Thanks, I love when people make very clear and concise tutorial videos without over complicating things. Great job. On another note, I love this laptop, however I think that separating the RAM like this is bad practice in general on ASUS's part. I'm sure they had their reasons for doing it though.
Regarding Dual Channel, you can mix RAM of 2 different sizes and they will still operate in Dual Channel. It just that lower part of higher ram will work in dual channel. So if you get 8+16GB = 24GB, the 8GB will work in dual channel and rest 8GB of 16GB will work in single channel. And I suggest, 24 GB (8+16) is definitely better than 16 (8+8).

@@miat789 Yes, you can upgrade it without issue. I literally just did it, booted up fine without even need to go into BIOS since I got Crucial memory with the same timings and speed. You will need to buy a 24GB module to get 32GB of memory since it has 8 GB onboard and only 1 slot.
The four screws on the lip of the laptop take shorter screws, except one of these corner screws (lower right as laptop is on its back) is longer than the other and it says in the manual that it is a "pop up screw" and doesn't get removed after it is loosened. I wasn't reading the manual so I was mystified by this. From reading comments, I made sure to have a new screwdriver so that if any screws were hard to get out, they wouldn't strip. So I get to the one really stuck screw and by putting moderate pressure directly down, I used pliers to turn the barrel of the screwdriver and that got it out. Everything else went fine. I paid $42 for 8G of Crucial (Micron) RAM, whereas I noticed some of these laptop manufacturers will charge as much as $90 for them to double the RAM on a laptop that comes with only 8G.

So I have just replaced the SSD in the G14 and there is a complication if your new SSD has a different sector size compared to the original that comes with the G14 (the original had 512 sectors, the new one had 4k sectors). Different sector sizes means that many standard utilities to clone your old drive to the new one wont work as they wont be able to copy from one to the other. I ended up having to create a Recovery Drive and effectively re-install Windows on to the new SSD to get it to work.

The ram that i want to use is the TeamGroup Elite 32GB DDR4-3200MHz Thank you in advance!
Hey, so you want 32GB in total? When you bought the 16GB Version, there should be 16GB soldered to the Board with another slot available like shown in the Video. So if you want a total of 32GB, you'd just have to get another 16GB RAM Module. But of course you can also just add 32GB of RAM, it should work fine as well.
Hi, there's an article on AnandTech saying that Asus has not enabled the ability for users to set the RAM as XMP on the G14, and hence is deferring to JEDEC which limits DDR4-3200 to 2666. Also there should be a 16GB soldered + 16GB replaceable SO-DIMM model out-of-factory, but that may come at a later date. Please advice if this is true? Thanks!
Hey, we also heard about the 16GB Onboard model, but have no information about when it will be available. About the RAM we will have to double check, but my Colleague in the video was very sure about the RAM Speed.
@@notebooksbilliger I went to the local ROG dealer here in Hong Kong today, and they CLAIM that the model with AniMe Matrix, 4900HS, 16+16GB RAM is a LIMITED edition (only 100 units GLOBALLY) that also comes with a free external webcam and backpack alongside the free Impact mouse. It only comes in gunmetal grey too. Costs HKD $17998 (USD $2322) and won't arrive until end of June here! Otherwise he CLAIMS the 32GB RAM config will not see the market ever again! Hard to believe!
So I have this laptop, and it freezes often. Total freeze, my screen turns into a still image, can only power off and nothing else. Do you think that could be a faulty SSD?

Great video! Do you know guys if Crucial ram (1x16gb) can be used with 3200mhz speed? I don't know if they required XMP support. Thanks for the video and thanks for your help!
Thanks for the easy to understand video. I’m looking to upgrade the NVMe drive with an XPG 8200 Pro. That model comes with a heat sink for the top facing side but leaves the bottom side exposed. Is that tacky/putty square that is used to secure the drive necessary? Should I be concerned with allowing that to contact the bare soldered components on the NVMe drive?
Hi i just purchased the G14. How do you figure what your ram is configured in(without opening it up) some newer g14 are being shipped 16gb and an open slot instead of the 8+8.
Hey, usually it ships with the RAM slot being unoccupied. But of course they may be differences in the exact configuration based on where you live. When in doubt, ask your shop or the asus support in your region.
That depends a bit on where you live and how the local laws and Asus' local warranty rules are. Usually RAM and SSD are so called user replacement parts, that you are allowed to change yourself.
Hey, it will work and the existing RAM will match your old RAM to work properly. But since it's a Ryzen Setup, we don't recommend slow RAM since AMD Ryzen profits massively from fast RAM. Memory is cheap right now, so maybe check if you can get some DDR4 3200MHz for cheap.
