Reddit post keeps talking about setting this and setting that with bindings and crap i cant figure it out its not working for me
Thank you for a quick, simple, and straightforward tutorial. While I do love the deep "make sure your chair has 8k stitches in it" type tutorials, sometimes I just want to get the info and move along. Great content, I liked the video and followed your channel. Look forward to more, thanks again.
That was a great intro. Tidy, relevant and to the point. Going to give this a spin tomorrow. Good work.
Simple, clear, and concise.
Bravo
An interesting and simple tutorial.
Really appreciate your effort!
Thanks, really hope they fix the afterburner by simply increasing throttle (like DCS) rather than having an amateurish "afterburner" button.
Exactly. What is the problem of having afterburner light when the throttle moves into afterburner range? I don't get it.
Just bind the afterburner toggle to your throttle key. It will do it automatically
I use an Xbox controller and my throttle is set to A. I binder the afterburners to A as well and they function normally
@@Swifteth_swiftethswifteth So there is only one stage afterburner? Real F/A-18E have 6 stage afterburner as I remember right.

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful tutorial.
First time I subscribe so quick to anyone because of such a good tutoroal!
Good stuff! Quick and easy to follow
Clean and concise, thanks man! 👍
Extremely useful video, thank you! 👍
Cheers for the tips my, flight is smoother now, got afterburners on and had my 1st sonic boom switching cameras from front to back (awesome)
Yeah they did well with the sonic boom in this can't wait for all the fighters to enable this feature.
Thanks for that. One more item for your startup checklist, ANTI-SKID should be on for field takeoff/landing and off for carrier.
Thank you!
Thanks for the tutorial! Enjoyed flying the F18 with coffee this morning! Could believe how fast I got from Orlando to Miami!
Glad I made it easy for you! Happy flying 😁
Great tutorial, thank you!
As an F-18 Mechanic, this is pretty solid. Hell yeah!
Wow, that looks great!
Thank you. I had issues figuring out that nav computer on my own.
Very helpful - thank you!
Thanks for the tips!
Really good tutorial. Finally learned how to use A/P lol

