Being Albino's, Johnny and Edgar were kept inside due to the sun and they practiced and played all the time. Their father was a musician
that played in churches and clubs. Johnny is a blues/rock & roll Icon...one of the great guitarists to play the blues. Great choice, guys,
you must be the first reaction channel to put this clip on the air. Thanks for the love.
I thought both his parents were musicians
Johnny Winter was a part of my world for the last 12 years of his life. As a concert promoter I presented him a couple of times a year and got to know him fairly well - Edgar too, but to a lesser degree. I had a lot of fun aboard Johnny’s tour bus on many occasions ! He loved to smoke, and I lived beside the US border in Ontario Canada, so I’d hook him up when he arrived, and he’d drop of his stash with me before crossing back into the US.
I’ve played both his famous guitars.
I miss Johnny.
Peace
I saw him at a little club in Columbia SC back in the late 1980's. He did a great show and I saw him light up a bowl on his Bus when we were leaving.
I got to see him in Philly once. One bad dude! Great story Cherry!
Johnny was the second concert I went to, and I was 17 at the time. My first concert was Springsteen, before anyone even knew who he was. I saw Johnny Winter in Long Island, NY. At a smallish club called 'My Father's Place.'
Great story ☮🖤🤘
Thank you for sharing. I met Johnny once. Thrill of a lifetime. One of my music idols
I think it was Willie Dixon who said Johnny was the blackest white man he ever met. This song shows you a bit why he would say that.
He was the only caucasian in The Bluesman's HoF for quite some time. He was welcomed with open arms, too!
Also, the whitest WHITE MAN he ever met, too !
Johnny was amazing and it’s great to see newbies get turned on to him! He’s the real deal. Thank you for reacting to him and Edgar. So glad I found your channel. 👍🎸
No feedback, no pedals (that I can see here), no software, no tricks, no edits, just a guy with his guitar plugged into an amp and his band, making magic happen.
Johnny's first album was a solo album titled "Johnny Winter". His follow up was titled "Second Winter" which included brother Edgar. Coincidentally, today (7/16/2024) is the 10th anniversary of Johnny Winter's passing. Johnny Winter deserves to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Johnny was used and abused by the 'higher-ups" in the music industry. I was lucky enough to see him perform at Infinity Hall in Norfolk Ct(300 seats). He was gracious and hung around to chat/sign anything for his fans after the show. The world needs more like him. Rock on.
Another Great Reaction !!! Detroit Loves You !!!!
As a pure bluesman, I think Johnny was the best, considering 1) his rhythm guitar accompaniment, 2) his fills, 3) his solos, and 4) his singing. A complete package. It's almost like having Jimmy Page and Robert Plant in one guy.
💯💯💯💯💯
you have to live the blues to play the blues,,,, johnny is criminally underrated
Still Alive And Well is one of the best blues/rock albums ever made.
Every now and then I know it's kind of hard to tell, but we are all still alive and well - love this album too.
Agreed!
Yep!😊
Left me with my face half big ass smile half stank! LOL…. 👏👏😄
Great pick guys a legend to say the least. He inspired many and helped keep the blues right out front where it belonged.
JW was definitely one of the best blues guitarists to ever walk the planet, but sadly mostly overlooked by the mainstream. I’m 66 years old and when I was a young teenager in the early 70s, me and my buds were listening to him regularly and considered him fire in those days. I highly recommend the albums “Still Alive and Well,” “Saints and Sinners,” and the live album “Johnny Winter And Live.” You guys may have found the real GOAT right here. 👍👏
Not even in the goddam RRHOF.
@@TheDivayentaIt's criminal!
Same age, couldn't agree more!
Johnny was not overlooked. He was venerated the world over.
Johnny was a note factory, an awesome player. one of the GOATS.
A note factory, I like that 👍
SRV was clean and crisp. Johnny was gritty and sleazy. I love them both if you listen carefully he has a ridiculous way of slowing down a solo before you can blink an eye
LOVE Johnny Winter.....don't see enough of him on RUclips. Johnny Winter And Live is one of my favorite albums.
One cool thing about Johnny was that while he was playing traditional blues numbers, he was innovated in other areas, like his finger-style, speed, and he played electric 12 string and an electric mandolin(type thing)
Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, and Eric Clapton were and are considered three of the all -time great Rock/ Blues guitarists of all Time. And they all played in the same era, Late 60s through the 70s at their peak.
Agree. I would add Duane Allman.
