My First EVER Solo Wild Camp - Wild Camping Alone in the Woods

  • This was my first ever wild camp! It was also my first solo wild camp. I camped alone in the woods, staying fairly local to ease myself in for my first one. It's something I've wanted to do for quite some time, but I was feeling quite apprehensive about it so was hoping to do it with someone (but no one wanted to!).
    Tired of waiting, one weekday I decided to just bite the bullet and head out alone and face my fears. I'm so glad I did! Here's what happened...

    Solo camping, especially dispersed camping always brings the anxiety. I’m a 6’2 Ex-military guy and even I got the willies 👻 I think this feeling is natural. It's good to get out of our comfort zone. It’s the only way to experience new things. I really enjoyed your video Chloe especially "Beautiful evening light in the forest". That was pure poetry 😇

      It's very reassuring to hear I am not alone! Totally agree on your point of getting outside of our comfort zones - it's something I really try to do, and doing this one camp has opened up a whole new world for me, so it definitely worked! Thank you for stopping by Steven :) (and let me know if you have any success with the bow-drill!)

    Hey Chloe. Great video and fair play for the solo camp. I’m trying to be a big brave boy and go for my first solo camp. I have done lots of wild camping with friends but never on my own but I think it will be a whole new experience to go alone. As a 40+ year old man I have no excuses and will use your video as motivation to just go and do it and stop making excuses! All the best.

      Hey Andy, thanks for taking the time to watch and chat.... my feelings and experiences before this camp so strongly mirror your own! It definitely is a whole new experience. I found it more vulnerable and uncomfortable... but also a lot more freeing and rewarding. It's rare that we have time to spend alone with just ourselves, especially in nature when there are so few distractions. Solo camping isn't for everyone and I really like camping with others still, but I just felt like I had to give it a try and see what I thought of it for myself. I also tried making every excuse under the sun! Eventually, I just ran out of them so had to go 😂 If you do end up doing one, please let me know, I'd love to know how it goes!

    Well done!
    I completed my first long distance route (The Clyde Walkway) quite recently and felt pretty much all of the things you did doing my first wild camp. Woke up quite a few times and felt like it took ages to get back to sleep but felt refreshed in the morning. It did catch up with me later that day though, especially as I had another 18km to go to get to the end of the trail!
    I was more nervous about people seeing where I pitched up and trying to move me on, but that's (usually!) less of an issue here in Scotland as our laws are very different about roaming rights and wild camping.

    • @ChloeRoseHarrison
      @ChloeRoseHarrison  Год назад +3

      Thank you so much!
      It is really lovely to here that we had similar experiences...a nice bit of camaraderie there for me! I was going to say... it caught up with me and all I had was a 5k walk back home and a quiet work day from my bedroom, not 18k of a hike!
      Massive props to you for completing the trail and having your first wild camp while on the route... you certainly jumped in more than I did. I think I would have been nervous about exactly the same thing in your situation, but as you say, Scotland is a lot friendlier to wild campers!
      Thanks for taking the time to share your story, it was really great to hear from you.

    Watched your fantastic video from start to finish, bravo and congratulations on reaching this milestone. All the way through watching, anytime you were feeling that bit of anxiety and reassuring yourself I was saying it with you, "you'll be fine" and you were.
    I did my first solo back in May (I'm from Lancashire so that's where I camp) and since I've done that first one I can't get enough of them. Camped a few times in the lakes on my own as well. In fact I've reached a point where I enjoy going out so much on my own for my own personal time to recharge.. I'm actually quite reluctant to let other people come with me now.
    Again well done and keep the videos coming.

I also can't get enough, and although lots of my camps feature other people, I am actually normally more of a lone wolf. It's exactly as you say - time to recharge. And I feel like I connect a lot more with my environment and 'the moment' without others around, no matter how good company they are. Really lovely to have you here! All the best :)

    Hey Chloe, congradulations on facing your fears! I remember my first wild camp. I can identify with your apprehension and fears. The first night is really hard. In the dead of night, the sounds of the wild are so much louder than anyone can ever imagine. It can be unnerving. Even now, if I havn't gone out in a while, the first night out can still bring back those feelings. Now I carry ear plugs with me. I sleep like a baby in the wild with them. If I can't hear it, then it doesn't exist (in my mind). Hahaha. I just subscribed to your channel! I am always looking for inspiration. I just started my channel recently. Let’s stay connected!

    • @ChloeRoseHarrison

      Thank you Peter! It's definitely the sounds that kept my mind most alert, your reflections on them are so true. I think I'm going to have to get myself some ear plugs, that is a great idea. It's like the phrase ' what you don't know can't hurt you'! I reckon ear plugs would do the same for me as they do for you. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and sub (and welcome to YT too, it's really nice to be surrounded by people at the start of their YT journey like I am!).