Excelente! Gracias!
I love you, man.
Thanks for helping me
This was helpful as I am a dedicated Tomcat pilot in msfs and getting used to the controls of the successor to the Tomcat was a challenge because of how modernized the Hornet is in comparison. Next time I get on to practice with this I will refer to this video to learn the systems better. I flew a short flight to an air base in Dayton Ohio (Wright-Patterson AFB) from Toledo Express and was able to do it all manually for that short flight but I want to see what it can do in a long flight from WPAFB to Dublin Ireland.
I have the F-14 and am struggling with that plane vs the F-15. I am getting a lot of auto deployment of the flaps and inability to retract even with increased airspeed. Any clues as to what I am doing wrong?
@@gusramage the F14 has auto flaps because of its sweep wing design, once you hit about 400kts the flaps level out. It’s to help keep the plane stable as it’s really really heavy and needs assistance in generating lift at lower speeds.
@@xTruthxWithinx Ahh. Thank you.
@@gusramage no problem, I have total time 20 hours flight time in a Tomcat out of 60 total. I usually do short flights and have done 2 continental flights in it. The A model has glove vanes that open at high speeds so make sure when you do your preflight setup you flip that switch. It’s located next to the landing gear lever and parking brake lever. You’ll thank me for the extra stability later, the B however doesn’t have that because when they redesigned it for that version they welded those shut and adjusted some small things on the fuselage to make it more stable in closed form. If you’re ever unsure what to do on the right panel where your light controls are there’s a panel box that has all the alerts that you’ll need to be aware of while flying. Take the extra time to learn the plane while stationary, it isn’t a race and practice makes perfect, if you’re curious what the switches do while airborne wait till you are at 45,000-50,000ft and auto pilot and heading holds are set as well as your speed locked in place and then you can start flipping stuff to see what they do. I’d recommend one switch at a time as if you flip too many you’ll flat spin and be unable to recover from it. I have done purposeful icing of the engines and purposeful flat spins to practice recoveries but save that for when you are more comfortable with it. Also DC designs has a manual available as well as a few video tutorials on Yt to help with your getting to know the Big Cat. I spent 5 real hours in the cockpit studying every switch and what they do so I know the plane like the back of my hand now. Happy flying!
@@gusramage the tomcat is easily the best fighter in the sim right now. are you guys able to get it started because none of the hud works for me and the fuel cutoffs no longer allow fuel into the engine so the aircraft even with autostart just sits and spools the left engine at like 20 percent rpm with no fuel flow.
Thaaanks so much !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wait… you’re telling me that the velocity vector gives you some sort of indication of where the plane will land? GENIUS
Yeah velocity vector is “you’re going here”. Look up the magic carpet approach 👍
I played this at 1080 and it made the video POP! It looked so real, I thought of logging it for flight hours! 😉
Thank you
Thanks so much. I had tried to take off but wasn’t working at all
With the altitude hold modes, you can increase or decrease the desired altitude with Ctrl+PageUp and Ctrl+PageDown for an automatic ascent/descent.
I haven't found an easy way to change desired heading (HSEL): the little switch which changes it below the lower left display is very slow, and the plane doesn't seem to respond to the relevant hotkeys (Ctrl+Insert, Ctrl+Delete).
There's a very good mod for this that allows you to see the wingtip vortices and vapour cone at high speed It renames the aircraft Super Worrier.
is there a mod for GForce effects too?
@@T1Earn you don t need mods for anyhting of these.
thanks
great video my man, but something I dont seem to understand is how do and connect simbrief to your aircraft, and also what aircraft type do you set your f18 on simbrief?
I don’t. I use the in-sim planner and ATC :)
Great video and very informative!
Does the FA-18 have more than 1 stage of afterburner? The control settings allow for up to 4 stages of afterburner.
I think there are smaller invisible detents within the “MAX” area on the throttle - hopefully they will match the different afterburner control assignments 😁
F18 in the real world has an afterburner fuel curve in the control box so it's not detents but a secondary area in the throttle. once you put the throttle past MIL into the A/B detent range, you are at minimum afterburner. the A/B then gradually lights more as you move the throttle to max. it should respond smoothly from min to max A/B at all times. its pretty awesome at night watching the burner cone move back and forth from the min to max settings.
Good day, can I manualy select the altitude in the F-18 with some switch or is it impossible at the monent? Thank you in advance for your reply.
Yup when in alt hold you can use hot keys Ctrl+PgUp/Dn to select a new target alt
Quick question from a dcs player, is the auto button on the HSI implemented? This would cycle through waypoints when you pass them and in coupled mode.
I *think* it was inop but I’d need to double check
Auto isn't implemented yet. hopefully they make this plane really good with the top gun update. I mean the F14 still blows this thing out of the water and it's currently broken in Update 7 so.
Thank you for the tutorial. Really helpful! I have a question though… I’m achieving roughly 600 knots with full afterburner. Is that what everyone else is currently getting? It’s obviously way too slow for an f18 at 10,000 ft lol. Probably just the sim but thought I’d ask
There's a difference between IAS and TAS (as in real life). Your ground speed is actually much higher than displayed.
@@TiJayFLY you are right, bit this thing struggles to break the sound barrier at full afterburner. You actually have to go into a dive, the plane is trash in my opinion.
The aircraft lacks acceleration as well. It takes forever to get to 400kts with no weapons or fuel tanks.
I sure wish the DC Designs F15 and F14 interiors looked as good as this free jet from Asobo. This is approaching DCS level of cockpit graphics.
Everything still looks a bit too clean, add some stains and smudges ;)