While coming a bit after those great players, we had Stevie Ray Vaughn. RIP JW and SRV! ❤😇 4:32
Johnny was more blues based than ALL of them & the superior BLUES guitarist.
F A C T
You should never leave out Terry Kath of Chicago when mentioning some the greatest guitarists!
Johnny Winter was (RIP) an amazing Blues Guitarist/Producer, he Produced Muddy Waters best version of "Mannish Boy", and a great performer. Had the good fortune to see him three times, once with his brother Edgar, and I walked out after each show totally satisfied and in awe. Johnny was a true "road dog", he was always working or touring, and he passed in a hotel room in Switzerland, while touring.
no auto tuning, no gimmicks, just playing through the amps, so pure, just talent beyond belief
Johnny !!!!! Un GRANDE !!!!!!!!!!!
My homeboy Johnny" Guitar"🎸 Winter!
Now you’ve gone and done it! My favorite blues guitarist!!! ❤❤❤❤❤ This was shot in Denmark in the 60’s. Kids hadn’t seen this before.
Tommy Shannon on bass later became Stevie Ray’s bassist. Keepin it in Texas! The bass and drums provide Johnny a strong steady support that allows him to take off and fly!!!!!
They sure did set the foundation for Johnny to go wild!! I hope you have a happy and safe holiday weekend!!
@@AirplayBeats same to you and hope you’ll be at a great cookout this week!
One of the top-five performances I've seen live was on March 16, 1975 (I was 15 yrs old) when Johnny Winter & harmonica great James Cotton played the Macon Coliseum. Most shows were over by 12 o'clock, police looked the other way in a crowd smoking weed, nobody was fighting, nobody was rushing the stage, etc. They played until finally the house lights came on at 2:45 a.m. This is one perk (if there's any other) to being 63 years old. You guys are the BEST!
RIP HE NOW RESIDES WITH ALL THE GREATS MISS YOU MR. WINTER
So good La & Chi! The guy was such a great blues player!
Real Blues, a masterpiece. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎶🎶🎶🎶👍
He did a couple of albums and toured with Muddy Waters in 77. Saw Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter and James Cotton, live at the Palladium, New York on March 4th 1977
I can't believe I missed this reaction!
I have been screaming at reactors on RUclips for at least a decade now to please not miss this Blues genius!
That was a super group right there with a young Tommy Shannon (SRV) on bass. The Winter brothers were so cool. Edgar still rockin' with Ringo's All Star Band right now.
Thanks for this. I knew there was an SRV tie in with Johnny’s band but couldn’t remember details.
Love, Love, Love Johnny Winter!!!! This reaction is going to be SO GOOD!!!!!! Long live TEXAS BLUES!!!!!!!!!!!!!💙💙💙💙💙
Johnny and Edgar of the best grade video
and ya gotta love the tribal screams at the end, straight from the soul
I saw Johnny Winters when he was the opening act for George Throgood and the Destroyers in 1988ish. Outstanding show.
One of the best guitar players in the world When he started playing guitar for Muddy Waters This is when Muddy Waters got famous But no one could sing the blues like Muddy Waters He was the real king of the blues Everyone who played the blues has covered Muddy Waters songs It’s where The Rolling Stones got the name for their band From I’m a rolling stone Muddy Waters wrote a song called The Blues Had A Baby and They Named The Baby Rockin Roll
Another great Texas bluesman!
Lol😂 “that’s what you call leavin your band in the dust”!!!
I was turned on to the blues in 1984 at a party and someone put a Muddy Waters album on and Jonny Winter was playing the lead guitar for him and I have been hooked ever since But no one could sing the blues like Muddy Waters He is the real king of the blues to me Everyone that plays the blues has covered most of Muddy Waters songs Jonny don’t get enough credit for how good he was on the guitar He is one of the best guitarist in the world
I’m not gonna lie. I would have probably came in my pants watching this in that small venue!! Rip great Johnny, one of the goats!
He was one awesome dude, he put on the best shows!
Can't believe I missed this - some of the most badass blues you can hear, and a rhythm section like a coiled spring they're so tight. My Airplay Beats playlist just keeps getting better and better. Peace!
What a playlist today! Wow!
You guys bring the heat....fock....heavy....
Second Winter is a fav album that really brings his full talent to the table for the whole world outside of TX - lik SRV.
Bit of trivia - that album is 2 discs with side 4 blank.
