My first time solo wild camping in the Peak District | Hannah Morris

  • Wild camping in the fells of the Peak District is something I’ve always wanted to do and a solo wild camp has always been on my list- I just didn’t realise I’d be doing them together.
I recently headed into the Peak District for my first solo wild camp. I chose the Edale valley to pitch up for my first camp. I was pretty nervous but I’m so glad I did It. I woke to a somewhat cloudy view from atop of Grindslow Knoll on Sunday and made my way down early as the sun burnt through, happy as a clam and so amped to have pushed through some fear and doubt. I’m definitely considering investing in a ‘real’ tent now for some more camping adventures.

I stopped halfway through to comment after your question about bailing out.
I'm a 53 year old big lad who fancies wild camping, however I'm getting muddled up in the details and have yet to camp. I'm going to restart the video now as I'm sure you'll show me the way...
Some time later... Turns out you nailed it, I'm inspired to do it myself!

Haha similar here just a bit older. I know what you mean about being bogged down by the details. Down or synthetic sleeping bag is a 40 litre rucksack too small a 60 too big. A small tent or a hooped bivvy. I do a lot of hiking in Kent with my large dog and want to give wild camping a try. I think I’ve settled on a OEX Phoxx 1 and a 44 litre rucksack and synthetic sleeping bag.

This is so inspiring! I am working towards doing something like this. I think my first solo camp will be at a campsite to get over the first hurdle of being alone. But your video has inspired me to want to push myself more. Thank you for sharing xx

Great video. Showing your own struggle with your fears was a nice inclusion, amongst so many that show an "airbrushed" version of things. Sad that we live in a land that is all owned by a tiny few, who have effectively made camping, especially in any comfort, illegal. We have all been so cowed, and have accepted the theft of what is ours by right. When the law is immoral, it is moral to break it.

Calling for government backed land redistribution shouldn't be a controversial opinion. We live in a country where the 0.001% own as much land as the bottom 50%.

Sweet video. I like your shy/nervous demeanour, idk why. I was skeptical of your fishing shelter thing until you showed it, and actually it's ok, it is just like a tent. It's just single layer (cold) and I don't see any guy-ropes (wind could take it) but it looks like your survived.
Still making videos Ever camped Dartmoor? Or done any other wildcamps after this?

That feeling is definitely not silly. I've been camping and night fishing a lot since a kid with mates. It was a few years ago while doing this, what I loved, when the 1st panic attack struck at night and lasted 4 hours! It was awful and totally irrational. I'm 37 and only now getting back out, on my own, out in the sticks, and facing it head on.
Great video, and well done for doing it 🙂

Hello. Just be proud of yourself what you have done for the first time was amazing. Once you have done one or two more you will be more confident. I know how it is for the first time wild camping and i felt safer in a forest with a self built shelter. I am wanting it to Snow this year so i can wild camp in a forest near to me. It will be new but i am looking forward to it Regards Mick from Hampshire xx

First time I was gonna wild camp was on the Isle of Arran on Goatfell which was pretty stupid as only had a £40 tent, onlysuitable for campsites really. Camped at the campiste instead due to fog. Since then have bought 9 tents, 8 of them being mountain 4 season tents.
At a later date, came accros a couple of Canadians in the hills in summer that were lost, they only had a small road map of the UK with them. They were surprised that scotland was not covered in snow. They asked me where the nearest village was so I led them to it. When we got there they started setting up a cheap campsite tent. When I asked them why they were not going down into the village , they said that they had no money. I then asked them how they got here; they said that they hitch hiked.
Now if Scotland had been full of snow, their cheap campsite tent would have be useless, and being lost , I hate to think of what would have happened to them.
Another time, came back from Fort William with another canadian who had been up Ben nevis, she had broken her ankle as went up Ben Nevis in a pair of trainers.

There is definitely something to be said for facing the fear of the unknown. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and struggle with deciding to do it after all. Think back to your first wall climb, or first outdoor session, you were probably facing the same fear, especially with social anxiety. Glad to have found someone who has similar thinking to relate to. Part of my problem is trying to always be prepared for the worst case scenario. Could you share more of your planning process?

That's a nasty burn! Impressed at the bravery to camp in a fishing shelter. I would be nervous unless the forecast was dry but that's because I've experienced the joys of wild camping in a leaky tent before.
I'm pretty cold tolerant but a whole night huddled together for warmth trying to avoid the puddles in the tent and waiting for morning is a memory that'll be with me for life.

    • @thenayancat8802

Ah I didn't realise it actually closes. I thought it was always open on the side and I was thinking you were a bloody loon lol. Yeah definitely sensible especially with the warm weather down south (I've been camping in the Scottish highlands recently)

Haha I am a bit of a loon but not that much of a loon! Your tent experience definitely sounds memorable! Thankfully it was pretty dry that night or I might have been it trouble.

Got to start somewhere as a wild camper for many years since my teens and now sixty. Compared to my wild camps in deserts and jungles around the world the UK wild camping experience is not dangerous or scary, it is absolute peace compared to city centres after throwing out times at weekends. The only danger is allowing your mind and its imaginatkion to take control.
