The HARSH Reality of Growing in Containers!

- There is a harsh reality when growing in containers that even seasoned gardeners must face. What we plant and grow will never compare to planting in ground unless we use hundreds of containers. That’s not to say we are successful and that our harvest aren’t amazing because they are.

Use tulle instead of bird netting. Birds don't get caught in it, you can get a massive roll cheap that will last a super long time and you can cover larger areas than the bag. Really good too for greens to prevent cabbage moths, etc.
Awesome
My grandfather had a bird net on his cherry tree when I was a kid. My brothers and I were the bird rescuers. Climbed all the way up to free the lil guys.
Oh my. You’re great!
My blueberry bush is planted in the ground and it's large and loaded with berries. Every I neglect to cover it and every year the birds eat them all, I probably only get 2 or 3 for myself. 😆
Thank you putting something over your fruits that won't get the birds caught; it is so sad to see one stuck in bird netting. Love your videos, you have such a lovely voice; I could listen all day, and learn from you as well!
Thank you
for those that are curious if you can get larger netting to cover a larger area (or multiple plants at once) for the same reason, you can also buy garden netting like this in large sheets, not bags. you just cant cinch it to the plant if you're trying to protect a single plant unless you cut it to size. you can even get kits with arches (or make your own with tall garden stakes/pvc pipes) to keep them off the plants (for plants that might be a little less hardy than something like a blueberry bush). id just get whatever you need for your individual needs tho, and these bags are great if its just for single plants like this. they keep the bugs off too, not just birds!
I use the nettings..on everything! They come larger In sizes..cheaper on T-mu. I use tomato cages to hold them up..my stuff grows so much better!!
Awesome!
3:57 🤣 it's over! I just covered my berries too 😏 them birds sound like they're telling the neighbor hood " it's over " 😂 Thanks for sharing!
😁 they sure do lol
As soon as I clicked on this video, I thought "Hum, I'd love to grow container blueberries." I've never grown ANYTHING outside because there are bugs out there. Then, you talked about growing blueberries. I hadn't thought about birds. Using netting bags would be great for me as I don't want to share blueberries. Absolutely great video. Thanks so much Ms. Pam. (Oh, love your fried chicken recipe on the other channel.)
Sounds great! Give it a try! You’ll love it. And thank you so much! ❤️
Good idea thanks for sharing. Those greedy birds won't leave any!!!
You got that right!
lol...those birds were very vocal, like they were fussing at you for covering the blueberry bush. 🤣🤣🤣
lol that’s 24/7 around here
Pam I love your ideas, I've learned so much with you! My favorite teacher! ❤️💛✝️🕊️🤲🙏👋😊🥰👍👏👏👏👏👏
I'm so glad!
I'm a senior, can't go on the ground and provide for myself. therefore plant my veggies in containers.
As long as we do.
Your birds were voicing their displeasure at your plan! 🤣
lol. They sure were!
I didn’t know she had a garden channel too
lol. And I just started another one for tips on everything but cooking and gardening youtube.com/@pamspov
Pam, I see a strip of bare ground along your back fence. What you can do is use 5 gallon food safe pails and make container gardens sitting in front of the back fence for watermelons, pumpkins or squash that can trail along the bare ground. I recommend 'Lady Godiva' pumpkin ($1.98 package of seeds/Wal*Mart) which produces hull less pepino seeds at 1 lbs. worth/seeds and 12 - 15 fruits/plant. Pumpkin seeds cost $5.00/pound and these are hull less. The pumpkin flesh isn't worth using and can be fed to pigs or composted. One ounce of pepino seeds is 163 calories and 8.5 grams/protein.
I use tule and clothes pins to protect my tomatoes. Trick is get out there before the birds discover them.
AMEN MAMA PAM I used my first container for a starter of my peach tree and it worked no stressing over harsh reality no slumpin peach tree either
Awesome
Hi Pam, we use those nets and have to cover our blueberry plant tomorrow because we saw a bird investigating this evening for a new place to dine. NAY-NAY my feathered friend, those are our grocery snacks 😂
😂😂
So glad I found your channel! Here in northeast PA I grow everything in containers, away from the deer, raccoons, bears, chipmunks, squirrels, etc. It is a constant battle to protect my plants when they are on the ground (our soil is layers of rock so building a fence is impossible) but having them in containers on my deck or porch means I can harvest before the critters do!
Absolutely
I hear you. I’m NOT getting it out. Scared 😱
lol exactly!
Great video! Thanks Ms Pam! 👏🏾😁❤️
You are so welcome and thank you!
ThNk you Pam.I have a lot of tulle from sewing so I have to cover my strawberries. Those little netting bags are handy too. More sturdy than my tulle but I use what I have.❤️✝️🙏
Absolutely
Another option is using fabric tulle (ebay has it for about $10 for a 54" x 40 YARD bolt. Not only do the birds stay away, but chipmunks squirrels etc. They dont like the "feel" of it as they get snagged on it (but not really tangled)
Those are great…your garden looks beautiful ❤
Thanks ❤️❤️❤️
I'd never seen or even thought of using fine netting like that as a protective bug cover, THANKS!
