  • An in depth conversation with UK commercial photographer and videographer TOM WRIGHT about the newest generation of cameras and how we're being marketed to by the big companies. Whether you're a film maker, portrait photographer, wedding photographer, or hobbiest this conversation is for you. An in depth look at the new Fujifilm XH2 and XH2s (as well as the differences), a chat about some of the flaws in the Canon R5 system, why Tom doesn't prefer Sony, honest perspectives on Leica and more.
    This is the video form of a full length podcast from the Photographic Collective Podcast hosted by US, Arkansas based wedding photographer Miles Witt Boyer. Miles is a Fujifilm X Photographer and global ambassador who is using the new Fujifilm Xh2 and Xh2S in real world scenarios. The purpose of this interview was to discuss why and how purchasing the right gear matters, how to get beyond the specs and discover if a camera system is a good decision for YOUR brand, and how to shop smart.
    Whether you're interested in the 8k / 6k open gate options in the newest systems or in need of faster auto focus and more crisp lenses we walk through the elements in 2022 of camera shopping that matter, and a few that do not.

    I know this video is old(er), but still wanted to comment. This is evergreen content and deserves to be promoted. Glad I found your channel. And… I know this story. I shot technical work in college on a 4x5 view camera, but after college lost access to that camera. Canon, canon, more canon. Then one day I made the leap to Fuji X-E2. I used that camera for a decade, loving it, until the X-S10. And I loved that camera. Bought the X-T5, traded it for the X-H2. Another camera I love. Just this year got the GFX100S and omg, I’m still wondering why I didn’t do that years ago. Some of my lenses are for commercial work, but my favorites are adapted manual focus lenses (and sometimes even my clients will notice the different look they give). Gear does matter.

    Great chat! That’s why I shoot Sigma lenses on my Sony cameras - way more character even though they are technically inferior in every way to native lenses. I grab the 100V 75% of the time when I go out to take pics. For video, it’s the FX3 for me - can get very cinematic footage with very little effort.

    Great talk, enjoyed listening.
    I count myself as a serial tester recently. I've shot Nikon for as long as I've shot digital and I've now worked up to a full Nikon Z kit with the Z9... Before the Z9 I used the canon tryout to try an R5, loved the autofocus, but didn't gel with anything else about the system or the files for some reason. So ended up with the Z9 but, it's big, heavy, and I find it's an effort to actually force myself to shoot.
    I've currently got an x-H2s on loan from fuji and it's awesome in many ways, but being a cropped sensor the noise performance isn't as good as the Nikon, and some of the usability parts of the camera aren't as polished as the Nikon, but the files look so nice... There isn't a perfect camera, you have to work out which compromises you're willing to accept, and sometimes how the camera makes you feel while using it is just as important as the image itself. But making the choice is so hard when it takes such a large monetary investment. If I was to be honest with myself, I'd rather shoot both systems for longer, I'm just not sure my bank balance would survive it :)

    Thank you Gents this eye opening. I also switch to fuji 5yrs ago from Canon but I cannot accept the AF argument. Yes imperfections and non clinical look is great but soft and unuseable is not the same thing. Any camera company Should have great af before anything else.
    I might even just take a step back to say D850 and use the fujis as toys. But this was a great podcast and I am now really thinking of getting a d850 as a workhorse and keep my fujis for non work. i just cannot deal with the AF anymore. When a subject is standing 2m away and well lit at f8 single point. It surely has to nail it 99.9%. My old 10D had a 100% hit rate at 2m away in well lit environment. same with my 60D 7D 5Dmk2 and my last dslr 5dmk3. I also own a eos R for situations where AF is a must. I just hate shooting with the R and the files is as you say to clinical and difficult to edit. When the fuji system can focus like my old 60D Canon I will look at upgrading again.

    I am listening to this podcast and appreciate your authentic thought put. We certainly need to look into photos that stir our emotions without pixel peeping, looking for flawless clinical images, that need a lot of work to make it look ideal for skin tones. I hate airbrushing skin tones or toning down skin tones. It shouldn’t be so sharp as to being too revealing. We lose the emotion and we are looking at a pristine car taken off the lot. That’s the allure of classic cars. I hope this is makes sense. Appreciate you guys.

