Pocket 8 BIT Emulator FAULTY From eBay | Can I FIX It?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 дек 2022
- I purchased this LDK Pocket thing from eBay for £5.99. It was sold as "broken, doesn't turn on"...
...and sure enough, it doesn't power on, so let's see if we can fix it!
Hope you enjoy!
Steve
PS. I'm not an expert in repairs at all. I do this for fun, and it may not be the best or safest way to go about repairing broken stuff. I'm pretty good at melting plastic though. Please don't copy me - I'm an idiot.

Stupid Game!
today I agree even more with you! Yie-Ar Kung Fu is indeed a stupid hard game! so much time have I lost on that thing... and so much patience too!
congrats on your repair! did you found the component?
Love your hard works
A well-deserved like for the end credit song alone! ;-)
Very!
I liked the music of 'Way of the exploding fist", another Kung-Fu game.
The best thing about this channel is the fact you have no clue what your next move is. Its not pre scripted. And you admit you don't know things. Your dry humor just tops it off.
honestly the most impressive thing about these videos is that he always seems to have the right capacitor or component hanging around lol
One of if not the best RUclips creators to watch for repairs ever! Nothing monotonous or boring, just great content!!!
It's true
Not the best. Other people wouldn't hesitate so much for a capacitor in that place. He's just a good learner. I doubt very much that he is really a technician.
Not a tech just a guy with a good personality and a good way of expressing it. Criticism can be good to express towards one's that need it, but believing this guy has a full time job and does this for fun and taping it for us to all see tells me he does not need it from randoms on the net
Yeah I'm sick of 1 hour videos. Keep it under 30minutes!
Have you watched my videos? People are saying I’m one of the best too.
It amazes me how many times looking for the short finds the fault. Nice job Steve.
Thanks WanJockey! Yeah, short hunting is usually the best way to go! 👍
Those SMD capacitors have a tendency to internally short. You can see the circuit it was attached to had a via so it looks like that capacitor was only for filtering since it was going to ground. This means it would probably have worked without it.
"probably untested" on Ebay usually means the previous owner used a can opener to dissect the device, "cleaned" the PCB with steel wool on a belt-sander, spit their chewing gum inside, put it back together with one Ikea screw thats too big, plugged it into a car jumpstarter for 36 hours, used it for an ashtray, then put it up for sale.
I'm surprised there was no hamster poop inside, along with saltwater snail eggs.
Brother Steve was Kung fu-faulty finding. He soldered the caps fast as lighting, In fact, it was a little bit frightening' But.. he air-flowed them with expert timing. 😂👍
🤣 love it brother Steve! 🤣
Don't encourage him!!!
Yeah, don‘t!
Nicely done Steve 👌
Cheers Vince! 👍
Great stuff Steve - the 60s Batman cut aways really got me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣 cheers Greg!
I don't care what anybody says, the raps are an absolute highlight of these videos!
I concur.
Same here

A fellow Prodigy fan salutes you.
Steve, you are imo one of the most entertaining fixers on YT. Just with some basic knowledge fixing stuff and give second life to electronics.
Great Fix. I don't comment often but I really need to tell you that you are inspiring to me. I am 58 and just discovering tinkering(long story). I now have a few non working projects of my own to work on. Sony Sports Discman X 2. A Fitbit watch with a failing battery and a couple others. Thank you
Stez you're getting better and better at these fixes, love your reaction's, keep them coming.
I always enjoy your videos. Hard to believe you are a barkeep during the day and repair “tech” during off time. Keep up the great work!
I've been given a caravan tv/dvd that was new, worked for a few hours, then died completely. I'd normally open it up for a 'look' anyway but watching your videos has given me the confidence that I might actually be able to find out what's wrong with it!
It could still end up a 'stupid telly' but we shall see.
EDIT: I actually found a faulty component!! It took a while, and my USB microscope, but I found a blown-up 8-pin voltage regulator! It's about 3mm long so there's no way I could replace it even if I could find one to buy, but I found the bugger.
