  • Billy Dee Williams's Harvey Dent was one of the biggest missed opportunities in the early Batman films. After being featured in Tim Burton's 1989 epic, he went missing in the sequel; Batman Returns. But what would have happened to the character if he showed up in this 1992 cult favorite? Rob is here to answer that question and much more in this episode of FanScription!

I've often wondered how things would have gone down if Tommy Lee Jones had been cast in the role for the '89 film. He wasn't quite established yet (this was before THE FUGITIVE), but I always thought it would be interesting to see how an obvious Texan (or a Southerner or some sort) fit into the very New York-like city of Gotham. Also remember that Jones co-starred in MEN IN BLACK, which I've always thought of as "one of the 'Tim Burton movies' Burton didn't direct," so to me it's plausible.
Billy Dee Williams is interesting, too. Honestly, I think he's the best live-action Harvey Dent thus far - sorry, Aaron Eckhart - but I don't think of him as a "Burton guy," which is ironic because apparently Tim was the one who chose him for the part. It's hard not to imagine Lando Calrissian when hearing his voice. I also think it was slightly absurd when "fake Billy Dee" (I'm not sure which one of you it was) referred to the Ice Princess as "Ice Princess." I mean, surely the woman had a real name, and in a serious legal context like that one Dent would have used it, no?

And then when Max is in the cage at the end, Penguin stares at him in the cage and he remembers his mom saying "Max, don't stare at your brother." and he realizes Max was his brother.

@@wjzav1971 I don't see Schumacher's style as all that different, at least when it comes to Batman. Both are surreal to an almost frightening degree, although Burton IS more subtle about it and thus more disturbing." I remember seeing BATMAN FOREVER in the theater and thinking, "This really isn't that different from the first two, except that it's more funny and kid-friendly." The part where the Riddler probes the two gun molls' minds and sees that they're thinking about Warner Brothers cartoons, for example, is something that Burton never would have shown.
By the way, it's always bothered me a bit that Batman - and Tim Burton - are so often described as "Gothic." It's partly because I feel the word cheapens Burton's style (it reminds me of kids at the mall during Halloween and S&M porn more than truly being an alienated individual) and partly because it's more a literary style than an art style. That said, BATMAN RETURNS does have some Gothic literary influences: the Penguin is clearly supposed to be the monster in Mary Shelley's FRANKENSTEIN, and his Arctic World Pavilion evokes the "pleasure dome with caves of ice" in Coleridge's "Kubla Khan." Bruce Wayne corresponds quite well to Lord Byron's "Manfred," the guilt-ridden aristocrat with superhuman powers; all that's missing is the incest angle. Even the power struggle between Max Shreck and Selina Kyle is straight out of William Godwin's novel CALEB WILLIAMS.

I don't see what the point would be. Catwoman is even more out of place here than she was in the real movie. And with a storyline that's also juggling Batman, the Penguin, Shreck, the Mayor, Dent, Dent's wife, the Ice Princess, Commissioner Gordon, and a whole gang of circus people so fascinating they almost deserve their own story, it's hard to tell exactly whom this movie is supposed to be about. There wouldn't be sympathy for Selina Kyle anymore, because it would all get transferred to Dent. Batman does a little more "Batman stuff," and Chip actually gets something to do, but otherwise this FanScription exposes even more blatantly the flaws this film always has had. Besides, if they took out Selina, they could focus on Harvey and Grace's romance all the more.

