Introduction To Our Two Story Barn And AirBnB Ep. 1 | Off-Grid Mountainside BarnBuild

It was time to introduce our Barn Build, AirBnB and living space. The idea first came up for us to build a sheep barn, but with all building projects, they just get bigger and bigger. Our BarnBuild project is a two story building with the animal barn below the living space. This is how homes of the past were kept warm. The animals lived below and the humans above.
We've been working on this project for over a year, it started with excavating when we leveled land for our high tunnel in mid-2020. There is an 4ft elevation change between the upper and lower section of the 32x28 barn which had to be dug out, fitted for footers and calculate the retaining walls.
In this video, we'll go over some of the plans we needed to began this large project and how we are dealing with building on a hillside. Come follow our journey building a post-framed first floor and advanced framed second floor with an AirBnB space, wool studio and more.
Utilizing advanced framing techniques, building science and a limited budget, we set out to build an affordable living quarters/workspace above an animal barn. We want the building to reflect our existing home's modified Saltbox shape, but of course with our own design and eye for clean lines, functional features while utilize resources our Appalachia homestead provides us.
You'll find this in the beams and columns from Poplar and Black Locust felled at the building site, to locally sawn Hemlock for traditional board and batten siding site finished using the Japanese wood treatment Yakisuki (aka Shou Sugi Ban).

Nominal 8x16 Actual in mm: 194.675 x 398.145. I'd guess they would be 400x195x195 mm