This is probably a silly question, as I'm relatively new.
But how an earth do you get to 150knots? even at the lowest power on the throttles, gears and flaps at the ready I barely get below 240knots.
Like any aircraft, it depends on your descent rate. If you’re straight and level with flaps/gear down and AT set to 150 (or AT off and throttle at idle), it’ll decelerate quickly. If you’re nose down at -1500fpm, it’ll struggle.
Great video, thank you. I still don't see how you cut off fuel or shut off the engines (not in VR)...Thanks for your help.
Edit: Quick video guide here ruclips.net/video/t0QCGnNpGVI/видео.html
I'm just starting out with FSX. Where can I obtain this to install for FSX? (Or similar F-18)
Ah nice! FSX is a fantastic platform with a lot of great DLC. I think DC Designs / Just Flight made a good F18. There’s also a freeware one from FlyAway Simulations
How do I get the plane? My Top Gun DLC pack is still downloading, do I automatically get the plane when it’s done?
Yup - although you should have it already, as this formed part of an update in late 2021.
I am having fuel issues on series x when fully fueled the f18 doesn't feed fuel into engines from Left main and Right main tanks. This only gives me 77% fuel capacity which runs out pretty quick, what am I missing?
This sounds like a bug to me - as far as I’m aware there’s no way to manually configure fuel flow. Happy to be corrected but given the “attention to detail” Asobo have paid to this plane as a whole, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just broken.
Hey brother can I ask you a question? Is the RNAV currently broken on FA 18? I’m having a hard time with it.
Almost certain it won’t fly RNAV. Pretty sure it puts you on an intercept heading and you have to fly the ILS manually (if there is one). If not, visual landing
Hello, I have problems with the rudder, both on the runway and with some others, such as in flight, where neither the keyboard nor the joystick can make it work. I've already checked the button mapping but it's still the same. Any idea how to fix it? It worked fine for a few days but again nothing. Thank you !!
I’ve heard loads of people complain about the rudder recently, but none of them have ever explained how they fixed it… maybe there was some kind of issue in SU9, but all I can suggest is re-assigning the axes really.
Is it possible to change to the F variant (two seat)?
Only the single seat is in MSFS as far as I’m aware
I see you've got waypoints on the right MFD. Did you load those with the flight planner beforehand? Have you figured out a way to display an HSI or at the very least, a VOR needle?
Yeah the route must be programmed in MSFS flight planner beforehand. This is the closest the MSFS F18 has to an HSI. I haven’t yet found a way to program VOR or ILS frequencies in the plane - it has TACAN but I think that’s for the upcoming carrier patch.
I know that, at least the legacy Hornets from DCS (F/A 18C) have an ICLS system which is like an ILS system but only functions for carriers, not airfields. (Instrument Carrier Landing System I think) I dont know much about the superhornet so take that with a grain of salt
@@handsomechocolatebar276 No "proper" carriers in MSFS yet - we'll see if they add ICLS with it.
Thats all the F18 has. We have no VOR or conventional ILS. No CDI even. All nav is done on the lower screen, and to fly an approach you'd set your course, box TCN (or WYPT for an illegal approach), then in the bottom right it should say your distance from that course line.
Does 'auto' work for waypoints so you don't need to manually increment waypoints?
I think it may have been patched in since this was made, but not sure
What minimum runway length does the F18 require to land?
About 5ft if you put the hook down ;)
Ok so you might not answer this in time but how do I go into reverse or push back I don't know what to call it
Push back is handled by the MSFS ATC
When I click BALT nothing happens. It just flashes the ALT on the button for a split second then disapears. If I click it over and over like a million times ocasionally it will hold. Please help?
Sounds like a manual input is overriding it. Check your hardware joystick isn’t making tiny noisy inputs, increase the dead zone if necessary. Assuming you’re above 400ft :)
While I am using afterburner for a long time, my left engine stops. What do I have to do? And when I get to start the jet by checklist, it can't activate the ATC communication. I play on xbox series s
For the afterburner thing, double check fuel and that you don’t have failures turned on. I’m not sure how well the MSFS checklist system works if you’re getting the AI to run the checklist - I always start the plane myself :)
you ran out of fuel
How can i fly faster? Speeds on aircrafts are slow, passenger planes fly at 200-302 kntts and fighter jets get 500 knotts which is slow for me. Anyway i can go mach 1 or something?
Mach 1 @ 40,000ft is about 400 knots indicated. If you look at the HUD you’ll see the Mach number. Also make sure you’re in afterburner (Shift+F4).
Can someone help me find the altimeter menu or button in the f18? Everytime I get to a high altitude it says I need to change it to a higher one and can't find it lol
Hot keys in this IIRC
my right side panel doesn't work like yours ....how come???? all the buttons say not installed
Sounds like you’re on a weapons screen. Use the soft keys around the screen to change to a different menu
Can't find a way to display that color map with elevation data on main display.
I’m not sure I’ve done it either, but pretty sure the displays are interchangeable
Do I have to punch in coordinates to fly it?
Definitely not. It pulls through your flight plan from the world map.
one thing, you always crank the right engine first bc the main functions or something like that i cant remember exactly depends on your right engine
In DCS yup (and I made a tutorial showing this), but in MSFS it makes no odds 🙂
funny thing too is if you use the autostart the sim always starts the left engine first. in reality if you are going to start both engines it doesnt matter because you will have both engines running anyway, but the right one is usually started first to recharge the apu accumulator which also supplies the emergency brake accumulator with charge.
Does the taxing required a lot of throttle to move this plane? it feels like this plane is super heavy when moving in the ground
Not really. Is the parking brake off?
@@TiJayFLY you are right. My brake was on
Hey! Do you know how I can use the autothrottle in this aircraft?