Not quite, I say. So, SO much could have been done so much better, as great as these films already are. I always felt uncomfortable with the Penguin's weird origin story, thought that Catwoman really didn't need to be in this film, and regret the fact that the Penguin lost the election, which could have set up an excellent cliffhanger for the third film. Plus, they could have planted the seeds of a return by the Joker! (No, I'm not kidding. Sure, he died, but "Batman Beyond" did it.)
Besides that, I've come up with some GREAT alternate casting ideas for BATMAN RETURNS. Danny DeVito would stay, but I'd want him to REALLY dial back the barbaric and gross stuff. And as enjoyable as Christopher Walken is, it's hard for me to imagine him being a beloved civic hero. I'd have preferred to see Chris Sarandon, one of my favorite actors and an excellent choice for Jack Skellington in THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, who had proven over the years that he could play a wonderful "gentleman villain."
And Selina Kyle just shouldn't have been in this movie. Too much of a distraction. My solution? Put another "Batman girl" in her place as the secretary - and NOT turn her into Catwoman. I've been thinking of Julie Madison, Bruce Wayne's girlfriend back in the 1940s comics and someone who still appears every now and then. She'd have a romance with another male character (so as not to distract Batman) while doing everything she could to uncover her boss's corruption. I'm picturing Nancy Travis, who was pretty much the standard innocent "girl next door" in Hollywood movies of the early and mid-'90s.
I've also imagined a different leader of the Red Triangle Circus Gang in place of the Organ Grinder. My idea is the late Russian actor Alexander Godunov (the main henchman for Hans Gruber in DIE HARD) as a blond lion tamer, reminiscent of Gunther Gebel-Williams.

I had a similar "What If" scenario for Batman Returns but my idea would be if it also had Killer Croc. Basically, it would have the same plot and arc, just with Killer Croc playing the role of the Penguin, trying to find his identity, using the circus freaks to weasel his way into society, and plot revenge on the people of Gotham. Penguin would also be in the film in the role of Shrek, as a greedy and corrupt businessman (Oswald Cobblepot), who uses is alius (Penguin) to commit crimes and uses his deformed flipper hands to convince Croc to join him. In the end, Croc would die from the toxins in the water, buried by his pet alligators, and Penguin would die from Catwoman via the shocking kiss. Edit: I would also have the half-brother thing with Penguin and Croc, both were born with deformities but Penguin was born within wedlock and Croc was a bastard of the help.

Batman Returns is one of my favorite comic book sequels and while I acknowledge the faults it has, the performances and overall execution really sell it. However, even I wish Billy Dee Williams had the chance to be Two-Face and after watching this, this would’ve been the perfect setup. We have Harvey set for descent into madness, Batman on the outs with Gotham, Selena on her last life, and an ominous, yet slightly hopeful ending. This would’ve made anticipation for the third film incredible and had Burton been able to do it, this could’ve been the definitive Batman trilogy. But I guess we make do with what we’ve got. I will say, though that this was a nice idea. Not too shabby, Rob. Not too shabby.

Awesome video. Adding Harvey fleshes out Bruce more and you potentially made it more personal on why Two-Face would resent Batman with his reputation being ruined. Love the beat where Bruce puts the bug on Shreck. The Dent-Batman rooftop scene is the Billy Dee Williams Dent & Keaton Batman meetup I never knew I wanted and Harvey showing up as the Phantom of the Opera at the masquerade (and the mask protecting his face in the explosion) just FITS this Burtonverse. This is also WAYY better than the actual script version that threw in the Max Shreck = Penguin's brother twist at the end without much exploration. Here, you actually contrast the two.
One correction is that Daniel Waters has debunked the rumor that Max Shreck was ever Harvey Dent: ruclips.net/video/BywJebS-BB8/видео.html
The "Dent was Shreck" rumor makes less sense anyway. Dent's tragic fall from grace into being Two-Face would be completely ruined if he was an abusive boss who attempts to murder his secretary.