    Thanks now I’m in a crisis of 35mm f1.4 vs the 33mm f1.4. I loved the character from the older 35, but now I want to compare the two. Also this talk is amazing and I’m only half way through it.

      Just want to make sure the glass you purchase for the new cameras can resolve correctly. I know the 33mm can but I wouldn't be surprised if the 35mm 1.4 struggles.

    Open gate is such a plus for me, I 100% shoot for social media, can I ask a dumb question - I find my 35mm fullframe lens the most useful, on Fuji is their a equivalent lens thats good for hybrid work.

    But the thing is that in the analoge days you could choose different filmstock for different looks you were going for using the same camera. Am I supposed to have different cameras now that have different looks baked in? I think flexible files that let you adjust everything in post is a great achievement. You always have a selection of picture profiles to choose from besides that if you want.

    • @bytomw
      @bytomw Год назад

      And you absolutely have that option. The default is for a sensor to be flexible. If you want flexibility you have a wealth of choices.
      I just wish that more camera companies chose a starting point that had a little more character. Fuji and Kodak spent YEARS developing their colour science and working out what made colours appealing. It just seems like a missed opportunity to not make that position the default. Leica and Fujifilm seem to be making this a priority.
      I’m not arguing flexibility is a bad thing. Im just saying it’s not the only thing that matters.

    • @mileswittboyer.photoco
      @mileswittboyer.photoco  Год назад

      Ultimately we are going to convince people to not develop their own creative voice. That’s absurd. But a camera company that is approaching art with a look in mind is a collaborative experience that at least for me has pushed my art further than essentially shooting in f log and spending more energy in post than I am in the present.

      @@mileswittboyer.photoco I personally would appreciateit if Fujifilm released all film simulations as LUTs like they did with Eterna. I love Astia f.e., but the dynamic range just isnt great if you record it baked in. Sure, you can modify, but its just not a professional workflow.

      @@bytomw I didnt watch the entire podcast, did you talk about CinetoneS? I think thats pretty damn good too sooc. Also, did you talk about the pros and cons of the X-Trans sensor vs. the Bayerpattern when it comes to color?

  • @robmcd
    @robmcd Год назад +1

    This is mind blowing. This really spoke to me.
    I had a Canon M6 as my first camera which I quickly moved on for an A7iii which I “loved” but yes I moved it on because I got sick of the bad colours of the files. And when the A7RIV was released Sony marketing said “improved weather sealing” I don’t want improved I want “weathersealed” something definitive.
    I bought the X100V which I loved but the viewfinder was a bit small for me and it hurt my hand so I got the XT4, I sold all my Sony gear and got the R5 which I really do like but it is so uninspiring with it connected to the current canon lenses I have, including the boat anchor 50 1.2. I ordered the XH2S and love it to bits but I do think the XH2 was probably more for me BUT there is something about the 26megapixels which is a perfect size. After listening to this I’m considering the GFX50SII to replace my R5 because wabi-sabi is real and character is everything. I think Fuji will sell out of the 35mm 1.4 after this podcast.

      Fujifilm largely make the choices I want them to make as a photographer. I don’t see them adding features that break their brand ethos.
      Products get launched for different audiences but each product makes sense for a particular use case.
      The XH2s is a prime example. To me it’s a near perfect hybrid camera for video and stills.
      I’m watching the GFX system closely. The 55mm 1.7 they have on their roadmap could be the only lens I need on that sensor size.

    Pretty sure little bit of misinformation is taking place about sensors. Sony for sure is mass producing them. Question is if it's Sony design and other companies are adapting them using Sony tech or are they designed by Fuji, Nikon etc (they are patent holder's) jest using Sony infrastructure to mass produce to lower the costs.

    • @BryanKeithPhoto
      @BryanKeithPhoto Год назад

      Sensors don't come bundled with any tech. If it did, Sony would not have a competitive advantage with their cameras (eg autofocus)
