I remember vividly the first time ever i saw her face, i literaly felt the earth move under my feet, 29 years later cancer took her from me, this song makes me realize how deeply i loved her.
One of the most beautiful love songs ever- sung by one of the most natural female singers of our time. Truly Blessed rendition of an everlasting Classic.
I am a 68 year old man now but this song still brings tears to my eyes. It was the early 70s and I was in college. I was sitting in a bar and this song came on the juke box. Just then, the door opened and "he" walked in. I knew at that moment that he and I would be together. He didn't turn out to be the "one." After a few months he broke it off with me. That was the first time I felt that aching feeling from a love that is not returned. This song brings me right back to 1971 and the heartbreak I was about to experience.
I was around 8 years old. My mom cried so much, playing this song on a .45 record repeatedly, many nights... I can feel the weight & emotions of this classic song (not as a love song) and my mom is there. I love my mom....thank you near 50 years later. ..I remember. And yes this woman can sing...
I'm sure that some of today's singers have the talent but because they stick to safe formulaic songs and autotune we'll never hear them producing something like this that will stand out years from now.
Roberta truly owns this timeless song,I,m 32 years old and love this song with all my heart!!!! And to the man I love this is for you my love. this is for you Marc.
MARIA EUGENIA Villegas - I love George Michael R.I.P. Still can't believe he's gone. But I must be honest with you....no one comes CLOSE to the original version of this song with Roberta singing. George is great. He did the impossible and covered a Beatles song and did the song justice. Listen to Long and Winding road. But, Roberta Flack OWNS this song! I've yet to hear a better version than Roberta's original version.
I have heard this song many many times, but never realized its significance. I lost my wife Wanda to cancer 1 May 2018, and this song touched a memory of the first time I ever saw her face way back on 5 Mar. 1960. I fell in love with her then and I still love her today.
A senior in high school sang this at some evening school event. I was a sophomore. She was fantastic and I have loved this song ever since. Top 10 for GOAT!
Man she is SO BEAUTIFUL. And SINGS LIKE An Angel...If only the world could listen, really listen, and stop all the hatred for one another. What a wonderful world it would be. Thank you very much for posting this wonderful song..
One of the best songs ever....And I love the 'old sound'. This song never fails to bring me to ....joy, sadness, happiness, sorrow....Man, great outpour of a Soul right there.... Old school awesomeness :D
That's a natural singer. The melody, the sound flows out of her body. So beautiful. i bet there was possibly never a better singer than this woman. I imagine how nice it would be for me to sit near her, hear her singing anything
The song was written in 1957 by Ewan McColl (the late Kirsty McColl's father) for Peggy Seeger, whom he later married. This is though, without a shadow of a doubt, the best version of it I've ever heard. Roberta herself has said that this particular song moved her more than just about anything else she ever recorded and I think that shows in her performance of it.
Saw her in Portland Oregon 11/1973 with one of the great loves of my life. Here almost 40 years later the trip and stay to see this performance will be forever etched into my memory. It is said that you can never go back........ if only for a moment.
Thank you for posting this beautiful song, i can honestly say that Roberta Flack is beautiful, and i could listen to her wonderful voice all night long. That song takes me back to when this world was a better place to live, where love ment something, something pure and good, now when i look around me all i see is hate in the world.. Thank you for the beautiful song once again..
I remember travelling on a coach from a football match in Manchester, there was a lot of noise, and laughter then the number one record came on and it was this song, and there was silence as everyone just sat and listened. It takes something special to achieve that across all age groups and personal tastes in music. A great example of how to take somebody else's song and own it. it will never be bettered.
It's a gift that everyone can resonate with in one way or another. For me its what I've not experienced, my past, how life may have turned differently. Since somehow hearing it again hours ago, I'm still replaying it.
Roberta Flack's does not only sing, but virtually lives and breathes this wonderful song, which is why it immediately touches the heart: "The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face".
The Face: "All things are beautiful but only a few see it." (Confucius) The gift of seeing the beauty, the wonder, the value, the dignity of someone. This is truth, this is love!
What a song and a talented singer. I will never forget the first time I heard it, it was in a brilliant Clint Eastwood movie "Play Misty For Me" in 1972 when I was a young 23 and not an old 65. This was an era when music was great. This movie still lives with me to this day as Jessica Walter played a psychopath killer, she was superb in the role.
U just reminded me about the first time ever I heard this song was when I saw "Play Misty for Me" in high school. Wow! Totally forgot about it until I read ur comment. I was 15. 40 years later, after being divorced for 30 years, I married a psychopath in 2010 who hired a hitman to kill me for leaving him and filing assault charges. Lucky for me, the hitman went the police, but he was never charged Bec police blew the investigation. After three protection orders which he broke, I finally got a divorce and a five year "no contact" order, which expired 2.2.20. I got a new life , became a victim rights activist, got elected locally and fought government corruption. He came after me six weeks after he got off the 5 year prabation at the height of COVID. I got a temp protection order which he dragged out for 5 months by ducking service. Sheriff's tried 23 times until they got him. He was a no show which meant I should have easily gotten a final order, but the judge denied my final protective order two days ago because a "reasonable" person would not be in fear for their life after just one threatening phone call. Now, I'm in the cross-hairs again. Life is stranger than fiction. Ur comment triggered a long lost memory fr high school so thanks. Will have to go back and watch Play Misty again (lol).
Greatest Love song ever! 1st heard it in 1972 when I fell in love and married "mmy angel" the next year, 40 years ago today! Still consumes my whole heart! Shalom and thanks Roberta!
Imagine looking into your loved one's eyes, and having that feeling of something beyond the beginnings of love, beyond the turmoil that would end up in pure love. If you could hold that gaze, then that kiss...that is something to remember..for an eternity.
Everybody has the first beautiful love in your life. Burn it again when you hear Roberta sings. Many copies, but Roberta is the best to make your heart burn again with her face, her piano.
No lip-sinking here. Auto-tuning wasn't even heard of in '72. Roberta made a true classic here. My first love, left me. My only true love,I still love her, wherever she is now,and forever.
It's just the most beautiful song. Makes me cry every time. I have only one child. That song always reminds me of when he was born. I still think of him that way. I just adore the words.
I think that's the whole point of this song, you can relate to it being a child, a lover or your brother or sister. It works on so many levels, brilliant lyric by the late Ewan McColl (who wrote it in 1957 for Peggy Seeger, whom he later married).
My husband of 32 yrs died on 3-4-22, I hadn't thought of this song in years and now everytime I start the car in the mornings it seems to come on the radio, then I cry myself to work.
Absolutly my favorite song..and I am a rock/blues musician and I love so many different songs...pinned down I would say Roberta Flack..The "First Time I Saw Your Face"..and the best written too!..Jeff
One of my favorite songs of all time, my wife requested this for our first dance on our wedding day, I don't think I've ever loved anybody more than I did her, on that day at that moment when we danced together alone on the dance floor to this song:-)))))))))))))
The first time I heard this I pulled my VW bug over & cranked that little radio up as loud as it would go. I'm 64 now & still get chills of delight every time I hear it.
Pure beauty, so rare in a popular song, matched with such excellent pitch, tone, attack, phrasing, control, all the components we just blend in our ears, hearts, minds, to feel the quality of great art. Roberta sings a timeless song of dreams, hopeless fantasy, extreme ideals, the very drives of the body and soul in all of us.
I love this song and Roberta Flack singing it. When I was a mere 10 years old when the song was released. I would listen to this song over and over to write down the words so I can sing it along with her on my tape deck :) Beautiful. great memory.
I think this is the single prettiest love song ever written or sung, I've loved it ever since its release and occasionally may even shed a tear or two...sometimes I get that way.
Truly one of the great love songs ever and performed beautifully by Roberta with such clarity and passion. Other renditions come across very lame next to her classic presentation!