Be careful. Tube tvs have a ton voltage going through them
@@thadofalltrades Should be ok - it's a Bauhn b-215fdv LED HD thingy. Quite new, no tubes, no valves ;)
@@simonsackett Discharge the capacitors before touching them, they are what store the electricity. If it has a plug rather than adaptor some of them caps will store mains level voltage for quite some time
@@aethersx2-samsunggalaxys206 Yes, thanks. It has a 12v adaptor. I've done a lot of electrical work but never really got involved with electronics very much.
@@simonsackett If its running on an adaptor you will be fine then
As a general rule, a capacitor at the input of a load circuit is used to filter the power. If you don't, it should work fine anyway.
Is there a general rule for size?
@@dacodemonk depends a bit on the current flow but i think 10uF should be good in most cases :)
My guess is that those caps are responsible for decoupling the supply to the battery charge circuit. So, 100nF is a fair value. I don't know whether it would've helped during this repair, but some datasheets have 'typical' component configurations included to give the designers an idea on what components to place to use their parts. I'm guessing this datasheet was one of those that didn't. Regardless, an excellent repair! :D
Yet again it's Steve 1, broken thing 0. 🤩 You've become one of my favorite fixers out there. I'm learning how various things breakdown and can be fixed, and am entertained to boot.
Yay! New Steve Video 🙌🙌 Recently subbed and have binged all your videos 😁
Great as always!
Soon the 100k!!!! I've been only there since 30k, and it was not so far ago, huge congratulations for the increase !
Thanks MGN! Really appreciate the support! 👍
Deffo the best fix it channel out there, of course in my own opinion. Cheers
Another one bites the dust! Great work as usual, Captain Bodge!
Good to see you fix the Pocket 8 BIT there Steve another fine repair you did there - nice 1 mate 👍
Discovered your channel about a week ago, and I think I've nearly watched through everything so far 😂 Thanks for the great content. I think I'll be getting my solder station out of storage 🤔
Jealous of you; I wish I could watch all of them "for the first time" again. Welcome man! You're in for a ride!
Thanks for the Prodigy part. Loved it!
Nicely done Steve! Well done!
Great job steve, love how the effort and man hours were actually more than the item probably costs new. However as we know thats not the point.
I swear I love your videos man. Keep up the awesome work
wonderful content like always Steve.. 👌
Thanks Racoon, much appreciated! 👍
Thanks Steve. Really made me chuckle.
The 103 resistor looked like "EOL" (end of life), haha. Nice to see stuff repaired.
Nicely done bro, love your videos.
Great video as always. Also watching a lot of older videos of yours lately (even found the second channel), and it is so cool to see your skill and also the gear upgrading with all the videos. :D From only the silicon mat to having what it looks like ESD mat below it. From a wooden desk in I would guess the kitchen to a dedicated lab. But one thing stayd: You being charming :D *thumbs up*
second channel?
Second channel? You mean there is more of this good stuff? Where is it?
@@remko second channel is maybe a "big word", it looks more like it was his old channel since by now it is unuseed for a year. Still i came across it x)
great fix steve 👍, i love your vids
I came across your repair feed by way of you past! Get your word out as it is top notch!
Really enjoyed this fix. On the first pan over that area I was like „that black dot, I bet it’s shot“ and it was. Sometimes it’s the easy fixes 😍
Same. I wanted him to pan back but looks like he missed it first time.
Thanks for getting the funk out Steve (and the repair) 😄
Every time I watch you Steve you get better and better and please keep the Batman logo keep them coming 😊
You have developed a wonderful CAPACITY for fixing Stupid Games :) Excellent job mate... very nice
🤣 haha, thanks Ron! 👍
Bravo 👏🏼. Great work
Well done Steve nice fix, btw MLC’s are normally to filter noise or ripple to ground they’re not always necessary 😊
very true!!! They smooth out that voltage line
Thanks for a great video wish you, your family and friends a very happy Christmas. 🎅🤶🎄☃️🎁
Happy weekend Stez🔥
I'd buy a Xmas album with you singing classic Xmas songs in your own inimitable style
nicely done steve
It's truly amazing how often it's just one component that burned out or whatever that replacing that fixes the whole thing.
Well done on this one!
