@Donald Grow Name one that comes close to this guy...none and I say no freaking one matches him in terms of playing, detail to attention or even the choice of songs...and more often I just come on this channel to listen to his demos...they r so well played and r so close to the original...there might b a few guys that r good but nobody holds a candle to this guy...be it Marty, Justin, Carl Brown or anyone else Edit: Not so close to the original...they r exactly like the original. If you didn't know they were demos you'd think they r the real ones.
Yeah definitely the best teacher. There a a handful of different guys I watch but this guy gets it spot on all the time, and he goes in to so much detail about it and plays each one so good and the sound is always spot on. The others are good but he always nails it.
Another awesome lesson; Tom would be proud. Your attention to detail is second to none. I get more from your videos by your master technique than I do the actual chords. Telling viewers to 'make sure those notes during the transitions ring clear' is what really sets you apart from the rest. Thanks again!
Best lessons out there, the guy has an ear and takes the time to recreate and then teach the nuances. It’s all about the details. This guy nails it every time
My daddy still owns the LP "into the great white open". I made a copy on tape in 1991 and had this cassette in my first car as long I had that car. Beautiful summer day memory's coming up right now. Didn't played guitar those days...but now, and it's so easy....Thanks a lot .
Man finally somebody shows how to actually play the electric guitar parts! Thanks so much!!! Btw, what tone settings/effects do you use for the electric guitar parts?
Thanks for this. I have been thinking a lot about Tom Petty this week and remembering all the great tunes he has written over the years and all the good times we have had listening to his music. One of my favourites is "Into the great wide open" Such a good songwriter, he will be missed!
This is by far the best guitar channel on RUclips. Right tone/feel/dynamics no matter the original style and artist. My hats off to you Sir.!!! I’d like to see I Need You-Lynyrd Skynyrd or Rememberin ’ Stevie-Buddy Guy. Again.. thank you for the talent , time and effort you put into your videos.
Absolutely love these lessons! However... I always crack up when he talks in the beginning and strums around. It's like it's two completely separate people interupting each other LOL. Keep it up and thanks.
Wasn't particularly into Tom Petty so big thanks for this eye opener ! Usual first rate description of a superb sound and example of simple chord/ riffs that grab you. Thanks again ..you have a great site, and a warm way of teaching much appreciated...
amazing as usual man you nailed the tone and your videos are by far the best most informative and insightful of any guitar instructional videos - and im a guitar teacher. cheers!
Thanks @jacksoncrate. I put a huge amount of time and effort into making these videos. I like to keep them free for those that can't afford it, but if you can, please support what I do. Cheers, Andy www.shutupandplay.ca/donate.html
Thank you for this wonderful video and for cover this most amazingly talented human being I'm huge fan of Tom's work and I'm crushed by this loss. I would truly love some more Tom Petty instructional videos!
02:57 there's so many guitars on this record it's almost you know it's Jeff Lynne producing it and it's probably just like a TW thing.. remember when there would be like five or six of them all strumming together.
Great lesson, thanks very much. Could you do a few more by Tom Petty, including "Swingin", "Last dance with Mary Jane" , and "Free falling" in particular?
Brilliant as always. Weirdly you do it differently than all the other lessons I watched. I say it's weird cause this tune just isn't they complicated. Then again, with so many guitar layers I suppose there's room for interpretation. Slide may not be your thing but you nailed the tone and it sounds damn good to me. Cheers!!
Thanks for the video. A lot of people sure did like Tom. When I first had my driver's license, I wore out damn the torpedoes cassette tape. Thanks again.
Thanks for helping my get it perfect! You play the song so good! If you don't mind, can you tell me what would be a good pedal to get that sound. Thanks man!
What you're saying is exactly true. Great guitar players and singers are a dime a dozen, but great songwriters are one in ten million.... TP was one of those. It's true what they say though, he'll live on through the great music he left behind. Cheers Andy
THIS IS SO AWESOME!!! for those of us not cool enough to own electric guitars, have you got any recommendations of what to do in place of the slider riff on an acoustic? i can't even reach the 17th fret on my guitar
My guess at effects: Reverb, slap delay, chorus and slow tremolo on the rhythm part and single note rhythm parts. On the slide, sounds like delay with tempo set about to quarter notes and 4-6 repeats. Some drive and Reverb. I haven’t tried it yet, it’s just what I think I hear. Maybe compression too on one or both. If the author wanted to share more species than the general “gear” page, I’m sure every viewer would appreciate it. In lieu of that, what do you all hear?
For more information on this lesson go here: www.shutupandplay.ca/learning-to-fly--rhythm--solo.html
Great lessons! You should dissect Mary Jane's last dance for us. I feel like the guitars are panned pretty hard left and right
This guy is the best guitar teacher on youtube.... and I teach guitar for a living.