Check out his album John Dawson Winter the 3rd everything on it original and amazing lots of feels
Johnny is number 1
Notice a young Tommy Shannon on bass, who later played for that other Texan - S.R.V.
Oh Yeah ❤
So crispy clean on those cords.....Thanks you two. Thats a very dark white albino man
Band i was in first decade of 2000's and 2013 opened for Johnny Winter twice in local venue. Nicest dude man
Have fun boys.
The great Johnny Winter🎸💙🎶‼️. The bass player is the much younger Tommy Shannon‼️. You couldn't tell with all that hair covering his face. He spent 3 or 4 years with Johnny and even played at Woodstock with him💯. Thanks for bringing this today guys✌️👋🙌👏
Gary Moore has got to be on that list. Perhaps not the BEST but right there for sure. Messiah Will Come Again needs to be on your to do list.
Soul and Blues and just pure raw talent. An experience that people of your talent should not miss.
Steve Marriott too with Five Long Years. One of the best performances ever laid down
I requested "Messiah" live at Montreaux to these guys a while back.. keep pushing, they really NEED to hear Gary. A musician's musician!!
I love Gary’s version of Stormy Monday!
Any conversation about All Timer Blues guitarists has room on the short list for Johnny , gentlemen .
Yeah , the Winter household must have indeed been "Crazy" ..."Crazy good" product here .
You know that's Tommy Shannon from Double Trouble playing Bass with Johnny at this point in time!!
Johnny was a bad bad man on the guitar. One of the baddest for sure. Overlooked now in terms of popularity, always good to see some appreciation. Really liked his Roots album late in his career too.
I think this was when The English bands where drifting into blues n Johnny n Edgar went over there n gave them the Step aside boys, This is how it's done
Welcome to The Blues World of Winter 🎸
Rest in peace Jonnny
Terry Kath of Chicago could never be left out on any poll over the best guitarists. May he RIP. Jimi Hendrix was asked once how it felt being the greatest to which he replied "I don't know, go ask Terry Kath!"
their is a song on his album White Hot & Blue album called Last Night that is a monster blues song ! The whole album is fire
You guy's didn't notice SRV's bassist Tommy Shannon.
gary moore is my fave , saw him 2 times when he was in thin lizzy . . the loner live is a great song as well as parisienne walkways live.
When you get into Johnny Winter. It's a good time. Great at Woodstock ✌️🪴🌄
Texas Blues baby oh yeah 😮
Johnny was the first white man inducted into the blues hall of fame. If you look at his Bass player in this video that's Tommy Shannon, who you will see in Double trouble playing Bass for Stevie Ray Vaughan you can see in all Stevie's live performances. That London audience didn't really know what to think about that guitar playing back in 1970.
He brought great blues players like Muddy Waters to play at his shows, and opened up whole new careers for several black blues greats
Muddy waters called Johnny his son several times in interviews and they produces Grammy winning albums together..
Stevie Ray Vaughan had similar tight relationships with many of the great older blues players. I used to go to his new years eve party shows in Houston and he always had several of his childhood blues players on stage with him, and at the end they all went on stage and played together. It was awesome.
I drove through Port Arthur Texas where the Albino brothers were from. I can understand why they played the blues. What a great guitarist!
You have to play “It’s my own Fault” off the Johnny Winter and live album❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥he also did some great stuff with Muddy Waters!
Thanks!
Johnny winter is unmatched. I call it sleazy guitar playing at its finest.
Johnny Winter! Still Alive and Well is one of the most rockin tunes. Every now and then, I know its kinda hard to tell, but I'm Still Alive and Well.
Aside from Texas and the blues, theres another connection between Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughan: Tommy Shannon was the bass player for both.
I really want more reactors to check out Johnny Winter. Would love to see you guys do some of the songs from (or a track-by-track of) his album, Still Alive And Well.
Beaumont, Texas' favorite son. Saw him open for Janis Joplin in 69,Beaumont Civic Hall.
I saw him play the Pickle Barrel in Vermont about 30 years ago. Soooo good!
Excellent pick !!! He has so much great material !! Some rocking blues too ( " Still \Alive and Well " is a great one . Please also try a very underated guitarist, ------Frank Marino, and Mahogany Rush. Try "Johnny B. Good" Live, and " Ain,t Dead Yet" Live. Another great artist./ Guitarist.
The guy on bass is Tommy Shannon. The same bassist in Stevie Ray Vaughns band Double Trouble.
Unseen eyes
Did you notice, on bass, a young Tommy Shannon. Went on to play with SRV and Double Trouble!