I'm an hw engineer and I really like your video, as there are fun ! FYI From user guide evaluation board of the LTC405, the Cbat is 1μF, X5R, 10V, 20%, 0603

i wanted it to blow up - nice fix great video much fun
Nice fix there Steve
Another great video. Entertaining music as well
I always try to make sure to time my thumbs up for the songs so you never stop making them. OG Tidder lol
Thank you for the great video and the Out of Space ear worm for the day. You did take my brain to another dimension.
Another great video! Thank you
Great job! Another toy saved from the depths of shortage!!!
Ive been using warngins as part of my vocabulary at work now. Thanks for that.
Good to see you're still soldering with a blowdryer.
Nice video, as always ❤
Pity there are no boardviews for these types of boards. Nice win enjoyed it. thanks for sharing batman......👍
but will it charge?!! Love ya vids man!
Just found your videos they are just amazing and funny nice 👌
Well done!
The ending song literally shine the Christmas season❤
I hoped that he was going to sing the whole song.
Very Nice! 👍
Thanks Chris! 👍
nobody commented on the fact that he was defeated by Wang? Still, well done on the repair! Always impressed.
Great job!
I don't mean to be that guy, but the raps dude. When I subbed about six months ago, I really loved the voice over Steve. It was chill and I could watch the dissemble stage and it was relaxing. I love your content, but can we have voice over Steve back?
I have to admit I was a little disappointed when the end-song wasn't the hinted The Prodigy's Outer Space @9:32. Other than that, again, as always: great work. Really enjoyed the video. Stupid game indeed. I'll be waiting for any Prodigy song in your upcoming videos Steve!
Me too, i was waiting for it, maybe copyright issues? So fortunate to have seen them in 2017 with Keef, then saw them again in summer this year, atmosphere was incredible both times 😁🐜
@@charliehd6870 I was at the last European performance (2018-12-09), a few months before Keef... you know. It was A-MA-ZING.
Great Video. Go on.
That was the best beat so far no fast forwarding this time
nice short fix.... i liked the patreon rap this time :)
Amazing. You brought it back from the dead lol.
When you remove a small component with hot air for testing, just move it so one leg is still soldered down, that way it's easier to probe with the meter.
Smaller value caps like 1uF or 0,1uF is usually fitted besides other chips/components to smoothen out the ripple on VCC rails across the board. Further away from the chip = greater values are needed. But they should be fitted as close as possible to the VCC pin of a component. More then often it probably works without it. The schematics in the datasheet for LTH7 doesn't show that a cap is needed on pin 3 for the battery. So again, it will probably work without it as well as any random ceramic cap.
..."lets see if it explodes..." 😅 felt like you speaking out my thought
This guy is class 👏
well done
Thanks for putting the timecode for the end of that song :)
I'll never understand why there's a timestamp to skip the masterpieces that are the holy hand grenade patreon sub songs
Stezstix fix no.1 on RUclips right now
Your music is awesome Steve will you have "The Best of StezStiz Fix Xmas list"?
Some pleasingly-accurate flux application on this one
I subscribed at the Patreon rap. 🤗😂😂😂
i've got one of these, it plays mega drive, pc engine, snes and gba and other stuff really well
Really happy to see you've found success after the Yogscast
I love the patreon rap, skipping it is a sin!
wot a guess! nice one for the steve win
good channel my friend, I have the same LDK but the sound stopped working
Fun video what do you do with all the stuff you fix keep it?
that was expertly done. What brand of flux do you use as all the ones I seem to get are really gooey
Top tier patreon rap. Skippers are missing out.
Dang! You put in so much work for that stupid little console ha
Nice moves!
Awesome supporter song 👌
Surprised Stez missed the shorted cap when looking around the board. Even I saw it looked dodgy with the black spot on it. Also the resistor that tombstoned looked damaged, as the end contact was broken. That's why it tombstoned. Still if it works anyway......
Really loved this song
That's literally worth $7. Awesome fix though bro!
C'moooon, no one ever says "Nokia-off battery" and it's RIGHT THERE
my money is on the broken capacitor you lose is hiding inside the solder that was on the tip of that soldering iron
anyway another amazing fix and minor spoiler its yet another case of... stop throwing away stuff that may just be a simple fix
