From what I see from the film, LaMotta was all over Cerdan. Cerdan left his left arm out straight under LaMotta's right armpit. When LaMotta threw a left hook he dropped his right shoulder trapping Cerdans left arm against Jake's right side. As Jake pivoted to the right to follow through on his left hook, Cerdan was pulled off balance. As far as Cerdan would have beat Jake if this didn't happen, that's all just talk. Only FACT is Jake won this fight. Two Great Fighters.

Cerdan is my favorite fighter of all-time. He was a true wonderwall of pugilistic genius. I think he wouldve beaten LaMotta had he not suffered the shoulder injury in round one. I also feel, without the slightest bit of hesitation, that Cerdan wouldve won the rematch with LaMotta and wouldve faired even better in a series with Robinson than LaMotta did. That being said, as I watch this video, to LaMotta's credit, he clearly shook Cerdan prior to hurling Cerdan to the floor. We must give credit.
Injury or not, this looks like a very tough fight between two great champions, and looked close before Marcel got hurt. LaMotta showed real class raising Cerdan's hand at the end of the fight.
Just watched an hour special on Marcel Cerdans life on a french TV station. Lamotta also told me in person, many years ago about his scheduled fight with Cerdan, the one they never had because of the plane crash. Would love to know how to send a mail to Lamotta for his story which for me, made this hour special a moving experience. MH

Nobody knows or have the ability to tell what would have happened if etc. Sport is full of surprises, it's what makes it a riveting thing to watch sometimes.
@xtrontruth Good assessment. Both fighters were brawlers 100%. LaMotta was the tougher fighter & better chin. He didn't hit you as hard each time. But those clean hooks that he does land look like they're from a Heavyweight. He wasn't fast, he wasn't smooth. But he had impeccable timing, or else he never could last even with that chin against a boxer like Sugar Ray Robinson. LaMotta's career & life is a testament to the human spirit. There hasn't been a man in the ring as tough as him.

Poor Cerdan; because of his rendered useless left shoulder all he could do was plod forward, try to stay close to LaMotta, and chop him with right hands. LaMotta is too good for that, but Cerdan had no choice. I can't imagine the pain Cerdan was going through but he fought an animal like LaMotta for 9 grueling rounds getting hit on that shoulder and everywhere else. Great win and fight by Jake. Two legends in every sense of the word. By the way, Jake still took some damn good shots from Marcel.

My point is that nobody really gives LaMotta credit for beating Cerdan but the fact of the matter is that even before the shoulder seperation LaMotta dominated Cerdan in the first round and jumped all over him. He deserves credit for that. I've never seen film of anybody bossing Cerdan like that for ANY amount of time.

I don't doubt that Cerdan strained his shoulder, but I've seen separated shoulders in football, and there's no way he could have gone 9 rounds with that. Especially, when in some rounds after his fall, I see him throwing combinations at LaMotta with both hands. I think he wanted to save face, as he realized he might even get Ko'd. I think Cerdan was overrated anyway.
Cerdan couldn't hold a candle to LaMotta's level of competition. Cerdan padded his record by fighting mostly European middleweights whereas Lamotta fought every legitimate welterweight and middleweight on the planet. It's also important to note that Cerdan's greatest victory was against an over the hill Tony Zale. LaMotta's greatest victory? He became the first boxer to defeat Sugar Ray Robinson and he gave Robinson hell in 5 other fights. Despite being a light puncher, LaMotta was able to succeed because he had a varied skill set and his intangibles were off the charts. He was a busy fighter, terrific body puncher, underrated defensive fighter, pesky jab, and one of the best chins in boxing history.

Maybe Cerdan was just biding his time in the first round in hopes that LaMotta would punch himself out. It was the only legitimate round in the fight because Cerdan fell and dislocated his left shoulder and could only strike with his right hand the rest of the way. Having said that LaMotta won that round big time.

