  • In this episode we're taking another look at hidden details in Final Fantasy VIII with an exploration of the Balamb Garden Network in the Balamb Garden Study Panel. This quirky device is introduced in the first 5 minutes of the game, yet is never necessary to return to again... however, plenty of lore and an expanding assortment of content in Selphie's Diary such as Sir Laguna's page discussing Laguna Loire makes it a compelling feature to return to in later game events. It is also the direct reward of the Timber Maniacs sidequest which sees us discover Laguna's articles spread throughout the world.

"Which apparently will be the day when pigs fly". That hit me right in the heart. This game has so much potential for a remake it hurts, but I think what you explained in another video was totally right that it can't come right after 7R.

Yep, I do hope a remake is on the cards but if they choose to drop an FF9 first as was rumoured I'd understand that.

An action remake where you get to play Squall directly is my dream game. Something like the 7 remake but with the junction awesomeness would be so amazing. If it would be action but as faithful as possible I would die and go to heaven

As a Selphie fan I read all of this, It felt like she was the character they put the most work into aside from Squall and Rinoa. This was basically a MySpace page years before it became a thing where she would regularly update it as the game went on. There were a bunch of stories about Laguna and his exploits through the timber maniac's papers told from Selphie's perspective.
FF8 was a bit messy at times but they put so much heart into it.

I agree it had a lot of heart put into it, which is why I'm surprised that the developers (who largely still work at Square) don't talk about it much or give it more attention. I agree Selphie had a lot of characterisation if you go looking for it, she was also an interesting fly-on-the-wall who gives an outsiders perspective of Squall in her diary, which contrasts with the Squall perspective we get from his internal monologues, I really liked that.

Yup, Timber was an awesome location I tend to revisit it a few times in the game when I get the mobile Garden/Ragnarok just for the vibes haha.

Nice video. I like that you pointed out the great details and world building in the BG Network, but also acknowledge that it's not presented very well. A case of "Tell don't Show" unfortunately.
This is something that could definitely be improved upon in an FFVIII remake if we ever get one.

Yep, plenty of potential, I used to fear them making a remake of 8 but now I'm really hoping it comes.

this touches on what might be FF8's biggest liability: so much "essential" information is tucked into optional and entirely missable corners of the game. Like randomly skipping middle chapters of a novel. And so an already convoluted story (especially in the back half) can suddenly feel even more disjointed, as elements appear to emerge out of nowhere, because the foreshadowing was housed in, say, a random NPC cadet's one line of dialogue and the player never saw it. Kiros confirming Squall's parentage being perhaps the most glaring example.

FF8 has so much great world building, it's just a shame so much of it is only optional content like this that a lot of players missed. Great video!

I like it when games have in-game encyclopedias that get into deep lore topics. What comes to mind immediately is Xenosaga pt1. It allows the writer to include a bunch of optional worldbuilding details without having to dump it all on the player with exposition. Though it can be done badly like in FF13 where that game's database was used to get across pivotal information that should have been revealed in cutscenes.

Yeah I first appreciated this in Assassin's Creed years ago where they gave historical context to the time and places we were in, which wasn't essential reading but really embellished the setting. I agree that's one of the places FF13 fell down, I had to keep referring back to it because a lot of the terminology and plot points like the l'cie etc just confused the heck out of me on my first runthrough.
