in this video i pick up a free mower. its a Honda HR173 that i worked on last season. its in need of a bit of work but i think with a little help it will run again.. thanks for watching . here is my channel wish list if you would like to help out with some tools and spares

Just to test the engine you can always use a corded electric drill with appropriate socket to turn the engine over. I am thinking you need to get Riley Boy a very small engine, clean it up and let him wrench on it. Take it apart and put it back together again. Hope you get a recoil setup for that good running mower. Good to see Riley boy again. He is a keeper for sure. I like the way he models your behaviors.
D Butler hi ya how’s it going. Well it runs, not very well but it still works. Hopefully getting a pull cord for it in a week or so.

Yeah looks like a common problem
I was thinking Mick. On The recoil. Try taking the sticker off the top. It might be a plastic wedge one in the center.

Well it fired up and must have used fuel from the carb as it ran for a bit more that the carb sray squirt. That pull cord is a pain eh!!!! Riley is learning a lot too.

Great vid buddy as always...mower season is nearly upon us have a mountfeild m3 needs new head gaskets and that should be ready hater 38 harrier new drive to fit Honda hrb425 new boss and blade and new drive and cable Suffolk punch fixed and ready for spraying and that crappy macculloch strimmer I carnt get running so enough to be going on with just fit a new door to shed and knocked walls down to make bigger all go buddy......😁😁👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

@@themowerman may need to pick you're brains buddy over this mountfeild m3 if it's ok mick just sorting the valves out as it's only 50% compression but it's the piston rings that are buggered at a guess,but carnt find how to take the engine cover off iv took fly wheel off.do I have to totally remove engine to split the engine block any ideas would be great mick thanks in advance buddy,1st time getting to piston mt....

no need to buy a new one there are two lugs on top the metal cap you will see a void in the plastic cog that you fit the cord to just line them up then jobs done

You spent way too much time screwing around with the pull cord. You could buy a brand new one for about $15.00. At some point it's costing you money to try and repair it!!!
But it might help someone who can't afford a recoil.. always another way of looking at it mate

Love those Honda lawn mowers!! I bought mine in 1985, we change the oil in it every year & it still runs fine and cuts my 1/4 acre lawn! It virtually always starts the first time! I think it's going to run forever!!

Nope I never could one to fit it..so it was sold as is
@@themowerman One near me is for sale at $30, but needs a recoil too. I will call the local huge Honda shop near me and see what access they have for one. They sell every kind of Honda piece of equipment made. I love your channel Mick. I can tell you are a good man from everything about you and your channel. Its knackered Mick Mowers Buddy chuck it in parts bin lol. Little dab of grease it helps slide so they say 😂 Its got plenty water in it are you sure ROFL.That mower is nearly as old as me and you. Ok i was wrong it works well enough a few tune ups it will be fine. I think it was the wee man that gave you the luck to get her going lol. Good Job mate.👍

Bit late now but I,m having the exact problem, when I,ve looked at the parts diagram there should be a “ friction washer “ where the spring sits on, could be the fault. As I said it’s a bit late now as seems this video was uploaded a year ago.
Likewise, I had a similar starting problem that I had with an additional HR173 I bought for spares, now fully working with the friction washer under the spring added back in.
Problem now is that after it’s been running for a while and stops, it now needs 20+ minutes wait before it will start again,… I did only buy it for spares, so …
Hi Mick, first post here, loving the video's, just started doing lawnmowers myself, love it, anyway you'll never guess what I picked up yesterday for £30? Yip a Honda HR 173 in absolute great condition really can't get over how good nick it is in considering the age ( I believe they stopped producing them in 1989 ) think it has maybe been stored in a garage under a sheet and forgotten about. Haven't managed to get it started yet ( pull cord a bit stiff) This is my next project so will keep me busy.

im sure mick one of those recoils will show up via the internet or maybe another Honda mower like that to far gone, hey just curious could u switch the starter cup on it from a different Honda and a different recoil maybe could work then? just a thought.
Turning_wrenches85 yeah it’s possible and something I may have to do. I’m not giving up on it. It may have to sit in the store until one turns up.

Ereplacement parts shows it as discontinued, but there’s gotta be one out there. Somewhere