I wrestled most of my life since 6 years old, and watch MMA often and cringe at the naively confident predictions-- when so many ways to win or lose is a fraction of a second away. I get a "most likely" thought right for some bouts but don't gamble on them haha...
Cerdan's final fight. Although he lost I think Cerdan was the better fighter. LaMotta had an iron chin and there was a lot of inside fighting and little clinching. Both men were good at that type of fighting.
He hurt Cerdan, no doubt, but it was obvious Cerdan's left was useless. It would've been a LOT closer if Marcel hadn't been injured. LaMotta still might've won, but it's not a sure thing at all. Both guys were impossibly tough and strong. Cerdan's skills were better but LaMotta's chin was made of granite and the dude could punch. Personally, I'd give the edge to Cerdan. But both were great.
Now that I finally saw this film i can see that the "experts' weren't all that great at describing the fight. I heard and read that La Motta "wrestled" Cerdan to the floor; here it's obvious that La Motta was throwing Cerdan off of a tie-up that La Motta didn't like. Cerdan tangled up and flopped down hard. I'm almost sure you are right lemonite1, many sources say the hand was broken, but how soon? His first punch? LaMotta was beating on him right away. Sometimes there is something to take into consideration when people break there hands on someone but not on many others... it hurt to punch LaMotta. I think Cerdan was a better boxer but i still think to much hype was put on statistics "so-and-so beat ---- so therefore they will beat ----" This mistake is made in the UFC all the time. @abbeykroeter I would think it would happen more in the UFC/MMA arena since there are more elements to the sport. That mistake you refer to is a reason why UFC is not a gambling sport, while Boxing will always be fueled by gambling.
Nobody ever knocked laMotta down as a middleweight. Cerdan was a welterweight, then a middleweight. He never had a devastating single punch. Against the 2nd rate European welterweights his chopping right hand landed, but he usually had to follow up a lot to finish them. Against top level middleweights Cerdan never scored a knockout (except against an obviously washed up Zale. Cerdan won decisions over Holman Williams, Georgie Abrams. He never would be able to stop LaMotta.

LaMotta too strong, in too good condition, and the wrong style for Cerdan. Cerdan lands his best right hand at 2:30 or so, and what does LaMotta do? Just hits him back. Cerdan's best punch (right hand) wasn't enough to hurt LaMotta.

Good God ferocious were fighters back then. Nowadays boxers are better trained, better conditioned, fitter, more skilful, agile and better footwork but not half the guile of these guys. Only an injury would stop these guys. The thought of their corners throwing in the towel, or the RSC, simply didn’t enter the equation. You just got up and got on with it, and gave it your all. And pro boxers had 8-14 fights per yr too, weren’t as protected as today, and if they lost it wouldn’t be the end of the world for them - they’d be back the next day. Funny how these guys could go 15 rounds and still want more. Putting us all to shame!

Why do you think I am questioning the fact that old school training is bad ? I never said such a thing. Sportsmen, nutritionists and trainers just took the best of old school training making it better by mixing it with new techniques and routines that proved to be better on a scientific fact. I agree that you become much more tough in boxing when you already have a tough life, and i'm not saying that lifting weights makes a you a better boxer. And trust me, i stepped in a ring. You are completely discarding the fact that the health of a boxer is incredibly important and that the "old school techniques" you're talking about like getting punched in the face voluntarily will make things worse and get you in trouble in the future, and the fact that professional sport overall has improved a lot in the last decade thanks to science. You can have old skills as much as you want, you won't last long in a boxing career if you are not precautious about your health. I completely respect the boxers of the 70s and the 80s and I agree that most of them today are pussies, but stop glorifying old school boxing when Hopkins and others could last longer than boxers before because they had trainers to keep them in shape, and not in a old school way. Time gives people the ability to understand more things about the sport, to perfect their style, and even if they are legends in the past that won't be surpassed so easily, I still say that today's boxing is maybe less tougher, but much more technical and skilled today. Just look at how boxers fought back then, and it's obvious to see how toughness was important because they weren't aware of the problems of getting hit a lot, and therefore didn't work the movements and the defense as much as today. Also, 80 years old trainer knows much more than a kid because he has experience, not because he knows the "old school" techniques. And it some trainers are not as good now because they don't question themselves, don't appreciate the new techniques and keep teaching these old school skills like it's the only way to win in boxing. Cuban boxing is incredibly good today and doesn't look like 70-80s boxing at all.

