- Cuenca Ecuador's Cost of Living in 2023 hasn't changed much from inflation since we left in early 2021. We revisit with Tom who is living on Social Security with his wife Sheila in Cuenca Ecuador. This video is meant to show the quality of life you can experience as a couple on $1,600 a month in Cuenca Ecuador in 2023. Please visit our website to get more information: www.warrenjuli...
Ecuador is affordable, and the lifestyle you can have on a typical Social Security check of $1,800 a month for a single person or $2,800 for a couple is very attractive. Budgets vary, and many live in Cuenca Ecuador on much less than $1,800 and others far exceed $1,800. We've also met people living on under $1,000 so that is a possibility.

Oh, unbelievable quality of life with this budget. thank you Warren and Julie for sharing these experiences.
Thanks we hope you and your wife are well. 😁
Just amazing. Everything I've seen from this and others cost of living videos to JP and Amelia to various other travel videos make Ecuador seem like a real and affordable paradise. Obviously there are downsides as well but they don't seem too bad. I can't wait until October when a friend and I will be travelling there to check it out. Thanks!
Enjoy, Cuenca is a nice city.
Good to see Tom again! Congratulations to him and Shelia. We are loving Ecuador!
Wonderful!! Cuenca is a great city.
I’m from Cuenca, I miss it so much now that I’m studying in Italy. Once I get a remote job, I’ll be sure to go back ASAP. Nice to see you guys cover Cuenca again! I know you guys aren’t there but would you guys consider doing more videos regarding Cuenca with this format?
Thanks 😊 if we have volunteers we’d consider doing more like this 👍
What are you studying?
@@toddmaek5436 Computer Science, I could honestly study the same thing in Cuenca and I’ll have a much better experience
Wow wow wow! I truly hope i luck up like that some day. Yall have hit the jack pot with that place! 😊❤
It's a beautiful home.
Very nice. I missed this video for some reason. I am in Quito La Carolina Area of Ecuador and have an really nice apartment for 500.00 all included except electric. I prefer the city. Its like NYC but very cheap and walkable
Sounds great!
Thanks for this updated video on Tom. I was so sad when I heard his wife suddenly passed away shortly after they were embarking on their new journey. So happy he’s found love again with Sheila.
He has been incredibly blessed to have found two loves in a lifetime.
Louise's passing was very unexpected and tragic.
Another good video, thanks to Tom and Sheila! Updates were excellent, especially about the low inflation. Their new place and neighborhood are wonderful. And the progress and improvements here, especially after the pandemic, are truly amazing. We still maintain that Cuenca is a fabulous and financially sound location for a travel base!
We agree! It was exciting for us to get the tour of their place. We do miss all our dear friends.
Great update Warren and Julie! ExPat RoadMap linked to your original video with Tom because it was so comprehensive....this really adds to it. We will keep both videos posted on our curated page for Ecuador Cost of Living. Looking forward to more of your Ecuador Updates!
Awesome, thank you! We're glad it's useful. 😁We will look up the site.
Very informative and great people. Thank u
Thanks for watching and commenting 😁
I was in Ecuador on vacation 15 years ago. I was shocked by how much horn honking there was. To call it annoying is a huge understatement. Does Cuenca have the same issue?
It is a loud city. We often heard musical propane trucks and loud vehicles, but I guess we just became accustomed to it.
What a magnificent home!
It's very beautiful
You guys are the best!
Thanks 😁we appreciate you.
Greetings from Israel 🇮🇱, thanks for sharing video. I hope I can run into Tom at the SuperMaxi in Cuenca, El Vergel , near the stadium next month when I return to Ecuador. Safe travels!
Sounds great! I'm sure he would enjoy it.
Hi Folks, thank you for producing this content! I live in Arkansas currently but am very interested, considering the political and economical situations in the USA to go ahead and take the leap into life as an expat. At the moment i have income of around $2,000 a month working remotely by phone and internet that i am anle to maintain if i moved. Im white, 44, and a single mom with a 5 year old child. All healthy.
I have traveled all over South America as a youth with my parents and am familiar with the many cultures there so it wouldnt be a culture shock for me.
However, i see a LOT of videos on Expat living and they all say the same things and tend to leave the same fairly vital stuff out...
So my questions are about more technical stuff than just covering the costs of living. I want to better understand the process of renting once you get there for an American.
What kind of deposits are normal? In the states you typically have a security deposit equal to the first month's rent in addition to the first month rent OR you pay the first and last month of your lease upfront. What is typical in Ecuador both for renting apartments and renting houses.
Is there any kind of background check, credit check, or references you have to have to be approved there to rent?
So for myself personally, i have a completely clean criminal background, however i had cancer when i was 30 and a lot happened medically that destroyed my credit. I also have a broken lease from years ago moving away from a neighborhood where there was a gang dealing drugs. I left to protect my family, but here in the states im finding it nearly impossible to get accepted to rent anywhere because of the low credit score and the broken lease. Ive even offered multiple landlords here to pay 6 months down on a lease all upfront and they still rejected my application even though i have a clean federal background. I really need to find a place where i can raise my son and not have to worry whether or not a cold hearted corporation will look at numbers and decide not to rent to me. I am hoping that they dont have a similar system there but i dont know because no one ever covers things like that in these videos.
I am also interested in knowing if it is a good idea to offer to pay rent there far in advance at a nice place like the folks live in this video. An upscale place. Should i, if i can afford it, pay for half or all of a lease upfront to the landlord or is it a big risk to get the money stolen and asked to leave the property before the lease is up, assuming you havent actually done anything wrong of course, since they have already been paid?
