- The 2020 Hyundai Palisade recently won our 3-Row SUV Challenge before being crowned our Best of 2020 winner. Needless to say, we love this thing - but can it stand up to the highly anticipated redesign of the 2020 Toyota Highlander? We pitted the two head-to-head to find out.

The Palisade does have reverse emergency braking.
Its really quite a logical derivative and clear to see what a few of these automakers focus on in their production. Each is by now established, has access to the same vendors and suppliers, and manufactures in similar markets and building costs. So why does the Palisade look so unbelievably good for this price point? It new designs on the interior and exterior, it uses nice looking materials. So how can they price it less? There are a few critical places Hyundai have cut costs to look like a luxury car. First: R&D. Toyota spends an unbelievable amount of time on seemingly mundane things, testing parts extensively and focusing on reliability of materials, parts, and components. What you don't see is actually what makes a car a good value and makes it last a long time. Cheap materials age poorly and Toyotas are made to last, long after trims, accents, and panels start peeling, fading and cracking, on the "luxury looking" cars-- right at about the same time the engine starts wearing out as well.
After owning 4 Hyundai's, if I were in the market for a 3rd row suv the Palisade would be at the top of my list.
Pilot
@@totifaddye6587 Pilot is the same old boring looking SUV with a cheap interior.
@@MrJrolon1975 looks is not what you drive in a car. Safety and transmission supersedes.
@@suavemasky Hyundai is doing just fine in safety and reliability. Look it up!
If u choosing between highlander or palisade I would chose palisade, the highlander doesn’t have enough 3rd row seat space
I know the Hyundai has automatic engine start/stop with a physical disable button... Does the Toyota have a similar system? And if yes, do they both work smoothly? Those systems should always be reviewed and compared because there is a lot of variation between manufacturers.
Toyota has a disable button for start stop
I had a 2018 Highlander and it felt dated and the third row was very small. I loved the ride and smoothness but in the highway the second row seats would vibrate so much it was unpleasant. The steering wheel was very soft to the point that sometimes it felt like you didn’t have much feedback. I loved it don’t get me wrong but now I have a 2021 Palisade Calligraphy and I love it even more. If you’ve never had a Hyundai don’t talk about reliability. I’ve owned two Hyundais in the past a sonata and Santa Fe and both were very reliable and I got very good resale value.
The hybrid of the highlander is really nice tho
"No ridiculous center controllers or non-touch screens..." Looking at you, Mazda!
Yes haze, and mazda's poor exterior paint quality, but it looks like mazdas are getting better.
Tbh as far as reliability, as long as a car can reach up to 150k to 175k your good. Most people won't keep a car over 12 years or over these miles anyways
There is a reason why Palisades beats Toyota in almost all the aesthetic categories. Its because Toyota performs better, better reliability and higher resale value. In order for Hyundai to keep up, they add more usb connections, etc etc. Its all aesthetics. I care more about the actual physical performance of my car and gas mileage. In those categories, Toyota will always be better than Hyundai.
PERIODT.
Reaching for low hanging fruit huh? How do aesthetic things add or take away from performance? That's a cop out. The Palisade is a new SUV. Let them tune it for a few more generations and we'll see. Because the Palisade is badass right out of the gate.
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
Hyundai reliability is high
@@shaktishaker But still behind the Japanese cars
The palisade is not cheaper than the Highlander as mentioned in this video. I was shopping for a palisade this week, they marked up the price. MSRP is around $49.5k for the limited AWD, and the price they gave is 52.5k. We found this mark-up at 2 different Hyundai dealerships. We totally missed it at first bc 1. they didn't tell us and 2. we never heard of such practice. When asked, they said bc it's so popular (for the good value...) . Then they gave us 2k discount (which is still 1k over the MSRP price 🤦). So essentially with the same price tag as the Highlander (in real life), is the Palisade still the winner?