He was pushed over and injured. But that isn't a dislocated shoulder. Tough guys and tough fighters but not of today's standards. Cerdan had problems against some welters and I never understood why he suddenly got pushed up to Middle and became champion. Here he is being hit by nonsense. Where the guy's defence? Cerdan is my favorite fighter of all-time. He was a true wonderwall of pugilistic genius. I think he wouldve beaten LaMotta had he not suffered the shoulder injury in round one. I also feel, without the slightest bit of hesitation, that Cerdan wouldve won the rematch with LaMotta and wouldve faired even better in a series with Robinson than LaMotta did. That being said, as I watch this video, to LaMotta's credit, he clearly shook Cerdan prior to hurling Cerdan to the floor. We must give credit.

Injury or not, this looks like a very tough fight between two great champions, and looked close before Marcel got hurt. LaMotta showed real class raising Cerdan's hand at the end of the fight.
I am proud of Marcel, LaMotta needed 10 long rounds to beat Cerdan who could use only one arm since the beginning.
Just watched an hour special on Marcel Cerdans life on a french TV station. Lamotta also told me in person, many years ago about his scheduled fight with Cerdan, the one they never had because of the plane crash. Would love to know how to send a mail to Lamotta for his story which for me, made this hour special a moving experience. MH

Nobody knows or have the ability to tell what would have happened if etc. Sport is full of surprises, it's what makes it a riveting thing to watch sometimes.

Good assessment. Both fighters were brawlers 100%. LaMotta was the tougher fighter & better chin. He didn't hit you as hard each time. But those clean hooks that he does land look like they're from a Heavyweight.
He wasn't fast, he wasn't smooth. But he had impeccable timing, or else he never could last even with that chin against a boxer like Sugar Ray Robinson.
LaMotta's career & life is a testament to the human spirit. There hasn't been a man in the ring as tough as him.

Poor Cerdan; because of his rendered useless left shoulder all he could do was plod forward, try to stay close to LaMotta, and chop him with right hands. LaMotta is too good for that, but Cerdan had no choice. I can't imagine the pain Cerdan was going through but he fought an animal like LaMotta for 9 grueling rounds getting hit on that shoulder and everywhere else. Great win and fight by Jake. Two legends in every sense of the word. By the way, Jake still took some damn good shots from Marcel.

My point is that nobody really gives LaMotta credit for beating Cerdan but the fact of the matter is that even before the shoulder seperation LaMotta dominated Cerdan in the first round and jumped all over him. He deserves credit for that. I've never seen film of anybody bossing Cerdan like that for ANY amount of time.

I don't doubt that Cerdan strained his shoulder, but I've seen separated shoulders in football, and there's no way he could have gone 9 rounds with that. Especially, when in some rounds after his fall, I see him throwing combinations at LaMotta with both hands. I think he wanted to save face, as he realized he might even get Ko'd. I think Cerdan was overrated anyway.

Cerdan padded his record by fighting mostly European middleweights whereas Lamotta fought every legitimate welterweight and middleweight on the planet. Cerdan couldnt hurt LaMotta with his right hand because he was a one armed fighter.LaMotta knew he only needed to worry about the right hand, therefore he saw it coming all. night. Cerdan had a helluva left hook as well,but couldnt use it.Since Cerdan didnt have a two-fisted attack,he wasnt able to catch LaMotta with a punch LaMotta didnt see

Maybe Cerdan was just biding his time in the first round in hopes that LaMotta would punch himself out. It was the only legitimate round in the fight because Cerdan fell and dislocated his left shoulder and could only strike with his right hand the rest of the way. Having said that LaMotta won that round big time.

I wrestled most of my life since 6 years old, and watch MMA often and cringe at the naively confident predictions-- when so many ways to win or lose is a fraction of a second away. I get a "most likely" thought right for some bouts but don't gamble on them haha...