I can't find where to purchase / download this plane. Am I crazy? I'm using msfs through steam
It’s already in the sim - make sure your sim is up to date and you’ve updated all your Sim content packages in the Marketplace
I’m kind of new and I keep starting on the runway how do I fix it
Select a gate/ramp as your departure point in the world map. It’s the drop-down below the airport name. Note that if you start from a gate/ramp, you’ll need to start the airplane from cold and dark.
Thanks for this tutorial. Would you mind listing your flight plan?
Duxford EGSU - Cardiff EGFF 30 via high altitude airways as assigned by MSFS 👍
@@TiJayFLY Thanks again! I was able to complete the flight. First time in the Hornet! ... because of your help.
How do I disengage autopilot. Every time I take off and taxi I loose control of my rudder and my throttle
That sounds like MSFS “flight assistant”, not autopilot. Turn off all the assistance stuff in options (auto rudder etc). Autopilot disengage key can be mapped in options too, on Xbox its Y by default. Auto throttle disengage can also be mapped, it’s called “autopilot airspeed hold off” in options
Im doing a flight sim on cadets so I'm watching this

Would you happen to know how to manually input a flight plan from within the cockpit, from start to end including a SID & STAR & ILS landing if it supports that?
It is possible in the real plane and DCS - I don’t *think* the MSFS one allows it though
@@TiJayFLY Oh, well that's definitely a shame then if that is the case! I do hope so though as I would enjoy setting it all up manually & being able to make changes on the fly.
@@btm_kiwigaming5449 in the meantime, I believe DCS offers a 30 day free fly on all their addons. You can get a really good F18 experience in there today :)

