The quiet/loud/quiet structure of many Nirvana songs, including this one, is very much inspired by the Pixies, who were known for their often mellow verses and explosive choruses.
Early 90's Nirvana was really 1989-1994 when they were the most popular act on the planet until they suddenly ended with Kurt committing suicide. And the lyric is ""I'm not gonna crack". By the way "Lithium" is a drug used to treat Bipolar people. The lyrics are written from the perspective of someone experiencing extreme highs and lows.
I did not know that the song was named after the drug lithium Which I have taken in the past for bipolar.
Back when this song was big I knew a friend who used to put crushed lithium in her joints.
Just wonted to wrote thet...execly
As demonstrated musically. Nevertheless, brilliant stuff and got me through uni along with metallica

Don’t worry, there are still plenty of young nirvana fans. Some gen z still rocks out to classic rock (60s,70s, 80s) or 90s rock as well.
The period of time from August- November 1991 was a life changing, time defining era for music. Metallica and Guns n Roses released stadium conquering supernova albums that lead hard rock and metal to the highest skylines of popularity. U2 reinvent themselves and stadium shows with "Actung Baby" and its tour. But whist those bands were already big, in the middle of all that, out of nowhere came THIS. September 1991 was when the whole music industry shifted via this band and the grunge movement. Radio, Mtv, pop culture in general changed and the 90s Really got started. Whatever music you liked- be it rock or hip hop, the early 90s were an amazing time to be a youngster!
I was 12 in '91-92 and the impact Nirvana had on me has not been surpassed. That, and the movie "Terminator 2' ,also from '91, are some of the biggest influences on my life.
“Whoever he is”. ? I died a little inside.

Kinda sad how caught up kids my age are in only trap music. Kurt Cobain is a household name (I guess now was). Man made, soul made music is gonna die due to kids my age and our kids after.
@@richardjanssen3538 I’m 39 years old and I’m a Millennial. I’m on the upper end of the cutoff. “It’s gonna be one of them calm songs” famous last words.
Grunge is the "style" of their music. The Seattle sound in the 90s. You'll also NEED to listen to Soundgarden.
And Alice In Chains
@@candie1230 absolutely!
Alice In Chains 100 per cent.
Definitely Alice in Chains but I'll also add Pearl Jam.
Pretty much any band on the Singles soundtrack. Those were my college days.
Nirvana was the 90's they made Grunge music. The singer & writer of the vast majority of their songs was the lead singer Kurt Cobain. His story is tragic, he suffered from severe bouts of depression & when you finally think he has it all; a successful band, wife, child, wealth... His depression often led to drug abuse. He stated many times all he wanted was to make music he wasn't expecting the insanity that comes with it. He was the voice of Generation X & Alternative music as a whole came about because of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. Sadly, he joined Club 27 and committed suicide. Their Nevermind album was a total game changer.
They were their own category. This is the start of Grunge, and they redefined music. They weren’t anything and were not defined. A weird mix of alternative, punk and rock. Good stuff. 😊 one of my favorites.
Fun fact for you JoJo: The drummer in Nirvana is Dave Grohl who (if you didn’t already know) would eventually go on to front the Foo Fighters. If you’ve never heard of them or aren’t familiar, check out The Pretender. Beast of a song!
Even funnier fact: the first Foo Fighter album is filled with songs Dave Grohl wrote during his time in Nirvana.

Most of us who were teens in the early '90s probably remember the first time we heard Nirvana...just because they didn't fit into any genre that was well known, although the label "grunge" stuck.
I really enjoy watching the joy and shock and awe on your face when you're hearing these songs for the first time. In a way I envy you because I've heard these songs many times to this day but there's nothing quite like the first time you get blown away. I'm one of the biggest Nirvana fans ever. Kurt Cobain the lead singer was a cool guy indeed. It's crazy how so many years have passed and he's still reaching people with his music. The reason why a lot of Nirvana songs are so catchy is because Kurt had this intention to write songs like nursery rhymes. That's why a lot of Nirvana songs just stick with people.
You should listen to the song “Come as you are” next besides smells like teen spirit it’s their most famous song.
Heart Shaped Box and The Man Who Sold The World are worth checking JoJo.
The Man Who Sold the World is a good cover that Nirvana did tonally. Musically it's almost no different from David Bowie's original. In other words the music and tone is almost the same but the production quality is crisper because technology improved greatly between the two recordings.

The quiet-LOUD-quiet pattern is a little songwriting tip these guys picked up from the Pixies. You should react to some of their songs too. "Grunge" from before there was grunge. Try some Sonic Youth, Jesus Lizard, and Wipers too, for more origins of the noise rock/grunge sounds.

Might I recommend 'In Bloom' for a great Nirvana song follow up? This came out in the 90's and yes Kurt Cobain considered himself as punk rock but everyone attributes him as the father of grunge.
Since you like the fast and hard then soft pattern, you should try “Cemetery Gates” by Pantera. Other than that you should definitely check out other Grunge acts.
Definitely The Pixies too. Nirvana practically stole that from them (lovingly I imagine).

Nirvana is known as the band who started the "grunge moviment". The Seattle sound
Kicked the anti-establishment, anti-materialism of the grunge movement right into the laps of the hair-bands fans. It was all about doing what feels right to you, authentic and real, to the demise of the glitz and glam of the 80s. The uniform of the grunge wave was found in thrift shops and Nirvana gave us the anthems. Good times, emotional times. Soviet Union fell, Cold War ended, young people rebelled against being told how to look, how to feel, who to love, what to hate. Nirvana captured that by playing their truths and things changed forever because of what they shared with the world, all while sounding like they were still a garage band dreaming of changing the world with their music.
Jojo - count the band members- 3 guys are making all that sound. The band got a little bigger near the end with Pat Smear as a second guitarist .But at this stage it was Kurt (vocals and guitar) , Krist (Bass) and Dave (Drums). The simplicity of the music changed the popular genre away from what bands like GnR were doing at the time ..... literally the world changed when teen spirit was realized .
The 90s (& the grunge movement) rivalled the 70s as a music decade. They changed the genre, completely twisted it on its head.
One of my all time most favourite songs, one of the underrated Kurt masterpieces. It's so heartbreaking yet so romantic. The pain of losing someone close to you and trying to cope with it and move on, the struggle is spot on.
