SRR was nearly 50 years old in this interview with nearly 200 pro bouts and look how alert and well his speech is, no slurring or slow thinking process, just shows how talented he truly was and no doubt the G.O.A.T.
05gtdriver Unfortunately, he did have brain injury from boxing. He would eventually die of alzheimer which most neurologist attribute to boxing.
realityme Yes, I realize SRR wasn't damage free, but nonetheless, in this interview and considering the amount of pro bouts he fought, he sounds pretty darn good for all that he had sustained. Cheers!
05gtdriver your right, he sounds very well in this video my friend. Cheers
Actually the cause of his death is not really Alzheimer's disease which people thought of, he died of the diabetes hi suffer way before he was diagnose with Alzheimer's disease
it's strange how alot of great boxers before the 70s didn't get punch drunk
what a humble man.
Its safe to say Sugar Ray was a super human.
Larger than life
he dosent even look human
@@tnwodisciple42069 but to take as many hits as he did and still be able to function like he does is incredible
He had tornado hands. Sheeet
@@tnwodisciple42069 facts he has a cold look to him and aura of a very dangerous man and he knows it
What an absolute legend. Modern athletes could learn a lot from the way this man carried himself. The real Champ!
Amen for sure
nah man....the dude abused his wife and kids and was known for being a bully and a bad businessman. don't get me wrong phenonmal fighter, the goat even but you can't hit your women
This is my first time seeing an interview of Sugar Ray Robinson I never heard him speak before, he was a great humble ambitious man.
..ALSO MY,FIRST TO SEE HIM OFF THE SQUARE RIng...IN A SUIT.
When people was still down to earth
He died 17 years later from diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. In addition to his 200 actual fights, the sparring sessions count as well. He was a true gent and gracious person. Money doesn't buy class, he had it naturally. He was my favorite fighter, but be fought fare pass his prime because of finances.
Very true. Watching this, you now 'understand' why SRL wanted to try and emulate his hero to which I think he successfully did.
the king is dead, all hail the king!
his reign was during the toughest era of the sport, he had 200+pro fights, won most of em. classy as hell!
kevindlinc spot on, bro!
"the king is dead, all hail the king" isn't a compliment even though it's commonly seen as one.
It's a really confusing saying, but its meaning is:
We don't necessarily like king, but the king being dead is big news so we have to shout about it (the king is dead!). But don't worry, we now have another human to immediately replace him and bow down to just because we have to (all hail the king!)