Cerdan's final fight. Although he lost I think Cerdan was the better fighter. LaMotta had an iron chin and there was a lot of inside fighting and little clinching. Both men were good at that type of fighting.
He hurt Cerdan, no doubt, but it was obvious Cerdan's left was useless. It would've been a LOT closer if Marcel hadn't been injured. LaMotta still might've won, but it's not a sure thing at all. Both guys were impossibly tough and strong. Cerdan's skills were better but LaMotta's chin was made of granite and the dude could punch. Personally, I'd give the edge to Cerdan. But both were great.
Now that I finally saw this film i can see that the "experts' weren't all that great at describing the fight. I heard and read that La Motta "wrestled" Cerdan to the floor; here it's obvious that La Motta was throwing Cerdan off of a tie-up that La Motta didn't like. Cerdan tangled up and flopped down hard. On paper Cerdan had the cred for sure, but in fighting you never know until the two styles actually clash. La Motta looked like he was hurting him in the 1st, Cerdan hanging on...

I'm almost sure you are right lemonite1, many sources say the hand was broken, but how soon? His first punch? LaMotta was beating on him right away. Sometimes there is something to take into consideration when people break there hands on someone but not on many others... it hurt to punch LaMotta. I think Cerdan was a better boxer but i still think to much hype was put on statistics "so-and-so beat ---- so therefore they will beat ----" This mistake is made in the UFC all the time. @abbeykroeter I would think it would happen more in the UFC/MMA arena since there are more elements to the sport. That mistake you refer to is a reason why UFC is not a gambling sport, while Boxing will always be fueled by gambling.

Nowadays boxers are better trained, better conditioned, fitter, more skilful, agile and better footwork but not half the guile of these guys. Only an injury would stop these guys. The thought of their corners throwing in the towel, or the RSC, simply didn’t enter the equation. You just got up and got on with it, and gave it your all. And pro boxers had 8-14 fights per yr too, weren’t as protected as today, and if they lost it wouldn’t be the end of the world for them - they’d be back the next day. Funny how these guys could go 15 rounds and still want more.

Why do you think I am questioning the fact that old school training is bad ? I never said such a thing. Sportsmen, nutritionists and trainers just took the best of old school training making it better by mixing it with new techniques and routines that proved to be better on a scientific fact.
I agree that you become much more tough in boxing when you already have a tough life, and i'm not saying that lifting weights makes a you a better boxer. And trust me, i stepped in a ring.
You are completely discarding the fact that the health of a boxer is incredibly important and that the "old school techniques" you're talking about like getting punched in the face voluntarily will make things worse and get you in trouble in the future, and the fact that professional sport overall has improved a lot in the last decade thanks to science.
You can have old skills as much as you want, you won't last long in a boxing career if you are not precautious about your health. I completely respect the boxers of the 70s and the 80s and I agree that most of them today are pussies, but stop glorifying old school boxing when Hopkins and others could last longer than boxers before because they had trainers to keep them in shape, and not in a old school way.
Time gives people the ability to understand more things about the sport, to perfect their style, and even if they are legends in the past that won't be surpassed so easily, I still say that today's boxing is maybe less tougher, but much more technical and skilled today. Just look at how boxers fought back then, and it's obvious to see how toughness was important because they weren't aware of the problems of getting hit a lot, and therefore didn't work the movements and the defense as much as today.
Also, 80 years old trainer knows much more than a kid because he has experience, not because he knows the "old school" techniques. And it some trainers are not as good now because they don't question themselves, don't appreciate the new techniques and keep teaching these old school skills like it's the only way to win in boxing. Cuban boxing is incredibly good today and doesn't look like 70-80s boxing at all.

Cerdan had problems against some welters and I never understood why he suddenly got pushed up to Middle and became champion. Here he is being hit by nonsense. Where the guy's defence? I also suspect Cerdan was better but there's no way to know. This fight reminds me of Whitaker vs James McGirt. Mcgirt was whupping Whitaker until his shoulder(rotator cuff) gave out.
