In his interview with Drumeo, he states that he takes some inspiration from gospel music. So that insight was actually spot on. Definitely recommend the interview, it was really well done.
The drumming in Jaws completely blows my mind. Been playing 3 years, started at 55, and this guy is clearly something very special. The whole band really works so well. Some of the best proper musicians out there.
He has a full one hour plus long session recorded with drumeo where he talks about his influences and plays a bunch of songs, you should really check out the Alkaline recording on this one. The grooves, fills, cymbal catches and everything else are just out of this world. Quite honestly the best drumming I've ever seen in my life
To me it was Higer the part blew me out 🤣 in the studio version i didn’t realised he was playing the toms “borders” (sorry i forgot the English name at moment) To me he the most inspirational modern drummer ever
The thing I adore about II is the fact that he doesn't play the drums exactly the same as the studio version and experiments/changes things up depending on how he's feeling that night 🔥🔥🔥🔥 he's amazing
Gavin Harrison in an interview stated the same thing. He also said his live performances vary which is why he doesn't like those in the audience air-drumming. lol
@@clckhere878 No they don't, and it's usually a sign they don't know how to notate or remember what they played. Accurate drummers will always stick to a variation of what they did originally. So happy to see you geeking out to a band that holds a special place in my heart. II is a monster on the kit, and the way he brings some gospel elements to the metal drumming gives it a really unique sound!
Totally agree. I'm a hip hop head but cannot stop listening to sleep token. IIs drumming hooked me and as it's so complex I get something new each time I listen to their catalogue
II is so insanely talented. Such a graceful and fluid drummer. Everything just flows together and he has such a HEAVY fucking groovy feel to his playing
Gospel Grooves, Deep Enigmatic Metal, Spiritual and Emotional Music. The lore of the band is much deeper (to people who read into them) and sometimes simply beautiful music with a message. Glad to see you digging them as well.
Thank you for mentioning the gospel that is SO CLEAR in their music! Everyone else is like, "I don't know what that sound is....JAZZ?!!!??" Nope. It's clearly gospel and is also very evident in Vessel's voice and piano when he does live versions of "Give" and "Sugar" when it's just him and the piano. It's so haunting and beautiful when he throws those riffs in there. Brilliant!
Animals As Leaders are a big inspiration for the guys in this band. II is the vocalists writing partner, so stands to reason it translates into their craft. Otherwise members have all played in alt metal bands, punk bands, and even singer/songwriter acoustic groups. There is also high level classical piano training behind a lot of the basis for the songwriting.
What’s funny is I saw someone try to drag vessel by saying “they’re trying way too hard to be progressive” … soo wrong; I think knowing his background he’s probably trying way too hard to NOT be totally progressive 😅 if anything trying hard to be more pop?
ALL of their music is like this! The offering from drumeo is amazing. You gotta watch it. If nothing more than for inspiration, if you like this, you will love it. Thank you for everything you have done for the drumming community. You really are an inspiration. When I am having a tough time getting motivated to practice, I turn your videos on and without fail, I find myself on the kit with a smile grinding away. Youre the man.
I'd love to see you watch this. "Dan Presland (Ne Obliviscaris) And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope studio play through" It's got Gypsy violin, multiple times changes and styles, many very fast metal parts and a 12/8 blast to top it off.
Saw this band live twice in the last year, loved it so much. The first time i was totally caught off guard by the drum solo on the summoning, the second time I was ready and tried to pay better attention. II is legendary
Stumbled in the last fall upon "the summoning" and was completely blown away. Bought the album and heard it a lot since then. Love the drummer! So good, so tasty! Would love to hear your version of this. But I also think, that you would dig 'Chokehold' from the same album. Might be an easier start into the world of Sleep Token.
Will has also stated he doesn’t even listen to metal/heavy music anymore. He tries to be completely influenced by his own style when creating and not by external influences.
Wills covers of Sleep Token are - in my opinion- the best at showing his range and how dynamic his vocals can be. I dig the instrumental of LS, but have a hard time get getting behind the vocal sounds. I want to, but they just don't float my boat

there’s a whole one hour drumeo video with ii, the only spoken interview any of the band members have ever given, mentions his inspirations and influences as well as showing off his skills and more of sleep token’s songs. you’ll love it!