Yes very tight fit for a 8gb sabrent but it can be done i went with the 4gb sabrent about 840 on amazon with the faste read write speeds and will use the 1gb as a external storage with all my games
Thanks, I misunderstood a review I read, I thought I had to remove the MB to get at the ram slot. Now you may make a vid upgrading (changing) to Linux on this machine. I have the new 2021 model, very nice computer.
i heard if you upgrade one ram to 16 and keep the other one original 8gb, the pc will only use 16 all in all anyways. yeah you technically have 8 more in one slot, but whats the point in upgrading if it will not help the cpu to work faster? and if i were to put a 32 gb ram in one slot, i CAN access only those 32 BUT the pc wont go faster using just one.
Hey, for 2TB there are plenty of options like the WD SN750, Samsung PM981 or the regular Samsung EVO 970. The Sabrent Rocket Q is available with up to 4TB, but it costs almost as much as the midrange Zephyrus G14 ;)
Does this void your warranty? I want to upgrade mine once I get it but don't want to buy insurance if it'll be useless if i open it up and upgrade these 2 components.
I think Josh Cravey has a good video explaining that the soldered RAM is actually not a problem, because if you get a larger size of extra ram it will use 8GB of it as dual channel with the soldered RAM and the rest as single channel. And you probably won't benefit from more than 16GB of dual channel memory.
So if I get a 32gb stick and remove the 8gb stick, I'll have 40gb of RAM from the 8gb soildered in, but it's not going to help much more than the original 16gb?
@@BygSii no no no. You will have 40GB of ram which is plenty for almost anything you'd wanna do (if you are actually planning this make sure your laptop supports that much ram). But only 16GB of that ram would be dual channel. But dual channel is way over rated. It's awesome for gaming, but no games even use 16GB, so you're still good there. Dual channel in other applications is not that noticeable, especially not when you already have 16GB of it.
Hi Llin - it depends on the model- The 8GB-Version won't have a RAM stick in this slot, as the RAM is soldered onto the mainboard. So yes, the soldered RAM is kind of "invisible" :) In this video we are using the 16GB-Version, which already has a RAM-Stick in the only slot available.
notebooksbilliger.de just to confirm the 8GB model still has an available expansion slot for this so If I got the 8GB I could just buy another 8GB and be up to 16? Is the max 32gb? Sorry if basic question but I can’t see this on the ASU’s website.
Hi, thanks for the video :) I intend to upgrade my SSD for more storage, and I'm a bit new at this. Could I make a back up of my current SSD and just transfer it all back on the new one? Or would I have to start personalizing the PC from scratch, reinstall windows and everything? (I use the PC mostly for work and I have tons of different softwares that would take me days I don't have to redownload it all ^^')
Hey, you can of course just clone your current drive to the new one before swapping the drive itself. But you'll need an additional USB Case to do so. There are plenty of tutorials on youtube how to do so, look for "how to clone your SSD to a new one" or something like that. We sadly don't have an english version yet.
Hey, if you don't want a slower SSD than the preinstalled one, check the Samsung 970 EVO or the Western Digital SN750 SSD. Both are really fast and available with up to 2TB capacity. If you don't mind speed that much and want to go a bit more affordable, the Crucial P1 is a good choice.
If i buy this laptop with 8gb RAM do I have to buy another 8GB RAM or can I get a 16GB RAM and combine it with the soldered 8GB RAM for a total of 24 GB Ram?

When upgrading only the RAM do i need to do anything else beside
1. Turn off laptop & unbolt the screws
2. Plug RAM in
3. Put it back together and turn it back on
That is all right?
Basically, yes :)
I didn't realize that one of the RAM modules was built into the mainboard. I bought 32 gigs of gaming RAM. Will I be screwed matching the superior gaming stick of ram with the built in one? Their timing is different as the gaming RAM is CL16 as opposed to CL22
Did you figure this out? I'm trying to get 16gb ram to make it 24 total but he never it sound like I'll be making it run but as smooth or something
Can I use a ram with lower speed like 2400Mhz.....will it have some big impact??
(Indian Variant has only 8GB ram 3200Mhz and a slot to upgrade)
And does removing the back panel void the warranty
same question here bro.. also where can I get a 3200mhz stick in India
Mine is G14 GA401IU, are there additional slots for SSD and RAM?
If you buy one with only 8gb of ram is the ram in a 2 x4 config or would it be 1x8 and have the expansion slot open?
Hey, it's 8GB onboard then with a free expansion slot.
@@notebooksbilliger thank you so much!
@@notebooksbilliger Is there a limitation of 24GB in the free expansion slot ? Also could you recommend which brand model ram can we use ?