I agree been following different tutorials for years and this guy is the only one who captures the feel and nuances of songs.

Totally agree with that!

Hearing this brings tears to my eyes. Can't believe he's gone. I will learn this. THX

Thanks for the great lesson! Nice to see someone breaking down individual parts and not just generic chord strumming!
Phenomenal job teaching this, the dark background makes the detail of your hands super easy to follow on the fretboard. Great lesson, thank you!
Finally, someone playing it the right way. Thank you!

Great Guitar work on this. Going over all the parts, plain and simple. I really like this guy. And I love RUclips
What a fun song to play. Couldn't put my guitar down all day yesterday. Even muted the Cubs game. Thanks Andy!
Marie Robinson that's awesome. I friggin love that song too! So sad about Tom!! Have fun playing Learning to fly!!
Been playing for yrs...super easy song but a lot of the time Les is more.....
Love your playing and teaching style. Thank you. Would love to see a tutorial on Strangered in the Night. Love that tune. Thanks!

Your timing couldn't be better. Awesome lesson as always! Maybe some more Petty lessons as a tribute to one of the greatest musicians ever.
Thank you very much. Much appreciated, great lesson. God bless you.
best tutorial on the song i have found on YT
Respect your slide playing, and your lesson(s).
Great lesson! One thing I also tried was tuning electric guitar b string up to c. Sounds really cool for this song also makes slide solo easier!
Thank you for this wonderful video and for cover this most amazingly talented human being I'm huge fan of Tom's work and I'm crushed by this loss. I would truly love some more Tom Petty instructional videos!
Thank you brother! Learning it for band, helped alot! Your actually really good at slide! Great intonation! God Bless you! Rob Ransom
Thank you very much, for this very good lesson.
Great job. As always, you make it so easy to learn. Thanks man.
you are a GREAT teacher! not too slow as to bore us mediocres, but not too fast either... slide sounds awesome BTW...
Enjoying every lesson you put out!

Thanks for your excellent tutorials. I'm in UK and just made a donation. I hope it goes through as the currency on the donations page was in US$
I really like your lessons. Thank you very much.
Excelente tutorial!!!
Muchas gracias y saludos desde Argentina 🇦🇷
This is really good, I have the hardest time with "simple songs" You broke this down real good, thanks.
Great lesson, thanks very much. Could you do a few more by Tom Petty, including "Swingin", "Last dance with Mary Jane" , and "Free falling" in particular?