Batman Returns is, bar none, my favorite comic book film of all time - so when I say that this overall meets with my approval, that's high praise.
However, while I'll frankly acknowledge the script is a little loose, and this does fill a few of those holes, one of the things I think works best about the film is its pacing - and I do think this makes things just a little bit cluttered. Personally, I don't WANT something as long as the Nolan films; a few minutes longer is one thing, but not much more than that. So here's MY version, using yours as a rough template.
The film starts out as it usually does: Penguin gets tossed into the sewer, etc. Here's where my first change comes in: the Max Shreck boardroom meeting.
Harvey is there, sitting next to the Mayor. He makes a big noise about how Max's power plant will never fly, and - here's a big one - when Selina timidly gives her 'I have a suggestion' line, and Max shoots her down, he speaks up for her:
Harvey: Hey, come on now, Max - an inside opinion can't hurt. Give the kid a chance.
Max: A chance? I've got a crowd waiting for me, Harvey.
Harvey: Let's say, two minutes worth of one. [Pulls out his coin] Call it.
    Max: Heads.
Harvey flips his coin, looks at it, shrugs apologetically at Selina. As they leave, Max shoots her a poisonous look.
The kidnap scene goes pretty much unchanged, but two things are altered. First, during the 'thanks for saving the day, Batman' bit, Harvey's there, too, and it's here where we get introduced to his fiancee - Grace, who had been somewhere else, runs up to him and starts making a fuss of him: 'Oh, honey, are you OK?' Harvey, a little embarrassed, introduces Bats to her, who awkwardly just kind of nods or something and roughly says 'Congratulations'. This reminds us, after his earlier confrontation with Selina, that Bruce Wayne is a lonely guy, and has difficulty balancing out his two sides.
Cut to the Penguin's lair, where Oswald is trying to blackmail Shreck. In this version, however, Max is proving a tougher nut to crack - he waves off all the standard stuff that's produced. Then the Penguin grins, and hands him an oversized Christmas card with a paper tucked inside it.
Max looks at the paper, which we don't see. His eyes widen. "Remember, Max - you flush it, I flaunt it." He gives in - but, notably, the Penguin takes the card back first.
Back at the office, Selina gets pushed out of a window, turns into Catwoman, etc. - the only difference is that she doesn't say she guessed his password; she's a little vague about precisely how she got the information. She kind of mumbles something about 'well, he said it would be OK'. We don't find out precisely who 'he' is, but Max evidently disagrees.
Everything is more or less as usual for a while after this, with a few key differences. During the 'let's make a Mayor' scene where Max introduces Oswald to his team, Oswald ominously reminds him not to push him too far, or he'll uncover his secret - 'I haven't mailed all my cards yet, Max' - but Max still manages to convince him to run. In the aftermath of the Red Triangle goons' rampage, Harvey is seen ranting on TV about how he'll prosecute the lot of them, and when Penguin proudly reveals his 'H-bomb on wheels' plan to Catwoman, she asks, briefly, 'where'd you get THAT?', referring to the Batmobile plans. Penguin just says he has his sources, and then the scene proceeds as usual.
In the aftermath of the Batmobile's hijacking/escape, just prior to the press conference, Harvey storms into his office, shouting that he's gone too far. It turns out that HE was the one who got the Batmobile plans, using his ins at City Hall (which, after all, works closely with the Batman - yes, it's a bit of a stretch, but at least it's something). Despite his loud public noises against Max and his corruption, he's been in his pocket all along - not by choice; the creep's got something on Grace (maybe something as simple as a hired gun following her around to shoot her if Harvey slips). Harvey says he's had enough of this, Max calmly states that Harvey's in no position to bargain, given that he was the one who slipped the power plant files to Selina, hoping she'd take him down. What he wants from him next is to dig up some extra dirt on the Penguin; the bird's been useful so far, but is proving a bit difficult to control (and, of course, he has dirt on HIM, but he's not going to tell Harvey that). Harvey feebly says something like 'flip you for it?', at which point we learn that his coin is two-headed (but not scarred - not yet). Which, of course, makes his initial scene with Selina seem somewhat different: since he knew how the coin-flip would go, it was all a ruse, meant to make everyone else think he was the good guy.
The reveal at the press conference goes more or less as usual - except Harvey's there, and, at a nod from Max, starts shouting for the Penguin's arrest. At the Max-querade Ball, Harvey and Grace are there, dancing, and she adoringly tells him that he's 'the best man she knows'. He mutters something about he has another side, she says 'well, we all have those', and leaves to get some punch, at which point he takes out his coin, flips it, and sighs to himself 'not like mine'.
Harvey is scarred during the explosion, as in your version. When Max persuades Penguin to take him instead of Chip, he says something like 'well, I guess I could settle for a SECOND son.' Harvey's not quite unconscious during all this, and through his good eye, he sees Max and the Penguin leave, and smiles feebly - he's free.
During the lead-up to the final showdown, we see a bandaged Harvey in hospital, demanding that a cop bring him 'the files on Shreck'. Also, while the Penguin is gleefully explaining his plans to Max, he casually puts the Christmas card down just out of his reach, saying something like 'won't need this anymore, now, will I?"
The 'kidnap the kids' plan is foiled by Batman as usual, and the Penguin Commandos are sent out - the only difference, in my version, is that first the Penguin snarls 'Right. Plan B'. So it's not something he just comes up with on the spur of the moment; it's a plan, just not one he thought he'd have to use. (Let's face it, the Commandos are awesome, and I didn't want to change much about them).
Finally, the showdown. Only difference here is that, just before Max gets his deadly kiss, he reveals what was in the Christmas card: a torn and soggy birth certificate, detailing his relationship to the Penguin. It's only HERE that we find out they're brothers; Max had known for years he had a brother who'd been dropped in the sewer, but had changed his name and flushed the evidence to protect his self-image. To a publicity-minded mogul like him, after all, image is everything, and his couldn't have withstood the direct connection to the Penguin - he could tell all along, after all, that the bird was going to crash and burn.
But, finally, it turns out that Oswald's 'won't need this anymore' line had a different meaning than we'd thought: he didn't need it because he'd already used it. Just prior to the launch of his kid-snatching scheme, he'd turned on the allies who'd betrayed him by sending all their information to the cops (in the case of the birth certificate, a photocopy), bringing the game of blackmail to a close, and giving the Penguin, in the end, a grim little bit of a victory. This implicates Harvey, too, of course, and he's last seen still in the hospital, being handcuffed to his bed. While Grace cries out in the hallway - will she leave him? - he takes his coin, and flips it. As in the Dark Knight, it's been scarred in the explosion, and it lands bad side up. Otherwise, the movie ends normally.
So there you have it. I think this version gives Harvey a bit of a dark side, emphasizing his two-faced nature (even if he is still a good man at heart), and keeps the 'family' angle as more of a motivator for the Max/Penguin relationship, rather than as a major plot point. I won't claim it's perfect or anything, but, well - it's how I'd do it.