Hello my friend
Awesome video, it's very useful!!!
I want to make a question
I just purchased the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401IV with the 16gb Ram but i want to upgrade it with 32gb ram, is this impossible, or it will have problem?
The ram that i want to use is the TeamGroup Elite 32GB DDR4-3200MHz
Thank you in advance!
@@notebooksbilliger Umm, no. The 16gb model has 8gb soldered and 8gb in the so-dimm slot.
@@zs2001 There was a 16 + 0 SKU sold in some regions. But for most of us, the 32 GiB version is the only one with 16 GiB soldered.
is it possible to replace the original ssd with a 2 tb ssd ? sorry for the dumb question :)) i'm just afraid after i replace it doesn't work
yes. should work. some custom models i have seen with 4tb.
Does the Asus G14 support dual drives, SSD and HDD?
No space for a HDD. It's a small form factor laptop.
Hard to believe!
mactopia no way! Where can we place orders and when will they arrive?
Do this also work for the zephyrus M16?
So I have this laptop, and it freezes often. Total freeze, my screen turns into a still image, can only power off and nothing else. Do you think that could be a faulty SSD?
Does the upgrade actually perform better than 2x8 in dual channel?
Hey, the Zephyrus usually only runs in Single Channel mode, since there is only one module integrated.
Does upgrading ram in asus zephyrus g14 void the warranty...?
Is it really necessary to change the thermal paste? And also whats the lifespan of thermal paste?
Hey, usually with the modern compounds you don't need to change the thermal paste anytime soon. If you're still running the notebook in 5 years you can start to think about it :)
I wish you could also make a video on how to upgrade the ram in an Asus Zephyrus ROG G15.
so if 8gb (3200) of mine is soldered and the other 8 is removable, can I put a 32gb (also 3200) single and not lose any power?
I need to upgrade the RAM but I don't know what to get. I don't understand all the technicals in this video really. If I replace the 8GB RAM with 16GB do I need to buy a certain one? If anyone could help that would be great!
Thanks in advance :)
Did you figure this out? Also with the dual channel thing? I wanna buy a16gb stick to make it 24 total but idk if that'll do more harm than good
Would the HyperX Predator 32GB 3200MHz DDR4 CL16 DIMM XMP Single Stick HX432C16PB3/32, Black work as I look to switch the ram and can’t find the one you’re using ?
Great video! Do you know guys if Crucial ram (1x16gb) can be used with 3200mhz speed? I don't know if they required XMP support. Thanks for the video and thanks for your help!
you should just be able to use 3200mhz so-dim compatible ram
Does this void the warranty?
Thanks for the easy to understand video. I’m looking to upgrade the NVMe drive with an XPG 8200 Pro. That model comes with a heat sink for the top facing side but leaves the bottom side exposed. Is that tacky/putty square that is used to secure the drive necessary? Should I be concerned with allowing that to contact the bare soldered components on the NVMe drive?
hi, have you worked it out with the 8200 pro install? since it's double sided, does it actually fit with that wifi card down below?
Will it support PCle 4.0 2tb ssd?
Is it possible to install the "Crucial P2"?
The interface is "PCIe NVMe 3.1 x4"
Do you have any recommendations regarding the thermal pad for the SSD?
I want to get more space on my zephyrus g14 but I'm pretty scared to do this. Can this harm my computer?
Does a MP600 PRO LPX 2TB PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD fit?
Do you know what I should do when my G14 goes to BIOS all of a sudden after a blue screen and displays "No Storage Device Present"?
Panic😆
How much onboard ram your model have?
Hi, I have an zephyrus G, gu502-ga502. Csn I upgrade it at all?
Is there a limit to how much you can upgrade the SSD to? 2TB, 4TB etc?
Hey, not really - the only limit is the size of available M.2 2280 SSDs.
Thanks for the reply! Can you please elaborate? If I go to Crucial’s website and buy one of the SSD’s there, will they work?
Hi i just purchased the G14. How do you figure what your ram is configured in(without opening it up) some newer g14 are being shipped 16gb and an open slot instead of the 8+8.
Hey, usually it ships with the RAM slot being unoccupied. But of course they may be differences in the exact configuration based on where you live. When in doubt, ask your shop or the asus support in your region.
Thank you mate. Clear information. Keep up your works :D
Will you void the warranty if you upgrade either component?
That depends a bit on where you live and how the local laws and Asus' local warranty rules are. Usually RAM and SSD are so called user replacement parts, that you are allowed to change yourself.
What screwdriver should I use?
Hi, for RAM upgrade, will it match with a DDR4 2133MHz from an old laptop?