Nobody will ever do it better than Roberta Flack !!
Roberta, if you only knew the gift you gave. For 30 years this has been the most beautiful song, I have ever heard.
The song is timeless. Its been recorded by others...but Roberta's is a classic....no other version of this song comes close.
One of the most beautiful songs ever.
💕
Yes it's very beautiful 😍
Nah Foo Fighters are better

This song is a get your head in the rightest of position. Perfect love ya know? Can you dig it?
This is a once in a lifetime love song.
It amazes me how much talent there has been in my lifetime. However today’s singers have missed the boat.
I'm sure that some of today's singers have the talent but because they stick to safe formulaic songs and autotune we'll never hear them producing something like this that will stand out years from now.
Robert Sparkes - you’re absolutely right

The singer and the song. It manages to be personal to everybody, no matter how big the audience..
I bought two of her albums on spec for my first quality hifi in 1972/73, and I still play them in 2022. Solid gold.
Many people have covered this song but nobody can do it like Roberta Flack.
Also George Michael
Also will off the inbetweeners

Julienne Taylor - First time ever i saw your face
How can a song be so romantic and so sad at the same time? Roberta Flack takes music to that next level.
perhaps the most moving, beautiful love song ever written and none renders it better than Roberta Flack
No one can replicate this masterpiece. I am just blessed to be able to hear her amazing voice. I dare you to feel her passion in this song
There are haunting songs, and then there is this masterpiece.
One of the best female vocalist of ALL times......xx a voice like no one ever - I KNOW it sure MOVED moi........xxxxx
One of the greatist singers of all time!!!!! One of the best songs of all time!!! WOW!!!
My God, I could listen to this woman sing all day. She really puts everything she has into a song. She is very special.
The greatest female voice of my lifetime..hands down.
At 70 years of age,I unashameably cry, every time I hear this beautiful song.
I have heard this song many many times, but never realized its significance. I lost my wife Wanda to cancer 1 May 2018, and this song touched a memory of the first time I ever saw her face way back on 5 Mar. 1960. I fell in love with her then and I still love her today.

No belting necessary when a voice is as pure and beautiful as this.
Man she is SO BEAUTIFUL. And SINGS LIKE An Angel...If only the world could listen, really listen, and stop all the hatred for one another. What a wonderful world it would be. Thank you very much for posting this wonderful song..

What this song captures is the exquisite agony that passion and love can be.
My father loved this song. I think it is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

Zo mooi... Dit voor mijn meisjes, waar ik zo van hou. De diepe liefde van een moeder naar haar dochter(s).
No one can compare her to version. Her voice is beautiful and so is she.

So many have tried but no one does this song like Roberta Flack .....so full of heart
I’ve got a lump in my throat, just beautifully sung by the one & only Ms Flack

The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and the stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and the endless skies, my love
To the dark and the endless skies
And the first time ever I kissed your mouth
I felt the earth move in my hand
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command, my love
That was there at my command, my love
And the first time ever I lay with you
I felt your heart so close to mine
And I knew our joy would fill the earth
And last till the end of time, my love
And it would last till the end of time, my love
The first time ever I saw your face
Your face
Your face
