  • Honda HR173 Mower ( Mend It Man will get it sorted 💪🏻) Including Detailed Carb Clean 🪥🪛🔧🧽
    Hi welcome to another Mend It Man video in this video, I’m back on the mowers and the first one on the bench is a Honda HR173. I don’t believe there’s to much wrong with this mower, but I do my usual carb clean (detailed carb clean on this one) then if all is good just a standard clean & service will be needed. I’m hopeful this one will be an easy one for mend it man to fix , ready to flip in spring time. Thanks for watching and your support 🙂👍

    Please Subscribe to my channel - I have lots of machines which means going forward I will never be short of content, lots of my videos are small engine related but I do have bigger vehicles to which I also like to work on and improve.
    JUST TO NAME SOME-
    2x Land Rover Defenders, Subaru Impreza WRX Turbo Wagon, VW T4 Transporter, Ford Transit Campervan.
    5x Puch Maxi Mopeds, a Lambretta Scooter, a Yamaha MX100 motorcycle.
    Also lots and lots of garden power equipment. All this will give me years and years of content, so with all that it makes my channel well worth Subscribing to 😀
    A bit about me I grew up around engine’s as my dad was always a car mechanic and that’s how I learnt about them and liked working on engine’s. As the years have gone on my passion for working on engines has grown even more, unfortunately for me my dad slowed down working on cars when I was around 20 in the 90s, So the career I always thought I would have didn’t materialise and I become a gardener, but what do gardeners use? Power tools so that’s when I learnt all about power tools small engine, 80% of my work tools Mowers, Strimmers, Hedge Trimmers, Blowers were bought secondhand and most of them broken and I fixed them up. Most have been high end tools, Honda, Stihl, Kubota, Kawasaki, Husqvarna etc etc the list goes on I’ve worked on loads and usually managed to fix tools that were destined for the scrap heap. I have learnt so much and I pass a massive amount of that on in my videos, so watching my video could save you a small fortune in repair bills, so another great reason to subscribe to my channel.
    Going forward I have plans to faze out my day job and work with the engine stuff much, much more that’s my dream, I also like restoring machines as well. So I’m always adding more and more tools to help me along the way. So the more support I have on RUclips means that my dream may come sooner than I think it will 🤞 I’ll do my bit with the video if you can do your bit to help it could be a great journey forward, thank you for watching my channel I massively appreciate it 🙂👍

      This is a side valve engine, if it’s the same as a briggs, the valve need to be ground down with a grinder, usually don’t need doing but occasionally they do 🙂👍

    Hi could you let me know if the hr 173 is a two stroke or four stroke.also what oil it takes in the oil sump .and do I put any oil in with the petrol if yes what oil .great video 🫡

    • @milan71mm
      @milan71mm Месяц назад

      4 stroke. Run any unleaded in it from petrol station like your car. 5-30 oil in motor. Get from bunning. Briggs and straton or can use motor oil 5-30w.. Any brand. Just don't over fill it . Better to be abit under then over full.

    Most of the time I just clean my carbs manually as well. Like you if they are stubborn then I use the ultra cleaner.

    • @menditman2004
      @menditman2004  2 года назад

      Hi Bruce manual clean with some carb spray 9 out of 10 times does the job just fine. I’m just a man in his shed if I was a big business then I’d have the ultra sonic cleaner on the go most of the time, but the time it takes me to get the UC out I can clean the carb manually. Thanks for watching 🙂👍

    Great video, coming to you from Canada and looking for your help. I have just inherited my father's Honda HR173, and I discovered that the main jet screw slot has been reined. Any suggestions on how to remove it or a replacement carburetor (mower is surging badly and needs a cleaning). He bought it new in 1987 and has always had it serviced at the dealer so not sure what happened to the carburetor. Once again thanks for the video and looking forward to any advice.

    Great vid! Any guidance on setting the levers/ cables? Managed to get a very neglected one going but seems to rev hard & when easing of throttle it stalls? Throttle seems to be held open by the spring on the metal rod that activates throttle?

      Hi great stuff, as for the issue it’s hard for me to know what’s happening, check the governor arm / spring isn’t stuck this can easily happen it’s tight around that throttle mechanism area. Let’s me know how you get on, thanks for watching 🙂👍

      Thanks @@menditman2004 Should the governor shaft spring back as there is no spring in it. Just a split pin at the back. Or do you mean the actual arm. Weirdly that arm seems to spring to let the throttle run open! Such a complicated but clever mech all round there! Ta

      @@JustinHarrisPhotography There should be a rod on the governor arm that goes to the carb, there should be a long spring that goes along with it , is that in place?

    Great video Luke! Once the ethanol fuel is widely used in the UK you won't see many carbs that look that nice inside. They used to look that nice here in the states but now when you tear one apart it looks like chalk and aluminum rot. Chris B.

    • @menditman2004
      @menditman2004  2 года назад +1

      Hi yes I’ve seen a few like that, but they have been left many many years. Mowers that haven’t been used for a year or two generally aren’t that bad, but as you say with the ethanol that will change. I’ve noticed my stihls I use for work don’t like the E10, I wanted to experiment using them on it, but I will be switching to a better grade fuel for them. Thanks for watching 🙂👍