You really have to shop around to find a loaded Palisade or Telluride at or below MSRP, most dealers are still marking them up. My local Kia dealer has it posted right on their website, that they have a $5K market value adjustment on the Telluride SX with Prestige package, no bargaining. I would never pay over MSRP for a vehicle, and I'm honestly surprised there are still markups on these since the Telluride has been on sale for a year. Good on Kia/Hyundai for producing a winner though.
@@mattspeer01 it's marked up because they can't seem to keep any on the lot. people are buying them left and right. higher demand but not enough supply, price goes up. basic economic knowledge
Value category aside the Pallisade still wins.
Same thing happened to me and my wife. Got to the dealership and the price was higher than advertised.
I think Hyundai passide won
A lot of people here are Toyota-biased and may never would have looked at the Palisade if not for videos like this. Then they see a video like this and get mad that the Palisade (and Telluride) are winning by leaps and bounds. Don't get mad. Hyundai/Kia may be the brands that get the other automakers back on their A-game. But also, Toyota-people (trolls in particular), don't start making fictitious claims that Toyota and the Highlander are just "automatically" better. Because they're not.
*Funny how the Toyota Highlander has a long record of quality, reliability and resale value. Yet the first year the Hyundai Palisade comes out all these car journalists and commenters are proclaiming it the King..even though it has not proven itself to be quality made and reliable like the Toyota Highlander has. People are so gullible it's not even funny anymore.* 🙄
So you imply that hyundai is not quality, reliability. Ok you never owned one
@@eibarman-5750 That's not what I said.
The Hyundai Palisade is a build up of the success of the Sante Fe , thats why you can compare with the highlander even though its a newer brand. The palisade simply replaced the 3 row santa fe so its not entirely new. I have drivenToyota for 15 years before i bought my first Hyundai and i Swore i will never buy Toyota again. The company is simply so relaxed in its brand recognition and is very slow to innovate, they would be kicked out by Hyundai if they are not careful.
@@Burobee For your sake and those of everyone purchasing the Palisade I hope you are correct. And the reason Toyota is slow to innovate is that they want to make sure the technology is reliable and lasts at least 100k miles in their vehicles. While I agree the Palisade looks great in and out and has amazing features..such as the turn signal cameras showing you a picture in the dash..I just hope those cameras and other electronic features last a long time..because the warranty for electronics in Hyundai's isn't as long as for their powertrain and electronics are expensive to repair/replace no matter what the car brand. Good luck to anyone purchasing this beautiful vehicle.
it looks great.. but will it make it to 100, 200, even 300k miles without breaking down? I know the Toyota will.
My 98 sienna still going strong! 210K
Life is too short to keep a car for 200/300k miles
Palisade is luxury without Hyundai being a luxury brand
Brands evolve and get better. Being subjective is not being realistic.
Palisade has rear emergency breaking too
I got a palisade and as I drove it out of the dealer it broke down 😔 and they said if I wanted to wait until it was fixed and I said hell no so I ended up getting the Toyota Highlander platinum and it’s honestly not bad as described in this video 🤦♂️
So overall highlander is better? im curious bcs in my country Toyota had not sell the Highlander
Come back with more mileage and see which one has spent more time in the shop
Total in love with palisade ❤
Wish I could have one for me n my family.
In shaa Allah, very soon will have this beautiful suv
I'm totally in love with the highlander 😋
There is an empty place, let’s put a camera there