Always here for Johnny and Edgar Winter….Next up “Edgar Winter - Save the Planet” from the White Trash album….studio version….pure gospel/blues/rock bliss
Johnny Winter Highway 61 Live
Tommy Shannon the bassist had the pleasure of playing with two Texas guitar phenoms Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
My 2 favorites by Johnny are this one and BB's Its My Own Fault. Tommy Shannon's Bass Lines on both are the purist Blues Progressions I ever heard. Johnny IMHO at this period in time (late 60's) was at his best before the drugs got to him. He may have been even a better Slide Guitarist than Skydog!
hey guys
check out...Johnny Winters..."tv momma" just Johnny and his guitar...epic!!!
Tommy Shannon on bass, well before SRV and Double Trouble
My top five favourite guitarists - Dave Gilmore, Johnny Winter, Rory Gallagher, SRV, Gary Moore. Honourable mentions to Jimmy Page, Jimmy Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen and Steve Stills.
And all the Allman dudes! Duane, Dicky Betts and of course, the phenomenal Derek Trucks!
Oh crap! Then there’s Jeff Beck! And Kim Simmons of Savoy Brown! Then there’s Buddy Guy, Howl’n Wolf, and all the 2nd generation blues men from Texas and Chicago! 5 isn’t enough! Lol
Peace
Toy Caldwell also ...
Johnny Winter, and Jimi Hendrix had a lot of similarities on their attack, and quick change ups. I believe these two are the greatest blues/rock guitarist icons that ever graced the earth. In their time neither of them couldn't be matched. If you listen, the band is working real hard to keep up with Johnny's transitions, and fast tempo. Hendrix was the same. They had a lot of the same qualities, but they played way different styles. The more you hear Johnny....The more you like it and want more....Same with Hendrix. Johnny, and Jimi both started playing professionally in the late 1950's around the same time. It is hard to say if either had an influence on the others playing, or style of playing. I believe they had played together a couple, or few times. But, I am not certain if that was Duane Allman that played with Jimi Hendrix. But anyway.....
the bass player here is Stevie Ray's bass player....Tommy Shannon!! mind blown!
Eduardo de España aqui otra vez diciendo que La and Che you make me so damn happy ! This is such a legendary performance by the line up from his Columbia Rec. years with rock solid Uncle John Turner on drums and Tommy Shannon who became SRV's bassist later on, playing bass chords to heavy up the sound. It always cracks me up that the audience has no idea how to react a player like this but hey they got it on video anyway ! I got to see him live in 1977 with Jon Paris on bass and crazy ass drummer Bobby T. Unforgettable. One thing about their parents is that were very religious and got spooked when Johnny was born albino. They got over it but when Edgar came out that way too a few years later. I guess the family stopped right there. They both listened to EVERYTHING blues, jazz, country, pop and could do it ALL. You gotta hear the Still Alive and Well as well as Johnny Winter ...And ( the studio album ) with Rick Derringer. Peace and Good health.
Cool note - that bass player went on to become Stevie Ray Vaughan's bass man in Double Trouble!
The Winter brothers put out the best Texas blues there is, especially Johnny, imo. Check out his "Second Winter" album - the first 2 tracks will floor you.
R.I.P. Sugar! You are NOT forgotten ❤️
I've seen most of the greats of my generation accept Hendrix. Johnny, Jeff Beck, Roy Buchanan blew me away the most.
Nice pick!!!!
The bass player was in Double Trouble years later (SRV's band)
Johnny and Edgar had their own bands, had the chance to see them both playing together a couple of times!
Edgar's band was called Edgar Winter's White Trash and Johnny's best band was called Johnny Winter And. They are probably best known for their live performances. So I would say Edgar's best two cd's would have to be..... Roadwork (a live cd.... and please check out their versions of the songs Tobacco Road and Back In The USA, on this cd....but all the songs are good on this one) and They Only Come Out At Night (which is a studio cd with Free Ride and Frankenstein)..... and for Johnny's Best 2 cd's, I would have to say Johnny Winter And Live (check out It's My Own Fault and Jumpin Jack Flash.....but all the songs are great on this one) and Johnn Winter Captured Live ( check out the songs Highway 61 and Boney Maroni.....but every song on this cd is great) Check it oujt, guys. You'll love it. Kurt from Maine
The bass player was also SRV's bass player
Tommy Shannon with his white Jazz, on bass. He was SRV's bass player.