Glad to help
I'm glad I found this channel...I follow you on your other channel...I am thinking of trying to grow my own vegetables...I want to start small maybe with bell peppers. I live in a apartment and I have a very small side area so I would have to grow in containers. Please do a video tutorial on how to get started with success. I really trust your insight on so many things that's why I sought out any channels you had. Thank you for the time and honest knowledge.
Thanks Pam❤❤❤
I had 2 blueberry bushes and also used the netting looked like yours. The difference was they were smaller and a pull drawer string. Some branches still had flowers and I needed the bees to do their thing and some had formed berries so I wrapped those. Was a lot of work I like yours better. I have a bird sanctuary behind me so I gave up on those. This year they have, I mean I have 😂 strawberries.
lol thanks for sharing
Good information!
Thanks!!!!
I just covered my blue berry bushes up today it is full and I want them for myself, i use garden mesh bags on mine, its good and I am ready to get my berries and enjoy them, i also covered my trees because the june bugs will be here next month and they will eat your leaves up so I put everything in a garden bag take care of your food, the same with my raised beds
Great idea!
I also grow 100% in containers and usually do ok once I moved everything up to my porch. Although, we got I. Trouble for feeding birds, so I've created a privacy area but, still figuring it out. I'm allergic to bees so I have to be careful... I crocheted a fake hive 😂 but I think these bags would be perfect .Zone 6, Buffalo.
Awesome! I use to have a deck and I did much better then as well. Thanks for sharing
I used tulle, I tied the tree then drape the tule then untied the tree which make it a little easy
Good info!
Glad it was helpful!
Great information. My Daughter is growing blueberries for the first time. I just sent her this video to her to let her know what to do to insure she has a good crop this summer. Thanks for the information.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing
We LOVE blueberries! We planted six bushes in containers hoping it will eventually be enough. I need to find some of those bags. Good idea.
I have three and so far it’s not enough! Lol
Thank You Pam for this Awesome Tip. You are a Blessing and I truly Appreciate everything you do to help and keep us informed with your recipes and your Gardening Tips and instructions how to grow Healthy Food to help feed our families. God Bless you and your family.🙏🏾❤️😊
Thank you so much. I appreciate your support. I’ve also started a new channel (no post yet) that will be for sharing tips on everything else. The link is on my homepage. It’s called Pam’s POV Thanks
Thanks for sharing 👍🏾 😊
Thanks Mona!!!
Thank you for sharing ❤
I love the mesh idea thanks for the idea!!!!❤😊
You are so welcome!
Thank you for this information.
Can you do a video on using mesh fabric to protect tomatoes?
I can do one on how I protect my tomatoes 🍅 thanks
@@TheScaredyCatGardener That would be nice. 🙂
Thanks for your help!🙂❤️
Bird you're on your own!😂
😂😂
Great video and as for birds or other critters, your gardening gloves would protect your hands if you scare them when helping to rescue them. ❤❤❤
Oh noooo. I can’t go even near them. I actually dropped my gloves the other day unknowingly and one hit my foot. I took off running 🏃🏾♀️ because I thought something moved 🤣. And I love outdoors. I’m just scared of everything out there 🤣😂
@@TheScaredyCatGardener awe, I get it. Keep growing things and sharing. You're a breath of fresh air.
Thank you for this information - was very helpful. What do you do to keep the squirrels out?
I use repel all around the perimeter of my garden. Thanks
@@TheScaredyCatGardener Thank you!!!!!!
I like your videos but I don't know your region. N E S W. My Grandmother was the best gardener and lived in Southern California. She had so many fruit trees (apricot, apple, peach, plum, pomegranate), grafted fruit trees, grape vines. I would get sick eating all of it. A good memory for me.
That’s awesome. I’m zone 8A nc
Where do you get those bags? Love your videos.
Amazon
One downside is pollinators will not be able to do their thing.
I don’t cover mine until fruit has set. At this point they’ve been pollinated. Thanks
@@TheScaredyCatGardener Awesome, great video
There are blueberry plants that self pollinate
It's over. 😂 I just bought a net for protection to
lol great
@@TheScaredyCatGardener ❤️❤️
Where do I get the bag? What is the bag called?
I was wondering that too
Amazon. Insect netting bags!
Insect netting bags. Amazon
Get the big ones! I learned the hard way and had to do a return and repurchase. Blueberry bushes have crazy branches that have to be poked up into the net bag and bigger is better, just cinch the bottom real well like Pam showed in the video. Oh...We got ours at Amazon too.
Do bird get stuck and injured in the bird netting with larger holes a lot? Its just im growing martin saskatoon berry trees. They are going to be huge. Do they have mesh like this for bigger trees i wonder? Dont want to hurt bird either Thanks
I’ve personally never used the larger hole ones because if know to many people who said birds got stuck but how often I don’t know
❤❤❤
❤️❤️
Hi, is it possible to grow berries in containers, inside? I have a forth floor, I'm not using. TY
If you have lots of light in there and can successfully water. I sure would give it a shot!!
@@TheScaredyCatGardener I will thank you. TY
So this would happen if there were in the ground as well.
Yes!
My containers are on elevated surfaces because I can’t bend over.
They call plant netting
It's sounds like you have lots of birds😂
Ummmmhmmmm I do lol
I didn’t know they get sweeter the longer you wait. Thanks. 🫐💙
Yes they do
