  • Why do birds
    Suddenly appear?
    Everytime you are near
    Just like me
    They long to be
    Close to you
    Why do stars
    Fall down from the sky?
    Everytime you walk by
    Just like me
    They long to be
    Close to you

This song brings tears to my eyes. Me and my husband danced to this song back in 1972 when we were 18. He proposed a year later. We spent 31 years together. He was the light of my light, the fire that kept me living. He fathered my children. They were best 31 years of my life I could ever have asked for. Cancer took him early. He only had 50 years...I look back on this song and smile, it represents the life we shared and the years we cherished together. You will forever be in my heart David

Multitudes of people across all generations and nations are listening to the legendary Carpenters for the first time or the umpteenth time. They are sighing in awe because of the breadth and depth of the Carpenters' remarkable and timeless talent.

The first Carpenters song I heard of was “For All We Know”, in 1970, as I followed the weekly newspaper Top 20 hits. One of the number one hits was “Knock Three Times” by Dawn. “For All We Know” was released after “Close to You” and “We’ve only just Begun”. So I wasn’t too far behind from the time The Carpenters became famous. The Beatles were way ahead of my time with their number one hits in 1964. Somehow I followed songs into the 1980s and 1990s. I got disengaged from rock and roll after the turn of the century. So Taylor Swift doesn’t mean much to me.

If Only... I think Karen realized how much she was loved & revered in the Industry. There was no shortage of proof there, ever! What mattered was her mother's opinion of & how she regarded Karen. Always putting Rich high on pedestal, NEVER showing love or appreciation for her daughher & treating her like a so-so band member, rather than a daughter.

I am Japanese. I didn't understand English when in junior high school. But I have loved Western music so much ever since. I sang along with Karen's voice over and over again. So I learned English words from Karen, just like a baby learns words from his or her mother. Most Japanese study English so hard, not because they are interested in English, but because they just want to go to a named university to earn fame and money. So I regret that we Japanese stop learning English after entrance exams. But I keep listening to Western music, singing along with Karen, and learning English. I have to be grateful to Western Music. Thanks a lot.

Jezzca Gevila Music is subjective. This isn't what music "should be", nor should any genre be the centre of music.
Some music relaxes you, some might make you fall asleep... But on the other end of the spectrum, music can empower you, fill you with energy and make you want to dancw until you collapse from exhaustion.

@@austinbethel2137 You're most likely right. Besides didn't Richard have quite a few problems of his own (quaaludes and so on)? But the media and especially her mother kept pushing her down. Supposedly their mother wanted Richard to be "the real star" and when Karen really took the limelight it left no doubt who's the center of attention, rightfully so though, once in a mankind kind of voice she had. So perhaps this "disappointment" kind of urged their mother to play Karen down in a way which would most definitely (in any young person's case) have an impact on a still developing delicate mind, which would later unravel for example in such a tragic way it did with Karen.

This is Homer and Marge's love song which was played when they first meet (Season 2, Episode 12: "The Way We Was").
It was used again in 'The Simpsons Movie' with Homer and Marge dancing at their wedding and on "Treehouse of Horror XXIII" when alternate universe Marge sees a pile of Homers who were all defeated by Artie Ziff.
This was even used as a musical doorbell when Marge bought it (Season 10, Episode 17: "Maximum Homerdrive".)

I've gotta stop listening to music of the 60's and 70's--all I do is cry because they touch me to the core. This is the last song I'm listening to today because when I reminisce about these decades, I realize how awesome life was back then.

I reminisce about them and I wasn’t even alive then hahaha I would love to take a time machine and just go back to the 70’s and 80’s and see what things were like. Great music and great movies

It's good to have nostalgia, and remember good times. But I realized I don't want to always think of the past, a time you can never get back, as the happy days. You have to make now the happy days. Or else my childhood would always be the best days instead of enjoying my own children's childhood as just as great times. Peace!

Me in 2022, I have all their albums and CD’s now from the cloud. Funny story, way back when in the 70’s my grandmother wanted to go to the mall. She said since you took me I will buy you an album. When we got home she said I want to hear the music. The Carpenters album Close to you is what I picked. When she hear the first song. She wanted to hear the total album as all her other grand children were rock and roll. I was blessed.

Whats amazing is she sounds like the original recording from the studio. Goes to show that she never used editing. Wonderful Voice.

Matt, that is the original recording, at that time on TV it was all lip synced. Unless you thought those guitars worked without cords, or the boom mounted mikes of the era had blue tooth?

This is the type of music I listened to in the early 70's before I discovered bands like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. This song stands the test of time. Simply beautiful.