sugar ray robinson was a great boxer and a true gentleman.
he was alright but joe louis is better
Schorched Snake nope pound for pound the best ever...Id say a tie with Ali
IN MY Mind there is no question that SRR Is the best ever.
Schorched Snake his overrated
@@PP-ec6cw Even Joe Louis said SRR was the greatest pound for pound boxer of all time. I'll take his word over yours any day.
28 years after his death he is still considered best pound for pound in boxing history along with ali imo
He's definitely in the top 3 of all time. My personal top 3 would be Floyd Mayweather Jr, sugar ray robinson and sugar ray Leonard
@@vfamily4396 Even roger mayweather said in an interview floyd is only top ten. Floyds got absolutely nothing for sugar ray. Sorry to piss in the cheerios of floyd fans.
@the patriot delusional idiot. Ali could be considered better he fought tough competition.
@@Alexandra-ge5yc floyd, Seriously? You can't deny he's good at what he does but I don't think he woulda been able to cope in the 1950's let alone the 1920's
Bad ass if only this humble legend was still alive today. He would be nearly 100 years old
What a wonderful life - really good man, so different from the character of most current boxers. They could learn a lot by reading the lives of Ray Robinson and Joe Louis.
Yeah man possibly
Ray Robinson gave tremendous interviews throughout his life. Champion in and out of the ring.
I've always seen black and white videos and pictures. It's good to actually hear this man's voice 🤗.
More than 200 professional fights and speaks like a totally normal man, I think this shows why he’s considered the greatest pound for pound boxer to ever live.
Not to mention an 85-0 amateur career with 69 knockouts.
Ray, sadly, years later became greatly affected in a negative manner by boxing all those years. Couldn't remember family members, etc. But yeah, he is the best ever p4p. Never beaten in a welterweigtht bout, and he had a about 100 pro welterweight bouts, world welterweight champ for years.
Never lost a fight pro or amateur fighting in bouts sanctioned at welterweight (147 pounds) and below at times as a young amateur. NYC golden gloves champ 2 years in a row, even beat Willie Pep in amateurs when both were young teens.
Welterweight Sugar Ray Robinson = P4P best ever in boxing.
@@nycinstyle negative mind
@@448DamonXX I am not being negative, I m writing the truth. Ray is the best ever, he trained and sparred and fought month after month year after year for decades. His mind grew senile early. His own family talks about it. He also developed diabetes in middle age. That had nothing to do with boxing.
He was a fantastically conditioned athlete, but he stayed in boxing too long. You cant keep sparring and fighting getting hit in head and think you will be okay in later years. Very few are so lucky. Ray Robinson 5 feet 11 inches tall, strong, super fast, taleented skillful welterweight. Best ever. Ray Leonard, Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis and most all other boxers say it. P4P Sugar Ray Robinson is the best. Listen to RAy talk in his 60s. You will see what I mean. His own kids talk about it. Ray is the best and it even happened to him. You have to watch out in boxing so many years. Back then, especially, sparring, fighting so often. It happened to Ali. They had great lives. Later years boxing affected them.
Who knows just because you are not mentally sharp anymore does not necessarily even mean you are sad. It is not an insult to say a boxer developed problems from his boxing when he entered his later years. Most of his life, boxing kept him healthy and strong and young. Being healthy in great shape automatically should make you a happier person. Sugar Ray Robinson had a great life. He was in good enough shape to box pro into his mid 40s. Look at all the fat out of shape slobs in their 40s today. lol I look up to Robinson. Absolutely boxing overall is good for you, IMO. You just have to be careful about sparring so many years so often and fighting tough fights year after year. Sugar RAy I wish he retired after he won his middleweight title back from Basilio, Even earlier he could have retired after he won it back by beating Turpin. Yet, he needed money and fought on years and years more. He fought on over a decade after he was already the best ever. He was welterweight champ, 2 time middleweight champ. Then he fought on way over a decade longer. Lost and won back the middleweight title 3 more times and ended up fighting even unranked boxers for very little money. That part of his life is sad. He had trouble handling, saving his money.
@@nycinstyle yeah but it’s a good thing how boxers are today that their more business men that fight instead of boxers that like to make money so that will help them in the long run
Sugar Ray the greatest of all of time . The interviewer would not move his hand off Sugar ' s shoulder lol
lol i was just thinking the same thing
daboss000 Greatest is debatable. Henry Armstrong and Harry Greb could easily be ranked with SSR. Armstrong was a 3 division worldchamp in 3 different weightclasses and defended his belts for many years and fought everyone on his path, he fought SSR at an old age, a prime Armstrong is another ballgame. Harry Greb welterweight was the only boxer who fought black fighters in the 30's, had over 300 fights, and beat the undefeated lengend Gene Tuney and gave him his first and only loss: died at age 32. Sugar Ray Robinson stayed mostly on his division, so the term greatest is subjective here.

i bow my head in memory of him. he had 202 fights and fought more world champs than any other champ in history. it is said he was the most complete fighter in history

I strongly disagree. He was born in the perfect time which enabled him to become the legendary boxer he is known to be. He might not have been as good if he was born later on or he might not have been a boxer at all.

HISTORY.
To the writer right below me, at welterweight I agree with you but as a middleweight Robinson won and loss the middleweight title several times and his impeccable skills just slowed
down enough so these fighters at the middleweight division could make it interesting, like
Basilio, Lamotta and lots more but at welter whether he was born in 1800 or 2100 the same thing would have happened, nighty night!