Check out Scotty Kilmer review on hybrids before you purchase .

Zyo Hahaha
@@weifengmao Yes..and Scotty has the figures to back it up. Are you seriously putting down Toyota's for being reliable and quality made? When did making the best vehicles in the world become a bad thing?
As Scotty Kilmer will tell you..especially after 100k miles..you can't beat Toyota quality.
How about dependability.A very important factor when buying long term
Toyota wins that over everyone all day long.
Do others agree that with the Palisade, you feel the road a little more? i hate to feel bumps too much. It's tiring and stressful. I love a vehicle that cushions all that.
Other reviewers have said the same thing about the Palisade. The ride is too firm and noisy.
One thing they didn't mention was reliability. Check Consumer Reports for that. Toyota is known for making super reliable vehicles. (I haven't owned neither.)
The leather seats of Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy feel cheap and look cheap when compared to the Toyota Highlander Platinum based from my experience doing the test drive on both.
The all new Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy Edition with 7 seaters is the hottest and the most luxurious Large SUV

Hyundai palisade ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Went to look at a 2021 Limited and was given a out the door price with a 9500 mark up from sticker. Total rip offs. Stay away from the West Side Hyundai dealer in Albuquerque.
thinking between these two and finally went with highlander.. Super happy with the ride comfort and also got a discount over 5k for highlander compared to palisade's markup price..
While I praise Hyundai/KIA for the great strides they've made, I haven't come out of their cars feeling like I should dump my Toyota, Honda, BMW cars/van for Hyundai. I can switch easily between Honda and Toyota products and not bat an eye but I'm not that comfortable with Hyundai yet. I'm going to one day.
Hyundai is relatively the new boy in town so they will have to be extraordinary in their approach which they've done almost perfectly. Toyota is trying to catch up after being being complacent for a very long time.
This is just my opinion.
@David Moore True, I agree
Agree!! Toyota car fam here and as I love the Paslisade it’s not a Toyota. However, I might make the change test driving the cars.
I was wondering if either of these two guys can drive a manual...
I'm wondering why anyone would want a manual in a large SUV?
Nice review guys, thank you. If you would take in consideration fuel economy, resale value and reliability you would have a clear winner. I owed 2 hyundai vehicles and still have one. They are ok but still not close to Japanese and 10 years behind Germans. All this small and for me minor advantages on Palisade are not worth of risking with Hyundai reliability again.
You’re saying Hyundai is 10 years behind the germans in reliability ? Hahahahahahahaha
Hahahaahah
Which planet earth do you live on? Which German brands are 10years ahead of Hyundai in reliability? Hyundai recently is doing better than Toyota actually. A lot of mechanics hate recent Toyota diesels.
Well we will see after a few years how good both the Korean twins are better than a Toyota .And I am pretty sure Toyota is way better than palisade, These korean car manufacturers try to wow u with features never ever fall for them
Why was your acceleration test and cabin sound test subjective!? Telling us which one you ‘felt’ was better is just plain lazy. Give us the data. What were the 0-60 times? What was the decibel reading when using a sound meter device? Come on guys....
Resale value. Toyota, Lexus, Suburu - occasionally another make\model gets thrown in, but overall these 3 Japanese makers have it and my loyalty.
Honda, too.
That's an old marketing gimmick. 🤣. No longer works.
palisade is better looking . but i trust the mechanics and resale value of the toyota alot more.
Highlander is better ive had both..
@@tz7710 how come?
Palisade looks like a Hearse. We test drove the Atlas Cross Sport, Palisade and Highlander recently. The Palisade has tons of features that are cool, some are likely gimmicks that will rarely be used after a few weeks post purchase. Atlas Cross Sport drives nice, looks amazing other than the fake exhaust ports and hard plastics on the interior... less features but liked it more than the Palisade. The Highlander is the most well rounded. It has the features you want and has the best driving position. If you are someone who cares about driving position, make sure to test drive with the viewpoint in mind because it's the most important thing when it comes to safety and satisfaction of driving. When it came down to it the Highlander Platinum Hybrid is what we went with because of fuel economy and Toyota backs it with a 240000 km warranty... nothing else comes close in warranty which is almost all you really need to know about what will be around in 10-15 years.
Serious drivers with real bank accounts will go for the Toyota Highlander. If you got time to play around,Hyundai seems like a nice ride.
Car stereotypes 101
Read some of the other comments. People are pissed with the new Highlander. *Then* we get into the facts about why Hyundai is a solid player...
I’m falling in love with the Palisade. I had the Traverse on my radar, then the Acadia, then back to the Traverse and the Honda Pilot. Now I’m down to two between the Pilot and Palisade 🤦🏾♂️🤔🤔🤔
Have a look at the telluride too.. palisade is the best. But better to have looked at all the options. Thanks!
Yuvraj Sandhu I did and guess what’s at the top of my list now? Yep the Telluride lol. I want one so bad
Lol. I know! I would love to have telluride's exterior and Palisade's interior.. haha
Yuvraj Sandhu yea in a perfect world that would be the perfect 3 row SUV! But the Telluride has grown on me tremendously the last week and that’s my choice
Just saw the advertisement!! Just now! Telluride has a new 2021 black nightfall edition! Gonna look into it..
Wind noise is a major factor...if the car is noisiy I’m out...Highlander for me...also the Highlander limited has more bells and whistles at the same price.
@Jonathan Losito We woud have gone 4 Runner if not for the difference in MPG.. we will travel a lot with the Highlander
The car isn’t noisy. I test drove one. It is actually quieter than the highland platinum I drove. The palisade actually has more bore bells and whistles, lol. Even heated and cooled seats in the rear, along with that blind view camera, and autopilot basically.
Dumbass
The Highlander gets 3 more mpg !
quieter, the most important - highlander win :) hyndai is really want to make things better though and they win in most categories...cool.
Plus a softer ride with the Highlander too. And you can't beat Toyota quality.
Hyundai palisade car is super
Long time reliability toyota highlander....
Just couldn’t pay $6000 for less features. I’m hoping my new Hyundai lasts miles wise. Toyota has some loyal ass customers! But y’all stuck on brands and “performance” when specs are nearly identical.
Hyundai is pure trash
Toyota last longer!!
Your the loyal ass customer for Hyundai Toyota is always the best
@@seifarri7468 stop being a Toyota purist and face the facts. Time has changed. Hyundai and Kia are top in almost every segment, not to mention genesis.

