"After playing to film festival crowds worldwide through 2018 and 2019, Sarah Van Den Boom’s hugely impressive stop-motion short Raymonde ou l’évasion verticale (Raymonde or the Vertical Escape) arrived online earlier in 2020, for internet audiences to share in its wonder. A technically impressive piece filled with relatable anthropomorphised animal characters, brought to life via detailed puppets, this is a story that shows it is never too late to change your life and live differently.
Opening with peaceful tracking shots of landscapes silhouetted by the freshly risen sun, Raymonde or the Vertical Escape’s calming beginning is soon punctured by the cries of a fleeing postman (or in this case postdog) as he runs from the titular Raymonde’s home. The reasons for his escape only becomes clear later, as we learn more about the 60yr-old Owl-woman at the centre Van Den Boom’s short, and her lonely existence.
Describing her film as one about “desire in the broad sense”, Van Den Boom explains (in the film’s press kit) that her character is searching for “a form of transcendence that would make her see the world from above and taste a kind of passion to which all her soul aspires”. Essentially a tale of self-discovery, Raymonde is looking back at her life and wondering if she made the right choices - as her impulses are telling her something quite different.
Over the film’s 17-minute duration, Van Den Boom immerses you in Raymonde’s world - both the physical one in which she exists and the confused headspace where her thoughts dwell. It’s a sombre, melancholy viewing experience, tinged with humour, but like many solemn storylines it ends with a positive note. As a French speaker. You were mostly right. She was praying for a man. But since she was so desperate after fails. She wanted to be “normal” like everyone but she’s a nocturnal animal. The last night she climbed at the top of the tree following the other bird’s call. She finally took a leap of faith.
Some say she fell and died…. Some say she flew to her heart….
The crow in the end is also an undomesticated animal. So just like the owl, she will have the same destiny. Moral of the story is
Follow your heart and instincts even if death is the result.

For those who don't speak french. The movie is basically about this old lady battling between sexual frustration (she is a virgin) and her religion. She turns towards nature as she finds it is easier than the society of men

Very intriguing animated story!!! This speaks to a lot of older women that may not get out like they once did, especially in these days. Encouraging them to go get out spread your wings. And the ones that may have lost a mate. You can still perhaps find LOVE if you go out and explore. You don't even have to speak the language to be touched by the story. Thanks ZO!!!!

thoughts- A core message I perceived, also as a non-French speaker, one’s desires will lead to a decision that consequently can become utterly detrimental (ex. the owl jumping into the ground bit..) BUT. through each individual journey of natural struggle of coping with one’s own life, emotions, etc. It looks very different at times (ex- The crow.. I think you’re onto something about the two birds calling each other). Anywho, we all reach & call out for help in various ways- but one cannot force healing. One cannot force TIME. One cannot force their way to reach an expected outcome. (ex. Owl pushing up on the dog 😭) … Language goes beyond the words and this short w/o english subtitles is a great example of being an attentive, engaged observer. Loved it 🙌🏽
& the presence of the “ghost-like” or spirited women, frolicking around in her reality was a nice, nice touch. Perspective is paramount to reality of a being. Not only perspective by a brain’s/mind’s insight, but the being’s senses as a whole. (which leans into the natural desires narrative)

I agree with you for the most part about the message being who she truly was. However I think she was trying to be something she isn’t in the sense that she was homosexual but pursuing the male dog yet having the lesbian fantasies. She is also very nervous and uncomfortable around him. Another example is when she was shooing away the hallucinations just before the postman arrived, and at the very end with the crow that appears to be just like the owl, and she hears the call of the owl lady while seeing the hallucinations of the woman in red and black. I also think the hallucinations represented the owl and crow by colors. Notice the lady in red is always naked and skinny dipping just like the owl lady and the lady in black is more of a mystery yet it is clear they are both fond of each other. I loved it❤ thanks for the upload xoxo 💋

She is an Owl trying to live as a day animal .
She didn’t fit as a Day animal but didn’t know that that.
That’s why it was more comfortable for her to come out at night being her true self.
She flew accidentally falling out tree, which she didn’t know she could do, finding her true place, and made contact with a Crow through her true calling as an Owl, contacting the Crow.
The Crow… is part 2…his story

I agree with you on the subject of it all. I think she was lonely and like the other animals that can be domesticated she wanted to be herself. She’s an owl & of course the crow at the end hears the cries of freedom, crows aren’t domesticated either. So she eventually fled to her true nature of life as should the crow. The duck or chicken, goose, dog & whoever else won’t feel the way. I enjoyed this.

What I got from the story was we are all kind of in this mind entrapment on wanting to be the best we can be in other peoples eyes or what other people think but in reality we really want something different and we feel like we are alone when it comes to that but like the story showed There’s people just like us not we are used to or expect sometimes you have to lift off and fly and go explore different people and different things so you can see you are not alone. There’s people just like you and there’s people and friends that will enjoy the same things you do. You just have to take the leap of faith and take off and fly!
And then the part where the bird was flying, but was paused in mid air. I feel like that represents people who took the initiative to go find themselves, but still find themselves stuck. Stuck between what they used to believe/be and what they want to believe/be.

This is some of the craziest mess I've seen. I had to go to the comments to understand For Real.. the people in the cop really threw me off
