Jake Lamotta is quoted here as saying that Robinson was one of the hardest punchers he ever faced. This coming from the guy with the best chin pound-4-pound of all times.
This guy is amazing, both of them are just on the sheer number of fights these guys fought. Modern day fighters rarely fight more than 3x a year and even that is considered busy. Robinson fought more fights between 46 and 51 than most modern day boxers fight in the lives. These guys didn't have the nutritional information and the science of sports we have today. None of the modern fighters can even come close.
+Humanforfreedom 95 the pay then was so bad guys HAD to fight that often. Lamotta made $20,000 for the fight with Dautheille for the title. Now, guys at that level get 10's of millions for a title fight.
No fighter gets to 91 fights. So go on a streak like that in 5 years is ridicilous. I saw someone else mention that some of them were bums. Out of 91 fights, you're bound to get some lesser competition. But that's still a massive amount of fights in such a short time
tarstarkusz, Damned straight! Robinson--with the possible exception of Ali--was the greatest fighter who ever lived and LaMatta was one of the greatest. These were real fights! You don't see that today.
These two warriors weere two of the greatest to step into the ring! True champions and true Americans. Thank the good Lord that we have such a rich heritage in pugilistic history!!!!
The incredible Sugar Ray , if we only had fights of this P4P best at Welterweight. Robinson NEVER lost a fight at Welter and in fact while he was a Welter beat many Middleweights. And the only guy ever to beat him in his Prime was the Middleweight Jake La Motta. Robinson of course beat Jake 5 of the 6 times they fought. Robinsons best was at Welter , and in fact in this fight he was probably still in his prime , but the wars he had by this time were starting to add up. Lamotta no matter who fought him always were in for a very hard time win or lose. I happen to have been at a Ray Robinson fight in the 50's and it was an honor to see him work. We will never have a fighter that in every category could do so many things like the great Ray Robinson. R.I.P ETERNAL CHAMP!!!!!
I can remember reading an interview by a newspaper here in the UK with Jake just after the Raging Bull was released and was receiving great acclaim. Jake was asked if he was happy with how De Niro portrayed him in the film. Jake replied, 'yeah he played my well except that fact that.... I was wayyyy worse in real life'! (says it all huh?)
If LaMotta had had as much boxing skill as he had heart he "could have been a contender." Love the blow-by-blow commentary. Reminds me of listening to Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali fights on the radio as a kid.
No middleweight who ever lived had an iron chin and could take a punch like Jake Lamotta. Jake takes about 55 punches in the 13th round before the ref stopped the fight. I always wondered if Marcel Cerdans plane hadn’t crashed in the Azores. Could Jake defeat Marcel for a second time. Incredibly Jake lived to be 95.
How would Monzon and Halger have got on with these guys? Both of them have a better chance of beating La Motta; however, Robinson is a whole different ball game...
No 1 could ever match .robinsons .blinding handsome. And accuracy .his work work .was never matched .he was lethal with both paws .could deliver knock out punches on the retreat .
Everytime the conversation begins to flow the interview gets taken in a different direction with a question on a different topic great to here LaMotta and sugar talking tho
Ro bingo's footwork. Is unmatched 2 this day. Or his blinding handsome. Also ability 2 hit with both paws .and deliver knock out punches .on the retreat.
Loved LaMotta's "I knew every move you made, and you knew every move I made." After 5 punishing bouts, they were all in for #6, knowing just what was ahead! Compare to Canelo dragging his feet for years before meeting GGG for a rubber match.
Totally. They should also colorize the fight footage and remaster it to make it in HD. They should also CGI a dragon to fly into the ring during their fight.
You need a chin of cast iron to fight Robinson the way LaMotta did. Applying constant forward pressure to SRR would get 99% of middleweights knocked out before the 6th round..
He felt pain in his Robinson fights, especially their sixth fight in 1951, the valentine day massacre, and that pain lasted a long time after the fight. No doubt he's been hurt during some of his many other fights. Unfortunately a lot of these tough guys like to come across even tougher, it adds to the myth, like saying I never felt pain in 106 fights.
Jake may not of been a skilful boxer .he kept coming 4ward .he would take 3 punches to give a. The pit bull of the ring . The canine gladiator of the ring .jake we salute u .
Lamotta and Basilio, two tough Italians, were the only fighters who could fight Ray and make it close, and both men actually beat Ray once. But Ray beat them a combined seven times, even though they were the best competition Ray ever had (though some thought Basilio, Ray's nemesis) should have been the winner in two of their three fights). At any rate, Ray was more than just the greatest boxer of all time, he was a great athlete, period. He also could have been a great dancer, which I'm sure Lamotta wishes he had, as Jake may have held the championship for years without Ray around.