So please do a video on HOW you rent a nice place like this, the process and what to expect. Applications needed, and all. And what might get you rejected. This will GREATLY help a lot of folks interested in actually becoming an expat there. Thanks!
We have a friend we could ask. She has rented for the long term for three years.
Ecuador is a political mess as well. Regarding renting: no background checks etc. Just a one-month deposit. It will be easy to find a home.
Is finding something like this down there the exception, or the rule? Is there a lot of availability, and do landlords tend to kick you out or regularly raise rents every year?
We found it quite easy to find a place. Our last place was found through a realtor, but FB groups are also a good way to find accommodations.
Thank you for all your inspiring content here, been a follower for a long time! I have a question regarding your AirBnB in Montenegro since your videos about Montenegro got me very close to investing over there. How do you feel about investing in real estate in Montenegro in 2023 considering the unstable political climate with the war in Russia etc. etc.? If you didn't own your apartment already, would you still feel like it's a good investment at this point? Would really appreciate your short quick thoughts on this!! Thank you regardless 🙏
Great question, here's my feelings on this. The old town of Kotor has a finite supply of homes and growing demand, so a pretty safe bet. This said we are currently listing our home for sale, and we will potentially buy a new property in Montenegro outside the fortress where we can have more outside area for the dogs and a larger living area. Do I think property value may fall? Potentially but I don't believe there's a huge bubble. With Portugal and Spain ending their Golden Visa program and Croatia joining Schengen, Montenegro may look attractive to some that didn't have it on their radars. Montenegro offers low taxes as well, long term there are reasons to feel positive about Montenegro, but always do your own research, I've been wrong before. There are quite a few Russian as and Ukrainian home owners. There is always the chance that some will sell when the war ends, some may stay as a safe place to live or keep them for rental income.
Good for them. Living well on a good budget.
Yes, they are very happy.
I'm extremely curious as to just how much real benefit - 'financially' - there really is for all those over 65 discounts they give everybody ? -- Going to the front of lines would be nice and actually needed many times if long waits are needed ! -- 50% OFF travel & movie discounts etc. is some benefit. Seems like modest savings perhaps but I'm sure appreciated by the native locals ?
The friends we have that are of that age enjoy the savings on public transportation especially the tranvia.
Thanks for this, love your home! I’m in El Centro in Cuenca, can you tell me what area you’re in?
Hopefully, Tom will answer this. I believe he mentioned the area in the video.
We live off of Paseo de sol Canares and Camilo Ponce. east of el Centro and just down the hill from Doce de Abril Mercado. there are two buses (the 13 and 50) that get you into el Centro or a $1:50 taxi ride. It clearly is NOT a gringo neighbor, which is nice. Very quiet and peaceful with anything you need only a short walk away.
Hi guys, by the way, I love Portugal the coast inland. I love the whole country. Anyway, I want to talk about your friends and Ecuador. My feeling is they do have a lovely home but you're in Ecuador and so Nice warm country. Why have such a large home with no outside space? I would definitely have found a home with a pool or at least a very nice outside space. That's just my thought why being Ecuador if you can't enjoy the outdoors right?
They enjoy the out of doors just exploring Cuenca. I think the layout was the most important thing for them.
Cuenca is too cold to have an outdoor swimming pool. Notice that many people don't have backyards. That's because many people cannot afford it. Besides that, many people wouldn't use their backyards because it's too cold to sit outside in the evening.
@@lvovodessa Oh really I had no idea it was too cold there to swim I thought it was a warm climate 🤔😅
Hahaha okay well thank you 👍
Nice!
Thanks!
Quick question, how about keeping up with medicare expenses in the states?
Several people we know do keep paying for Medicare.
Hey is it safe to come to Ecuador right now? The news makes it seem like there’s murderes everywhere and drug cartel are taking over. Ugh. We’ve been so excited to come visit for a trip next month but now we are second guessing the safety and wondering if it’s safe enough to go? We’re staying with sacha lodge and will only be in Quito briefly to drive through.
As far as we know things are still quite safe. We have many friends there who are remaining there and not concerned.
That is wayyyyyyy too fancy for us….but beautiful !
It's a very beautiful home.
What is the safety index in Ecuador? Always makes me think twice when I see a huge fence/gate with electric fence around the top.
It depends on the area. Cuenca, is pretty safe, as is Cotacachi, Vilcabamba, and Mindo, I’d be careful and vigilant in Guayaquil, Manta, and Quito they have a lot of bad areas.
It's the culture, it keeps the bad people out. Do you lock your car?
@@tomporemba1217 In Cuenca it's too unsafe to leave your car in the streets. In many other countries that isn't a problem at all.
How did they find this house?
A friend helped them.
I over used the word "lovely" ...sorry. Tom
Lol, I didn’t even notice.
You mentioned an urbanization. What does that mean? Is it a gated area with homes? You also mentioned you are east of Cuenca, which area are you near? thank you.
Is there a specific area where all American live? I’m a disabled Army Veteran thinking of moving to Cuenca. Any jobs for Americans?
Everyone we know in Cuenca lives in different parts of the city. We did several other videos on Cuenca. Please check out our playlist. Thank you for watching us.
Can you get your Social Security checks mailed to you there?
No, it would be best to have them direct deposited to your bank account in the United States.
What about crime and safety?
I just replied to your other video message on this, crime in Cuenca is usually petty, probably safer than most US cities. Avoid Guayaquil, Manta, or Quito without understanding the neighborhoods. Watch more of our Ecuador videos here, in many safety or crime is touched on. Ecuador Expat Life, Cost of Living and Adventures