Hey, it will work and the existing RAM will match your old RAM to work properly. But since it's a Ryzen Setup, we don't recommend slow RAM since AMD Ryzen profits massively from fast RAM. Memory is cheap right now, so maybe check if you can get some DDR4 3200MHz for cheap.
Any chance this laptop would fit double sided NVMe? Seems a bit tight with the wifi module below along with space for another SSD.
Yes very tight fit for a 8gb sabrent but it can be done i went with the 4gb sabrent about 840 on amazon with the faste read write speeds and will use the 1gb as a external storage with all my games
@@hectorcolon3053 hi, you mean 4TB. did you reuse the thermal pads or just run exposed?
whats the max I can replace the removable RAM and still retain dual channel?
The soldered RAM is 8GB, so 8GB... Totalling up to 16GB
Thanks, I misunderstood a review I read, I thought I had to remove the MB to get at the ram slot. Now you may make a vid upgrading (changing) to Linux on this machine. I have the new 2021 model, very nice computer.
Can you change the 1650ti to 1660ti version
I would like to upgrade my Asus ZenBook from 16 GB to 32 GB. Is that possible? Thank you
Im planning to upgrade. Can a 16gb ram stick with 2666 speed is compatible? Or no? I'm a beginner. Thanks.
Hey, yes it will work. For best results you might wanna get a 16GB Module with 3200mhz.
Thank you.
Do I need to disconnect the connector from the battery before upgrading RAM?
Hey, you can do that to be absolutely safe, but as long as you're carefull you shouldn't have to do so.
just unplug it lmfao
How many SSD slots are there in Zephyrus G14
i heard if you upgrade one ram to 16 and keep the other one original 8gb, the pc will only use 16 all in all anyways. yeah you technically have 8 more in one slot, but whats the point in upgrading if it will not help the cpu to work faster? and if i were to put a 32 gb ram in one slot, i CAN access only those 32 BUT the pc wont go faster using just one.
hi can you give me the example best brand storage of 2 tb or bigger for this g14.. im thinking of making it dual booting with linux
Hey, for 2TB there are plenty of options like the WD SN750, Samsung PM981 or the regular Samsung EVO 970. The Sabrent Rocket Q is available with up to 4TB, but it costs almost as much as the midrange Zephyrus G14 ;)
@@notebooksbilliger thank you very much.. i had already ordered samsung 970 evo plus 2tb.. seems like a good device
I'm a little bit confused. Is that memory slot should be empty for a brand new g14? which means the soldered memory is actually invisible?
Hi Llin - it depends on the model- The 8GB-Version won't have a RAM stick in this slot, as the RAM is soldered onto the mainboard.
So yes, the soldered RAM is kind of "invisible" :)
In this video we are using the 16GB-Version, which already has a RAM-Stick in the only slot available.
@@notebooksbilliger Now I get it. 16GB has a dual channel, so it's 24 GB at most. Thanks for your explanation.
notebooksbilliger.de just to confirm the 8GB model still has an available expansion slot for this so If I got the 8GB I could just buy another 8GB and be up to 16? Is the max 32gb? Sorry if basic question but I can’t see this on the ASU’s website.
Edmundo studios I believe a this is true, did you end up doing it?
Anurag Reggie not got the laptop but was just interested. I don’t know if this is the case.
Hey guys! Can i upgrade my zephyrus g14 ryzen 7 rtx2060 up to ryzen 9? by changing mother board? Please help!!!!
is it possible to add a copper bar thing to the ssd
@@notebooksbilliger Thank you very much!
Can someone recommend a good upgrade for the ssd? looking for 1tb expansion but not sure which model would be compatible..
@notebooksbilliger would a 990 work as well?
Nice information! Thanks.
No 2.5 inch SSD/HDD slot in this laptop?
i wanna swap the ssd because my r9 rtx 2060 model came with only 512gb ssd but if i swap it im pretty sure i lose my 2 year warranty
what happens if you don't use a ddr4 3200mhz stick of RAM?
Please do the tutorial for Zephyrus S17!
If i buy this laptop with 8gb RAM do I have to buy another 8GB RAM or can I get a 16GB RAM and combine it with the soldered 8GB RAM for a total of 24 GB Ram?
Hey, you can do both :) It will work either way.
Does the base model with 8gb ram only have that memory on the board? If so is the dimm slot empty?
Hey, yes, the 8GB model has the 8GB soldered to the mainboard so the slot is free.
@@notebooksbilliger yes it does. Just bought a g14 it's pretty good. Definitely would benefit from dual channel RAM. Purchasing more soon! Thanks for the reply
can we add extra graphics card in this lap..??? reply me pls
Hey, no, that's not possible.
