- Saturday 2nd July 2016 saw the Opening of the new session of The Scottish Parliament, and the Black Watch paraded down The Royal Mile from Edinburgh Castle to The Scottish Parliament.
This is the song "Heilan' Laddie" also known as "Highland Laddie"
"Highland Laddie", also known as "Hielan' Laddie", is the name of a Scottish popular folk tune "If Thou'lt Play Me Fair Play", but as with many old melodies various sets of words can be sung to it, of which Robert Burns's poem "Highland Laddie" is probably the best known.
Highland Regiments raised in the 18th and early 19th centuries employed many unique symbols to differentiate themselves from other regiments and enlisted distinctive music to announce their arrival, but as a result of the Cardwell Reforms of 1881, all British Army Highland Regiments were required to use "Highland Laddie" as their regimental march. Over time, many of these regiments had managed to return to their pre-Cardwell marches when, in March 2006, the establishment of the Royal Regiment of Scotland saw the disappearance of all Scotland's historic infantry regiments and their distinctions, including music, and the adoption of a new regimental march, "Scotland the Brave". "If thou'lt play me fair play" has been reworked several times since Burns set down his words, Donkey Riding being one variant.

NOTE TO ALL PIPE BANDS! These pipes and drums march erect with eyes forward....so much better than the slouching tepid appearance of so many civilian bands. Let us not forget we are pipes and drums, heritage and all, we are not just a street mob.
100% correct. Always annoys me to see pipers and drummers marching like they are apologising for being alive.
@@MrBagpipes1971 what we don't march like that infacted we march like the video left right left light eyes in the tipper drummer but pipers eyes forward
AND DON'T FORGET YOUR RIFLES!!!
Makes the Scot in me rise up and March long side
I was very impressed with this song. I had to hear it as it was played while liberating parts of Norway during the war. In gratitude, please allow me to recommend my own country's HMKG. Specifically the Oladrill.
My grandfather was a piper in the Blackwatch. A gentleman but you wouldn't want to cross him.
Theres no no feeling on earth than the pipes and marching behind them .
Both my dad and father in law had memories of hearing this tune coming through the mist during WW2 in France knowing that help was on the way. My dad said that if there was one thing that scared the Germans more than the pipes then it was the prospective arrival of a number of pinched faced Scots with fixed bayonets
I read something once that I'll paraphrase. It was something like, if you're on the battlefield and you hear the pipes coming, depending on whose side you are on, either help is coming, or hell is on the way.
If the Black Watch regiment themselves won't make the enemy want to turn and flee, then the accompanying sound of the bagpipes surely will.. 👍👌
Its such a pity that 'Tony wmd bLiar' basically destroyed the history of Army Regiments.
I had to hear it, because I heard this was played while a Norwigan fjord and island was liberated in WWII. Very well performed, lads!
I prefer this version than the version I play in my pipe band
The Scottish regiments have the best uniforms in the British army
Just to think that one mad piper played this on D-Day.
Freaken highlan' laddae!! The sound you don't wanna hear if you're french
Not just that, if you hear 'The 92nd (Gordon Highlanders) will advance' then you know there's no way out. the next thing you hear is 'La garde recoule'......Napoleons old Guard for the first time runs...…….
I dont know...the Yanks at New Orleans and the Japanese in Malaya might disagree...
Lads it might be worth remembering that the French Army gave the Scottish Regiments a good beating at The Battle of Fontenoy.

According to another video uploader Highland Laddie is "blocked in 240 countries". Does anyone know what's up with that? Obviously this is still here....however, what happened to the full parade video linked in the description?
Maybe 240 countries are ruled by Hanoverians.
There are only 195 countries on the planet so I don’t know where he got that
That's why I'm here. Checking that claim out. Obviously not accurate. Phew! But is this the tune to the lyrics. Weep had mair, my Heilin laddie...weep nae Mair, the battle's ower.? I don't think so.
After a night's sleep, I think the lyrics are weep/march nae mair, my soldier laddie. Different song, different melody... it's been years since I heard the auld, Scottish songs sung. The Battle's O'er.
@@sovietunion6598 That we know off.
This was the first song the piper played on d-day as they stormed sword beach
Amazing to think of it
The krauts didn’t shoot the piper because they thought he was crazy
The guy to his left got shot in the face as they disembarked.
The grit of those Men
Dear aneily, please don't refer to the germans as "krauts" it is insulting.
1. Pipers don’t play songs. They play tunes. As in Tunes of Glory.
2. They maybe Germans today to you. But they were Krauts when we fought them and Krauts when they were shooting at us.
Pipers play tunes, not songs.
Thank you boys 🙏👍👍👍👍
Beautiful also, Jim! :o)
beautiful. sound. of bagpipes ...
Scottish and f****** proud.
W scotsman 🇬🇧🏴❤🏴🇬🇧 God save our brotherly union! From England
Wasn't this the tune that Piper played on D-Day for Lord Lovat?
I love Scotland
This always reminds me of General Gordon.
My old Battalion quick march .1 Scots Guards. Love it .
Heighland Laddie 😍😍
Note- by tradition the pipers wear a different sett, Royal Stuart?, to the Black Watch tartan.
The pipers of the Black Watch wear the Royal Stewart due to them being a Royal regiment and having permission from HM the King to wear his tartan.
I've been reading a book by a war correspondent in Korea and the Scots regiment stationed in Hong Kong has just arrived to join the UN forces. They are playing this song as they marched through the streets.
And yes, they're all wearing kilts. They won't switch into battle dress until they head to the front.
It does not say what regiment they are but they have been brought across by the Australian Destroyer Bataan.
Do you know what year it was?
What ive found is that there were 3 scottish units in Korea: The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, the Black Watch, and the King's own Scottish Borderers. The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders were in Hong Kong 1951, but that seems to be after they did their term of service in Korea (8 months from 1950-1951)
Respect.
Billy Connolly was right if you saw these guys coming you'd run lol no wonder the empire got so big
The Black Watch is no longer a British Regiment, it is part of the Scottish, Welsh and Irish Division and no longer exists a a Scots Regiment
3 SCOTS The Black Watch
And this is WHY Scotland must remain as a British Isle instead of it's own country. Scotland DOES NOT REALIZE it will lose MANY British things if they decide to exit out. And this is coming from an American that lives in a country that used to be a British Colony before 1776.
What will Scotland lose when wee have an independent Scotland free from English rule??🤔maybe free from nuclear weapons bases, and not having to go to war when it has f all to do with Scotland!oh and maybe a better fitba team!🤙👌
Ive just been reading your comment again,it makes no sense you say Scotland must remain a British isle?? Then you say Scotland would lose many British things😂😂😂sorry but you really dont know what your talking about, and why put "does not realize" in CAPS and "many" in CAPS do you think you know more than Scots themselves??your American which is fine by me but you really should stay oot of Scotland's affairs, and to say we would lose oor heritage of pipes and drums if we were independent is ridiculous, they were good enough for Robert the Bruce and Bonnie Prince Charlie, they will remain Scottish no matter!🤔🍀🎗🇻🇦
But all the coal and oil we have also water we can sell to drouted places and oil we could sell to America or France we could ask for supplies
