I see a lot of commenters claiming that the bots are being used to find blocked words and possibly dox creators. Personally, I don't think there is any merit to that theory. From what I can tell, this theory was first posed by someone who was basing their knowledge off a total of 2 comments. And that is a totally valid thought to have when you are confronted with 12 seemingly random names in your comment section. However, my data across dozens of comments leads me to believe the pool of names this bot picks from is very limited, and entirely random. It is nearly impossible for the people behind these bots to find out why their comments aren't showing up, as I have had plenty of these "six name" comments end up in my spam filter despite not having any blocked words. As for the addresses, like I've mentioned, these aren't at all related to real addresses. They are completely randomly generated (and oftentimes nonsensical), and always follow a specific format of 3-5 numbers and two words, which isn't applicable to most addresses. They aren't parsing information and searching for blocked words, as they would need to post millions of comments on A SINGLE CHANNEL just to attempt to identify a single blocked word. And even then, there is no way for a bot to truly discover blacklisted words and names, as these types of comments are more commonly getting flagged as spam by RUclips, meaning it won't show up regardless.
they are totally trash for searching what you can't say on a channel, even if you say 200 unique words in a contextualized comment and it is taked down you have the possibility some of that word in the frame is the problem or they just get you. A possible way to use it is to ensure if you can say suspect message in small/medium channel without get blocked
Yeah, it does sound far-fetched, but I do think if they see there's as little as 1% chance it might work in the tiny time frame it wasn't on the spam filter yet, they'll surely have a go and try it out
I’ve never had much of a problem with bots on my channel, but I’ve gotten a handful of these comments and it’s so confusing. Glad to see your coverage on it!
what i know about bots is that they'll sometimes even copy comments from another user, meaning it's possible to see one comment repeated a million times. but it can be exploited, in ways i will not tell. just know it involves talking about innapropriacy.
Maybe they're trying to reverse engineer your name and adress because some people have them blacklisted? would make sense why there are duplicates because you can't see comments with blacklisted names in them and so they can single out which name is blacklisted by comparing which comments aren't able to be found?
Yea I was also thinking this, they can also dual purpose them, get some comment history for the bit accounts, while finding names/addresses for whatever reason (which is why the addresses aren’t real, they can just say numbers and streets, and they’re more likely to get one of the two right than guessing the full thing correct)
Thanks on spreading the word Sully about the bots along with their behavioural patterns with us today. I'll definitely keep my eye out on the open on my channel even though it's small still. But better be careful than sorry. :)
I personally haven't gotten any of these bot comments myself, but it's nice to at least be aware and know the proper action to take when they do show up! Thank you! :)
your theory sounds more likely, but I think it might be used to try and bypass something, like restricting certain comments, or bot accounts being created in general
You want RUclips to deal with those bot commenters, are you mad? They're too busy shoving as many ads as possible down our throats so hard, they come out the other end.
DUDE EARLIER I WAS WATCHING A MUSIC VIDEO I SAW A FREAKING CONTINENT OF THESE BOTS SPAMMING NAMES IN THE COMMENTS (The ironic thing is that you can find the names of the band members by a simple google search or just listening to certain songs) If anybody wants the youtube video its called Older - They Might Be Giants (best, offical video)
I watched someone else, talking that these comments a) store data b) are made to stalk the creator, your gonna ban the ones that will use your name or adress, so they will know its yours
I saw a video a while ago about how these comments are trying to figure out youtuber's personal information, by seeing which words get blocked since youtubers are able to block certain words from being posted in the comment section Edit: I was able to find the video again, it's "How Bots Use YT Comments To Find Personal Info" by HGModernism
I just think it's weird that youtube doesn't shadow ban/auto flag comments under 10 words. Like, If you are saying even as little as 9 words, is there even any thought worth reading in your comment? I feel like the comments that are only around 6 words are either links that no one will nor should ever click on (shoutout to the pinned comment) or braindead comments like "bots are stupid". I feel like youtubers would have such a better time if comments that are under 10 words get sent to their spam box where the youtuber can manually review them. They are just waste of space nothing-comments. Barely even engaging.
1060 West Addison (sorry, I’m a simple person with poor impulse control, and if I see a chance to reference a movie with BOTH Aretha Franklin and Carrie Fisher… I’m going to pull the trigger. My profusiest apologies. Thanks for an interesting video!)
It's not to build a channel history - They're testing to see what words you've blocked in your comment section. As a creator, you can block words and phrases such as your own name or your own address to prevent people from doxing you in the comments. They're checking if the comments get removed by your spam filter and trying to work out your personal information by throwing random names at your blacklist, hoping to find the right name that they can later use to build info on you, likely to scam your audience.
these bots eventually writing a real name/address remind me of the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy bit: "There's an infinite number of monkeys outside who would like to talk with us about a script for hamlet they've worked out"
