  • In this video, Jo Ann shows an early 80's vintage B-model OS autoharp that she converted to single-key diatonic in the key of G. Using open-noting techniques and non-standard chords, she gives and example of how she develops her instrumental autoharp pieces -- in this case, a pretty song from the Disney Animated Movie "Pocahontas" (Color of the Wind).

    Hi Jo Ann , Thank you for your reply and advice . I checked those Guys out you mentioned and they’re certainly at the top of their game, they produce beautiful instruments. Unfortunately living here in the U.K. makes it too expensive to buy from the U.S. . Kind regards , Bill . Please give your little doggy a hug for me , he’s so sweet .

    The music is lovely, and I’m in absolute awe of the amazing restoration you did. To play such music on an instrument that you have restored makes it all the more beautiful.

    Hi Jo Ann , lve watched this video many times and really enjoy it . Would you be kind enough to answer me a question please . I have the opportunity to buy a used Autoharp from eBay , it only has 12 chords, do you think this would be o.k. for a beginner ?. Also can extra chords be added ? . Kind regards, Bill .

    • @autoharpist
      @autoharpist  Год назад

      Hi, Bill. The short answer is “No”. The longer answer is that a manufactured autoharp (Oscar Schmidt, ChromaHarp, etc.) will require a minimum of $200 to make it truly playable, even if it is brand new. Buying one that’s used is very risky, particularly at auction where you cannot get a really good look at it. There are so many things that could be wrong with it that an untrained eye would miss. Finally, I never recommend getting an autoharp with the chord bar buttons in two rows. Three rows of buttons is vastly superior, which means a 21-chord model. My best advice would be to contact an autoharp luthier such as Greg Schreiber or Pete Daigle (just Google their name plus the word ‘autoharp’ and you’ll find them). They sell Oscar Schmidt autoharps that they personally inspect and ‘optimize’ so they are truly playable right from the start.

    Love the black! Where did you find the used chord bars? I’m thinking I might do this with my chromatic. Thanks!

    • @autoharpist
      @autoharpist  3 года назад

      It's actually a very dark brown. But black is an excellent choice as well. I used a matte finish paint rather than the high gloss. It just works better from the standpoint of something that will be handled a lot. If it's shiny you'll always be chasing fingerprints! ;) As far as the chord bars are concerned, almost any luthier who makes custom autoharps will sell chord bar sets. Tom Fladmark fladmarkautoharps.com Greg Schreiber schreiberautoharps.com , John Hollandsworth blueridgeautoharps.com and Ken Ellis whippoorwillacoustics.com all sell chord bar sets that can be used to upgrade a manufactured 'harp, like the Oscar Schmidts. It's one of the best ways to improve the playability of a manufactured instrument.

    Hello, I've really been enjoying your uploads. I have an auto harp myself and i can strum out a song roughly. I use easy guitar tabs to learn but is there specific sheet music for auto harps?

      Да, автоарфа похожа на псалтирь. Автоарфа по сути является цитрой с добавлением аккордовых полос.