I legit can't listen to the original without drum solo ever sine II flexed it on drumeo, love how much your appreciate artists in these reviews man. As I lay dying - 94 hours cover
Metal with musicality. Man, you've got to listen to more prog. Haken, Leprous, Caligula's Horse... amazing metal moments, incredible melodies and harmonies.
Love this video! My request for your next video would be anything by Sikth.. maybe a track such as 'Wait for something wild', 'Scent of the Obscene', 'Skies of Millennium Night', 'Bland Street Bloom' or even 'Pussyfoot'
I can't help but think this too. Yes, completely different kit setup but wouldn't you want to do that to throw people off? Not saying II is Delta Empire but...🤷🏼♂
No. You can find who it is really easily. All of the members are from very small or obscure projects. I also won't help you with the name out of respect for their anonymity.
The thing I appreciate the most about this is it’s all in 4/4. For anyone wondering. But the over the bar line/metric modulation all over this makes it sound so sick.
I saw them live like a month or so ago in Sydney. 2 things I didnt like about it: 1. Too short, they were opening for Bring Me The Horizon but I went for Sleep Token 2. So many lights on II during drum solo, really hard to see anything. Besides that, Awsome show, awsome band. Would go again but when they are headlining next time :)
Definitely you have to check the "an offering from II" videos. It's a couple of song with the drums play through without the vocals, II is mesmerizing. The influences are from Deftones to Tool to Gospel RnB Trap. Vessel I and II are the geniuses behind it. I'm super stocked to have know them. Definitely well deserved all the success they are getting imo.
Beautiful to see you analyze Sleep Token's 2!!!!! Great comments, If you are interested in checking more of Sleep token you should check "Higher", II said that it is one of his favorites
Check out the Drumeo special with him. It is the best 45-60 minutes of drumming I’ve ever heard. He talks about his influences and styles he enjoys. Truly a master class of using acoustic drums alongside a few digital bars and a 12 pad thingy. Super innovative.
Love the feedback from the perspective of an amazing drummer as yourself. It has helped me (as a non drummer) really hear a different dynamic from this song!
You should listen to the band ISSUES from Atlanta. They are the band that introduced Sleep Token to the US scene when Sleep Token (along with Polyphia) opened for ISSUES in their US tour back in 2019. They drummer Josh Manuel is insane and he also has his own YT channel. He now drums for the band Bilmuri and is the drummer for Kane Brown.
Serj??? You've outdone it in that one El Estepario. Long time viewer, keep up the great work. Also amazing to see you discover Sleep Token, what an amazing bang, worship. 🤘🤘 (edit) Yes, the drum solo should indeed be on the record 🤤
II mentioned in his Drumeo interview that he has a lot of gospel influence in his drumming. I love the orchestration with his cymbals as well as hi tone. The way his drums sound to me is just perfection.
The best advice I got for counting this song is just to treat it as a straight 4/4 173 BPM track. It's kind of awkward at first because of the snare and crash placements, plus it even drops from half time to "quarter time" in the outro, but with some practice it feels very natural
The intro is a 6 6 4 pattern then it goes into like a 6 5 4 then for the break down it goes in to 4 then back to the 6 6 4. It’s like a math problem. I love this band though and I’m so happy you checked them out!
dude, you gotta check out Charlie Thorpe from Malevolence, the way he plays works so well with the rest of the band, and his fills are amazing, also clearly loves exploring the symbols.
Two of my faves converging. Has Christmas come early?!? All kidding aside, super stoked you've found them and look forward to much more in terms of review and covers. Cheers mate!
ii is the most tastefully busy drummer I’ve ever heard. Accents and fills are constant and complex, but every hit is exactly where it needs to be. Dude is leaps and bounds above everyone else in the game.
I got on the Sleep Token train late myself. They blew me away, especially II. My personal favorite is Hypnosis. His cymbal play during the verse is amazing. Check it out!
Thanks for the review! Sometimes it’s hard to appreciate all the drum parts when the whole is just so incredibly talented. II is definitely a key component. It’s like he uses drums like a language.
Yes please! Do play this! I just commented thi son the Portnoy video playing Tool's Pneuma, but if you could squeeze that in too! Great to hear your analysis too. As someone who gets so many reaction videos madde about him, it is great to hear your positive voice in the mix. To my eas, the gospel sound is like how Massive Attack, Moby or Portishead would use gospel chops, but with oraganics thrown in.
I got turned onto Sleep Token about a month ago. They are the best band on the planet right now IMHO. The lyrics really speak to me & the eclectic mix of style captivated & moves me. Can’t wait until they tour the states again, I’ll pay over $300 a ticket, I don’t care’
7:50 I watched a yt video of the FOH engineer (Thom Pike? I know his first name is Thom). He said he has a Tom Bomb on his foh board that he can manually add. I just got in to this band about 6 months ago too after hearing their name for years. They instantly became one of my all time favorites. I’ve tried to write music similar to this for years. It’s so amazing.
Estoy completamente enganchado a esta banda, hacia mucho que no escuchaba tanta calidad en una composición rítmica con permiso del próximo álbum the dream theater de nuevo con el Sr.Portnoy

55 insane. I started at 32 and felt like I was too late to start. Love it.

I'd love to see more sleep token stuff on the channel! Reactions like this, covers, the whole thing!
I got turned onto Sleep Token about a month ago. They are the best band on the planet right now IMHO. The lyrics really speak to me & the eclectic mix of style captivated & moves me. Can’t wait until they tour the states again, I’ll pay over $300 a ticket, I don’t care’
I love how excited you get from my favourite drummer/band!❤
7:50 I watched a yt video of the FOH engineer (Thom Pike? I know his first name is Thom). He said he has a Tom Bomb on his foh board that he can manually add.
I just got in to this band about 6 months ago too after hearing their name for years. They instantly became one of my all time favorites. I’ve tried to write music similar to this for years. It’s so amazing.
“It’s like he’s painting”. I absolutely love the gracefulness in II’s cymbal strokes.
Also in terms of the depth of the drums in the mix, their front of house sound guy is a drummer so he’s making sure that sound is front and centre!!
Wild how diverse the styles are. At 12:43 it's like some Dave Matthew's Band dealio. Just all over the place.
Estoy completamente enganchado a esta banda, hacia mucho que no escuchaba tanta calidad en una composición rítmica con permiso del próximo álbum the dream theater de nuevo con el Sr.Portnoy
I remember seeing them live not long after this song came out, the solo was just the icing on the cake! 🤌 such a great drummer!
definitely check out more of their music, they have a ton of masterpieces. 2's Drumeo interview is also a great watch