Thanks for the great tutorial! Love the top on that Les Paul too!
You are the Bob Ross of RUclips guitar lessons very cool .
I always learn to play the song from your lessons , after trying to play from other channels unsuccessfully .
Very cool thanks - just what I needed 🎸👍✨
Outstandingly solid tutorial.
Awesome, I was thinking about learning this. The only song with Tom Petty I can play is Handle With Care, which is not just by him :D
I hear an inverted c shape chord at the 13th fret plucking an arpeggiated melody in the chorus when i listen to the album as well
Thanks, I like your videos. I just did your solo to comfortably numb! Keep up he good work.
I'd say you pretty much nailed the solo slide tone.
Great teaching and guitar tone..!!!
Thanks for the video.
A lot of people sure did like Tom. When I first had my driver's license, I wore out damn the torpedoes cassette tape. Thanks again.
Was watching this and tapping my feet. Brilliant 😂
Great lesson!
Always love your lessons! What are the effects for this? You nailed the tone!
Have you figured it out ? Let me know pla
Pls’
@@gabmou528, I have not and received no reply to my request. I'm assuming he is too busy to have noticed the request.
I think even I can play this now lol. Thanks for the lesson. I’m sure Tom is smiling down
Very very nice. Thank you !
Great lesson. Thanks!
Beautiful simplex. Greta work
Thank you very much! So much fun!
Awesome lesson man! ...RIP Tom...
Thanks for doing this video!
Thanks for helping my get it perfect! You play the song so good! If you don't mind, can you tell me what would be a good pedal to get that sound. Thanks man!
Gorgeous guitar sir
Beautiful thanks for sharing :-)
Tom Petty proved over and over that song writing is the only thing that matters. RIP
What you're saying is exactly true. Great guitar players and singers are a dime a dozen, but great songwriters are one in ten million.... TP was one of those. It's true what they say though, he'll live on through the great music he left behind. Cheers

is there anything you cant play?...respect for you and your work.
Finally a straight up break down of a classic...great playing and sound, what's your setup there ?
If you found out let me know pls
Great lesson. The muting makes all the difference. How can I get somewhere near the sound you have on this song.
Love that undiscovered chunky part slide up
Tom Petty & Jeff Lynne were AMAZING together!
Dammit, I miss Tom ♥ ♥ ♥
Very good this Guy........
He dosen’t talk 2 much......
+ Very professional....
Thank you. Your slide playing seemed fine to me .
Would enjoy an American Girl lesson.
"I don't really play slide guitar" - Proceeds to play it absolutely perfectly... :)
...I can't explain how much your instructional videos are Great.....
Thank you....
Subscribe for life....
Wow, it sounds like the original... Is there an effect pedal you use for it?
RIP Free Faller
Thank you for the lesson. What amp and settings did you use?
I see you are missing the pickup covers on your Les Paul. Did you replace them with Seymour Duncans or another brand of pickup?
Your slide playing is fine, you are one of the best on youtube, I love your lessons. By the way, what is the extra toggle on your Les Paul?
Thanks bud. It's a coil switch. Up is single coil mode, down is full humbucker. Cheers
Andy
@@ShutupAndPlayGuitarTutorials Thanks Andy that's what I thought it was, I always look forward to your lessons keep them coming! Sal

Your such good player
is there any chance you could do a lesson on his Christmas Time All Over Again?
What effects are u using man please let me know thanks
Great lesson. What would you pick fender strat or Gibson les paul?
Les Paul!
Shutup & Play - guitar tutorials thanks!!
More jangle from a Fender !!
Why do you play the G chord without the B note using your middle finger? Is it a different chord? Sorry for the dumb question...thanks!
Do you know what mike is doing on the live version?
The open chord KING
My guess at effects: Reverb, slap delay, chorus and slow tremolo on the rhythm part and single note rhythm parts. Terrific !
Hey man thank you for all your lessons. Ever think about doing April Wines Version of 21st century schizoid man?
Myles Goodwyn is a very talented guy and April Wine had some great songs. I'll have to try and look at one sometime. cheers
thanks 😊
Absolutely gorgeous guitar dude...what pickups are in there? Single coil?
Humbuckers.. it’s a Gibson Les Paul and probably has single coil split as well
Having a bit of a hard time trying to keep the g note on the E string muted. It naturally wants to press down on it.
Very timely lesson, thanks. Hope you do more TP or JLynne
Anyone please tell me the model of this one!!