    Ohh Chloe! I have a big smile on my face after watching this! First off; I know you say that it was quite alright to do this and that it wasn't as scary as your imagination perhaps though before it went dark but still I feel a huge admiration for you for doing this. Probably because my imagination goes wild as soon as I walk into the forest (yes, even in daylight ) and I'm 24 and still kind of afraid of the dark hahaha so to see you do this was truly an inspiration! ''A little bit of bread and no cheese'' I'll definitely remember that one. I love how you know so much about all the creatures and animals out there, and how you share their names and your knowledge with us. Those sheep, my goodness, I laughed aloud!! Sorry about your sleep but they were hilarious!! Wonderful video, I really enjoyed joining you on this solo wild camp. Who knows, maybe I'll find the courage to do this myself sometime thanks to you :)

    • @ChloeRoseHarrison
      @ChloeRoseHarrison  Год назад +1

      I am also 24 and know the fear of the unknown that the dark holds all too well Frederike, so we share that much in common! I have to say my mind was a lot calmer when camping than it has ever been just going for a walk in the woods...perhaps when stuck in a situation where it wouldn't be ideal to be scared our minds just suck it up!?! The yellowhammer is such a nice little call to learn (finally a bird that is distinctive and a little easier to learn!). The sheep cracked me up when editing and watching this back too don't worry... I was so innocent to it all and first and it quickly lost its novely 😂 If a wild camp is something you want to do, I would really encourage you to! It was watching other videos on RUclips that really inspired me to get out and do it... it would be amazing if I could pass on the gesture!

    Hi Chloe. Well done ! Perfectly natural to have what I call 'The fear'. I get it before every walk or trip. I remember overcoming it to bivvy on top of Helvellyn in the Lake District around my 40th birthday. Strange to be up there as it got dark. Sheep aren't sheep after dark - they're crouching demons. Never slept a wink - just watched the stars & the odd strange light in the sky. At one point I saw 3 head torches approaching & it was people on a night navigation exercise - they never knew I was there. Sunrise over Ullswater was magnificent, the early rays turning all the rocks & crags a lovely shade of pink. So well done mate ! You must try it in the mountains too ! xx

    • @ChloeRoseHarrison
      @ChloeRoseHarrison  2 года назад

      Oh wow Michael, that must have been an incredible adventure, even if you didn't sleep! I love the idea of just watching the stars, so simple and peaceful. Your description of sheep after dark cracked me up 😂 I honestly had an image of them being all sweet and innocent - that is shattered forever! They made such unearthly sounds at times. And thank you! The mountains are definitely the place I want to camp the most...I'll make it happen this year for sure!

    Great video. Pleased to discover this channel, subscribed! Like you, I wanted to wild camp for ages and only started this year, doing my first solo one a couple of weeks ago which is my most recent video (though I cheated and took the dog!). It was on the coast near Cuckmere Haven which is a gorgeous spot - I must admit I think I'd be too scared in woods so kudos to you for doing it - I probably need to get over it as woods are a good place to hide if you live in the southeast as we are. I know what you mean about your mind trying to make you alert - unfortunately mine succeeds and I barely get any sleep which is the only thing that stops me doing this on a weeknight.

    • @ChloeRoseHarrison
      @ChloeRoseHarrison  Год назад +1

      Hi Laura, thank you so much, it's lovely to have you here! I don't think taking the dog was cheating at all! There is still a lot of nerves and uncertainly around doing it, and I would have taken my dog on my first camp too if I could have 😂 It's so wonderful to hear another woman's story - you don't often hear about other females doing solo wild camps which I think played into my fears a little. I only went in the woods as like you say, they're a good place to hide down here. It can be really hard to find secluded spots I've found (in my very limited experience!). It's so hard to turn off that alert switch, isn't it. Survival instincts kicking in... I wonder if with time we can train ourselves to dial it down a little? I'd like to think so!

      Hello, thank you so much for stopping by! This was so lovely to read. No, I have not seen/heard of many females doing wild camping... I think that was a large part of the reason why it's taken me so long to do one, despite like you having been desperate to do one for ages. If you ever find a place where you think you might feel safe and comfortable to give it a go, I really recommend it! But if not, I don't think that's 'not brave'. At the end of the day, it is whatever you are comfortable with and enjoy... and little day camps sound more than wonderful enough.

      @@ChloeRoseHarrison Most people feel uncomfortable talking on air, even through a phone / camera. I hosted live 2 hr radio shows 3 nights a week for years, and experienced the changes that take place when people live their lives on air. You speak with the audience like an old friend, eager to share something new ... and this shows very well on camera. Stay you. Don't get famous. Famous people get annoying, quickly, and we're all sick to death of self-inflicted celebrity bullshit being injected into culture under the guise of social media. (I'm looking at you, Russell Brand)

Everyone is so friendly here it really does feel like I am talking to friends, so I pretend you are there right on the other side of the camera and that makes it a lot easier for me to talk to what is otherwise quite an unnatural medium! Glad you got your first wild camp in and it went well. Looks like you found the right spot , an area you are familiar with. My first one was stybarrow Dodd in the lakes and I had walked it a few times before so I knew how tough the walk was and that it had plenty of places to pitch. just a shame I took far too much with me🤣

Since this first one, I've ended up camping most weeks, and seen more places in half a year than I have across many years, so it's definitely helping! Great advice Roy, I definitely want to get myself a bivvy bag. I've actually tried a couple (literally just two haha) of camps just with a tarp and sleeping bag, and as you mention - it was so wonderful to feel so close to nature. I definitely need to get a bivvy bag to do it again though - anything other than the perfect warm/no bug conditions I had before might punish me if not!
