  • The Ojito Wilderness was created in 2005, and encompasses almost 12,000 acres of rugged desert, box canyons, and lofty mesas in central/northern New Mexico. This area isn't well known, yet it hosts an impressive amount of archeological history. From dinosaur bones to fossilized forests, to seldom-visited ruins and pictographs of the Ancient Puebloan, this wilderness area truly defines its name as a “primitive area”.
We had a great day hiking both of the established trails in the park. Sometimes we find true gems of wild spaces, like the Ojito Wilderness. This place has left us with more questions than answers, and it’s at the top of our list to come back for some off-trail backpacking.