Very impressive work on this story! Two-face is certainly one of my favorite Batman villains! I think I like the animated version best though because his character was so well crafted and written in those stories. However there is certainly no doubt in my mind that Billy Willaims was robbed of the opportunity to play this part in the Burton verse! You certainly have a very impressive imagination! Great job on this project!

It would have been a lot less dark and more interesting while having a African American version of Harvey Dent 🤔

It's Tim Burton and its part of the Gothic genre it would of found a way to be a dark story

Black Two Face might could have give Burton s Batman a Sam Raimi esque feel like what he to Spider MAN.

I like this take on the movie. It would lead to a good reason to make Batman Forever. But the question remains, how would Batman Forever be different, if Tim Burton was at the helm?

31:21 so your telling me his wife was there the whole time and no one had a issue with this open wound of a eye? Would definitely not be pg13 with that scene.

Funny enough, when Grace showed up at the party I started imagining a flirtation between her and Bruce, which could have made Harvey jealous. I thought that because they actually did that story in the comic book series THE BATMAN ADVENTURES (but AFTER Harvey had become Two-Face, and there it was all a misunderstanding set up by the Joker and Harley Quinn). Otherwise, what reason does Harvey have to turn bad in this? No one would applaud his arrest. He's a hero who busted two crooked politicians!
