Great video! Thanks for saving me $40-50 on buying one of those "fancy" paper kits. I tried making paper cartridges yesterday with coffee filters but no dowel rod, instead using a chopstick to push the filter into the center space of my cylinder to "form" the paper into the space and filling the form with the powder and the ball, and then (clumsily) gluing the top of the paper over the top of the ball. My cartridges ended up looking like deformed mummy wraps. I'm still going to shoot them though; I figure I will just tear out the bottom with my teeth before "spilling it" into the chamber since they're not treated to be flash paper, though. Your way makes a ton more sense. Thanks again!
You would think that these people selling "cartridge kits" wouldn't be charging gawd awful prices since they are basically something that can be dashed off with a 3D printer for mere pennies. The best and cheapest former I found after using (or borrowing) several is "Cap and Ball" channel's former. But unfortunately by the time you pay for postage from Hungary to the US it costs as much as the others trying to get rich off of them.
You don't need a "kit." You can make your own dowel with sandpaper and a drill. Just wear gloves. I burned my hand real good the first couple of experiments!
I load my pre natural DIY lubed ball and conicals and just natural fiber twine as it is less incline to cut any of my paper. I do everything from .44 to .69 still working on new stuff. all my BP consumables are DIY but for ONE, the priming compound for my caps is purchased in kit form and I may have this figured out with more tests. You mention that the filter paper you are using to make it "Flash paper" which is incorrect - flash paper is far more reactive and used by magicians. It is too unstable to use as a consumable cartridge. Any remaining ember would ignite "Flash Paper" and cause you injury. You are actually Nitrating the filter paper, which burns hot but far more slowly, and is far less sensitive to ignition; which of course will save your fingers and whatnots. The difference is very important as some people may mistake the two as interchangeable and may use commercially available "Flash Paper" and skip the home science fair experience. This would be tragic - So Please include some editing that warns against the use of "Flash Paper" Wheat past is also easy to make and superior to store bought glue sticks. Great video. Keep up the good work. Louis
Go to Walmart and buy an artist paint brush made of plastic and cut it at both ends so the large and small diameters are correct. You paper will never stick to the mandrill again.
What is the purpose of the thread? Is it to pack the powder? but then would it not create space between ball and powder? Yes I am new to paper cartridge making .
Good question. The thread helps keep everything separated and packed tight. It will not cause a dangerous space of air, as when the cartridge is loaded, it compresses as it is pushed down. This eliminates air space. Thanks for watching and please subscribe. -Madd Man
Great video. I have a 51 colt and it’s been years since I fired paper cartridges through her. One day I will get her a companion, it’s between walker or a dragoon. I see that’s a walker. Do u get the lever dropping down?
With the walker, use a flat needle file to rework the retaining latch to bring it down and flatten it. It will snap into place when raised and will not fall. Ever. -Madd Man
Thats not flash paper just kn03 saturated paper i guess it will work good but nitrocellulose is better just a couple more steps just as easy. But this guys method is definitely better for long term storage though maby thats why he does them that way.
I don't see why nitrating the paper is even necessary, when you mash it down with the loading lever it will tear open and allow the percussion cap to if it's as normal, no? The paper and crap will just fly out of the end.
@@BradTheMaddMan I make them using TrueWave end papers, they're for some hair BS. I get them at the beauty supply store, $2 for 1000 of them. Cheaper than cutting up coffee filters. I don't nitrate at all and never had any issue. They split open when loaded with the lever. I didn't come up with the End Papers idea, but it works great. They're sort of a similar texture and toughness as the filter material. Just throwing out there as something to maybe try out as it could be a time saver (skipping the nitrating and cutting of filter rectangles) and also cheaper.
Brad its Eric corresponded about a year ago on Royal enfield said I was going to by one well my 2018 was stolen insurance. Paid me 5000 for ifound a 2019 WITH 1,664 miles on it military green as well for 4500 are u riding enfield anymore? If not WHY? Eric
That's both terrible and awesome. I'm sorry you went through that ordeal, thieves are the worst. I am not riding RE anymore. As for why, I had a falling out with them after my failed marketing ride to Kentucky, when the top end of the new engine that was just put in crapped out and the crank shaft bent. They told me they would rebuild it, but I had issues with the engine in the bike since day one and it was in and out of the shop on 6 different occasions, so I wanted my money back to put toward a 650 twin, based on the lemon laws here in NC. They refused and actually got their attorneys involved. So I pretty much just washed my hands of them. It's a real shame to as I loved the brand with all my heart, sacrificed time, effort and even put myself in pain, riding thousands of miles for the marketing of the brand. But, what can you do? Thanks for watching -Maddman
You've done it my wayeee! I like diy methods and tools! Thanks young buck!!!!!!!
You are very welcome. Thank you very much for watching, I really appreciate it -Maddman

That's the same brand of round balls I use. The box is a bit of a bonus, because they can be used for a lot of things when you empty them!

It insures a faster ignition and the faster is pretty much all burned up -Maddman

exactly how much KNO3 did you add to to the water?
1/4 cup kno3 to 1 cup water works well. Whatever you have left over just let it evaporate and the kno3 crystals will be left if you need it.
Not really an exact science. Just add to the water until it almost completely disolves with just a litlle left in the bottom. -Madd Man
Saturated solution
I don't understand why the thread is needed.
To compact the powder and keep it behind the ball. -Madd Man