just a question.. my rudders don't seem to be turning the front wheel.. that means I can turn the plane while it's on the ground. have I accidentally hit a button that stops the front wheel being anything but straight? I can't taxi it anywhere and if I'm not straight while landing it's tricky. any help guys? I know I could turn it before but now it's like this.
In MSFS controls there’s an option to tie rudder to nose wheel steering. I think in Accessibility or Realism settings?
@@TiJayFLY yes it is! Oh my god thanks haha.. i had to set a keybind for it. Silly how it's like this but all good. Thanks man
@@TiJayFLY by the way do you own the eurofighter typhoon? I'm having some problems with that too. Randomly it will lose all power and not throttle up and the afterburners are always blinking. This helped! I wonder how to deploy the speed brake...
Easiest way would be assign a hotkey in control options
The speed brake is called spoiler in MSFS and you can map Extend spoiler and Retract spoiler to a HOTAS switch or separate buttons. There is also a toggle option.
If I remember right, it is on the right side on the right throttle.
I changed the drag of the F18 in the .cfg file, specifically halving it, so that at 50% throttle I achieved 640 TAS kt /1185 km/h/ at 4000 feet altitude near the ground. 3300km range! At 80% thrust TAS 825kt /1525km/h/
easy to do?
@@magzire Yes! Only one data series needs to be changed. If you send me your email address, I will send you the modified flight model file. I'll describe how to replace it, of course before that you have to save the original as a backup. No worries, there will be no problems with the simulator, no errors, no system crashes! This modification only makes a significant difference at lower altitudes, the top speed is unfortunately locked!
However, at low altitudes it will be very easy to fly much faster than the speed of sound, whereas this is not possible with the original setting.

This is an amazing tutorial !
I am having trouble with the plane always pitching on the left for some reason, i can't find out why ! It happens only with the F18.
Do you know why is that maybe ?
MSFS autopilot has loads of weird bugs, try it in clear skies - could just be it can’t handle real world weather too well in certain conditions.
Everytime I land it always turns left or right and is uncontrollable and impossible to taxi, this happens with every single plane and my rudder is also broken after I land and goes all stuttery and twitchy
@@TiJayFLY thank you for your answer ! i'm trying it again in cold and dark mode and see what i got : nothing changed. I played with basic weather, still nothing. If i let go of the yoke, the aircraft automatically falls on the left. Yet I have unabled every assistted piloting command... Very frustrating as i will need to have my hand on the yoke all the time
@@louisduclos3439 ohhh you’re flying manually :) yeah that sounds like a bug with the flight model. The aircraft’s autopilot (the one on the centre MFD) is actually pretty stable though, and does have a heading and roll hold mode so you can use those for stable flight 👍

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, but when I land, I’m either way too fast or too slow and I stall...and it seems to take the entire runway to slow down...my brakes seem useless...
Minimum approach speed with flaps in this seems to be 160, it just falls out of the sky below that (as it doesn’t have a spoiler). I haven’t had an issue with brakes - make sure your controls are setup so the brakes are constantly being applied when you hold down the button, not toggling on/off. Also make sure your auto throttle is off and your throttle is idle when touching down.
@@TiJayFLY thanks- I’ll check the brake settings👍

Likely causes 2mins in to this video ruclips.net/video/-ivz3PapuDI/видео.html
I figured it out
When performing Nesterov's loop, the position of the flaps is changed at the airplane. What is the reason for this?
Flaps are set to auto by default and MSFS logic isn’t bulletproof
The F18 flaps move a lot while flying. That is why it is called 'auto' and not 'up.'
When I try to turn when I'm taxiing it doesn't turn why is that?

That isn’t something I’ve come across so far - you are definitely referring to the MSFS Hornet not the DCS version, right?
can i manually add waypoint on this f18 ???
I think only IRL and in DCS
I can’t seem to click the buttons inside the super hornet and quick start/shutdown. Any tips?
If the cursor has disappeared (it’s a common bug), go to external view and back in. If this is the first start of the sim after the update, I’d restart the sim and PC/console to check it’s not some input device oddity.
I’m also not sure the quick start and shutdown functions actually work with this plane - lots of people had issues with that, seems like a bug. 👍
It’s also worth noting that I use the “legacy” input mode - you can switch this on in Accessibility options. I think if you use the new “lock” input mode, some buttons may be scroll wheel driven instead of click driven.

Edit: Quick video guide for engine shut down here ruclips.net/video/t0QCGnNpGVI/видео.html
Why is the top speed about 670 kts with afterburners when the real f18 is almost double that?