Satterfield hit harder
Amazing chin but I think the greatest chin in boxing belongs to George Chuvalo.
Carol froch had a chin of steel also. Believe he was middleweight as well.

Exactly today its about money rather thsn passion for the sport

@@risingbull84 No possibility that Ali was greater. Even Ali said that P4P no one comes close to Robinson.
TWO OF THE GREATEST LEGENDS EVER....CLASS ACTS BOTH
If these guys were 40 pounds heavier it would look eerily like Joe Frazier and Ali fighting.
Good observation
LaMotta also stalks his opponent a lot like Marciano
Cest bien plus beau que les frazier ali lamotta etait tres technique frazier beaucoup moin
The Italians were tough back then...Can't find no Italian middle weights today...
Find the cruseirwheight Fabio Turchi 13-0 11 KO, now is in the team of Holyfield and had a fight in America.
Yes they are shit now, La Motta and his peers were one of a kind generation
When a community hungry, they tough, when they full belly, they like to sit home and watch telly,
Jake was American of Italian descent, his parents were Italian but Jake was born on the Lower East Side of New York, tough neighborhood.
These were great fights. Don't have 'em like this any more. jesus lamotta had a chin
2 of the best middleweights of all time

Wow De Niro really got LaMotta down to a tee, amazing performance.
Ray is so humble, LaMotta is all me me me. And Ray just sat there and smiles. Awesome. Love them both. Incredible fighters.
@@AlexanderKovalenko3377 Thought I heard something. Must of been a cricket.
The great news is after all the punches these guys took, they still had their marbles.

This is awesome! Love them watching and talking about the battles they were in together
This is fantastic. Two great boxers who appreciate each other so well. And both were trying to kill each other figuratively in that ring.
LsMotta does a great DeNiro
I heard things...
@@quinnrollen lol. I heard things Joey.
I love that these guys have respect for each other.

Not true.
It was his ex-wife who said that and it was some time after the premiere.
@@NostalgiNorden NO< I'm quoting La Mota himself.
LEGENDARY FIGHTERS, With gentleman qualities, Truelly remarkable 👍
I cant believe jake is still alive... I hope he reach 100
yeah, hard to believe huh?
He gone now, made it to 95 though
Absolutely amazing interviews.
this is superb footage, thankyou
Thank you for this. I love the honesty and respect of fighters.

Great sportsmanship.
Jake looks like the type of guy that knows a guy that’ll loan you some money, not from a bank.

Jake Lamotta has the emotional intelligence of a pinball machine!

I love that clinching was only for, when someone was hurt, or they got too close during exchanges
Damn, DeNiro sounded just like LaMotta.
Ray was sharp, always looking for counters..

LaMotta outjabbed Robinson for 10 rounds...
More bullshit.
Robinson is too polite to disagree with LaMotta.

Is Dunphy doing TV or radio commentary? It's the best, most graphic commentary I've ever heard from him--usually very selective in his comments.
Retreat a d giving up were words jake did nt understand .a true warrior .who never took a backward step .
Muhammad Ali not only copied Sugar Ray Robinson's style but more importantly , also his patient and studied approach , never rushing things .
@LimitedNewsCorp and you play pinball.
No way they don't fight like they used to 15 rounds and 2 flights a month
Jake lamotta was underrated. Look at him out jab Robinson every round! And he also should have won 3 of the 6 bouts. But hey, shit happens
LaMotta is one of the last guys you would want to get in a street fight with.

Jake saying he was never hurt in boxing? lol come on now
***** Hard Headed Ginny..
He said in an interview when he was older that he just had it in his head that he could not be hurt, he said himself that it was insane.
Are you familiar with how crazy tough LaMotta was. He would invite shots to his face. Had a crazy pain tolerance.

Sugar sweating so much like he’s ready to go against Lamada right now. And he’s biting his tongue the whole time
6 and a half pounds overweight the day before the fight?

I cant believe Suger ray said Jake want not the hardest bunchier..Jake was the only one to Knocked him down and Knocked him out ...
Other boxers knocked Robinson down.
No one ever knocked him out.
Lamotta beats deniro with his voice..
@XxDiddyDidItxX ..JAKE LAMOTTA Knocked Suger ray OUT !!! and won the fight.
This guy talking. Ray beat him so many times. Lamotta the wannabe.
Eric Stewart could make a strong case for lamotta winning 3 fights. 1/3/4
100% he won 1/3 4 you would have to be generous
'I drank soup for quite awhile that night'...interesting....I guess 'drank soup' means eating jabs in the parlance of the day
He's saying his jaw was too hurt to chew food

Ray so charismatic. Lamotta looks like a sleaze bag, through and through, I don't like his character.
Loser
the black men always do have a height advantage :-/ Robinson seems like Mayweather always running -_- Over rated fighter.
It's call boxing stick and move and Ray was Beautiful doing it!!
