to area though.
    You need to warm a water to 60C add this powder and a soap and mix it.
    Just drop the rust parts for 24 hours and the rust will be eaten away like a magic.
    You can use it multiple times. But capacity of the mix is limited. It works like one molecule of Edetate disodium is connecting with one molecule of rust and go away together as one

    As an owner of 84' Koga Miyata rat bike I often watch these restoration videos, but let's be honest, the biggest benefit of owning a rat bike is because it looks like a trash, and with friction shifters most thieves probably won't be able to drive it away even if you leave it unchained.
    Keep it simple and low cost. Spend your money and effort on your dream bike you keep at home, safe from elements and criminals. ;)

    I had a bike for several years that had grip shifters. They were.... fine. They weren't anything special, but they worked fine. I never really understood why they get so much hate. Are they, like "dork disks" just viewed as uncool?

    • @garysprojects

      I think just general preference, I personally don’t like them because they can shift when riding etc , if they work for u keep em 👍

    I like gripshift but those are awful and not OEM specialized had their own branded units that are awesome.
    Rm40 is Alivio for sure. I have the darker wheel version of those on a purple GT Timberline
    Betting that came with the MC-12 cranks. The recall alivio cranks.. also on my GT..
    Which would be confirmed with the front hub being a MC-12..
    Usually that would have been a 21 speed with -12 so perhaps it was -16

      @garysprojects they are much easier to swap cables and clean. I have a 94 Rockhopper on my IG post.
      The rear Mech look like mc-16 so the cranks would be the same.. so that's an upgrade rear wheel and shifters