Highlander is better
If the Highlander. Hyundai Palisade limited has a god awful smell. Hyundai claims to be looking into it.
The Palisade Calligraphy was more expensive out of the door compared to the Highlander Platinum so I went with the highlander given that reliability in the end was the deciding factor. Good luck making the Hyundai last without expensive repairs.
It’s still a Hyundai at the end of the day… but koodos to how above and beyond a they went with the practicality of their vehicle. If you want resale value and a vehicle that’s gonna last you well over 10 years with no major issues Toyota is the way to go.
Hyundai has a history of making faux luxury care that break around the 100k Mille mark, I would lease a palisade not buy it
Careful. When I say that too the Hyundai fan boys attack like a swarm of angry bees..lol.
It’s great that Kia Telluride and pallisade are top winners in this segment. It beats the Highlander. In almost all categories but not in the most important one. The main reason.
Sales $$$$. And sales $$$ Highlander sale way more units. 🤷🏼♂️. But great for Kia to have all this top segment trophies. Toyota. Will say it’s fine Will keep on selling. For. Me. Telluride. But that will not be enough to catch up the Highlander in sales. 😂.
The issue is those 2 models above won't hold their value. Highlander will that why sales are higher. And thats why Toyota out last and out wits it's competitions.
In Sales nothing beats the Explorer
It doesn’t beat the highlander because the highlander has a hybrid, better safety sense software, stronger faster engine that doesn’t sound like a bitch, the interiors to me are closer than they say, faux luxury is shit. Lastly, the resale value makes the highlander thousands cheaper in the long run, lastly the best part of the Toyota is mileage/driving experience/drive quality.
@@EpicLemonMusic everything you mentioned just now is everything the palisade has as an advantage against the highlander. Not to mention the safety features really bro, the highlander is not better.
I can kinda see the Nissan Murano in Palisade’s front fascia, am I the only one?
Jonathan Losito This comment was three months ago... what was I thinking?
I think the Palisade is the winner, but the Toyota is not too bad either.....
Toyota will hold its value. The palisade will not. The highlander will out live the palisade. Less repairs. So clearly it's the highlander
Wilfred, the Palisade is like a pretty prancing pony. Highlander is a work horse.
@@Dstar5me The 4-Runner is the true workhorse! :-)
@@jeremymaillet The Toyota will hold its value but that is based on past history, we dont know if this new Highlander will will outlive or need less repairs at this point. I have friends with newer Toyotas that have had reliability issues
Folks I am not a Hyundai lover, based on past experience I would always choose a Toyota. I picked Palisade as the winner here when you look at both vehicles equally. You get more options, more room for less money with the Palisade but If I had to actually purchase a three row SUV it would be neither of those two.
Kia telluride
Whoever approved the front grill/design... Good grief needs to level up their art skills. It damn ugly and they made it worse with the 2021. I'd love it but just can't get over it. I'd rather go for the telluride much much nicer looking design.

@@julianbrooks3672 my wife said it's not bad looking. so I guess I'll have to use other reasons to pick the telluride instead. . Her reason against the telluride, apparently, like everyone else, "cause it's a Kia"
No hesitation at all, I love the Highlander and I would definitely go for it. Loove it.
The Hyundai should be at least 25% cheaper to consider it, and even like that, considering the time I would keep a car like this, I don't think I would get it.
The Highlander not only looks good, but Hyundai engines are like playing lotto, you always lose. Anybody denying this is either blind or troll.
What lotto comes with 10 year warranty ?
@@user-fx5sw4jy7hYz9Hzi Even with 20 years, if all the maker does is blaming customers for the incredibly amount of issues Hyundai tends to have. Sorry, but this is already a known issue.

@@user-fx5sw4jy7hYz9Hzi Mixing topics here. Takata was a airbags supplier, not a car maker and they suddenly faced a financial collapse (indeed, they also supplied Hyundai, so you are seriously losing the point). I guess you don't really know what happened with Takata. A more appropriate topic could be the fires on Hyundai and Kias, the clear problem that caused them (entire engine designs) and the insistence on blaming customers (where was the warranty there?). I guess you will come now with "Toyota and the acceleration issue", and I would ask for proofs you will never find (no even one today).
I'm sorry man, but your bias is obvious towards a country, I already see the way you are taking this and I don't want to get involved in stuff I don't care about. I don't really have time for trolls either.
You can only improve when you accept your problems. No, Hyundai engines are not reliable, and you know that. Even harder to trust now, that after being caught, they suddenly claimed they have designed new engines, in less than a year? (obviously pretty much the same ones with different names).
