Hi Donald! My dad was the original engineer (at Hughes Aircraft Co) who designed the wings & control surfaces for the AIM 54C Missile (Phoenix) and was deeply involved in it's development & live fire testing off San Miguel Islands.... My wife & myself both worked at HAC... she worked on the F14, F15, F16, F18, F/A18 and B2 programs....... the work was incredible! The performance & systems (much of which is still classified & in use today) was something that few would believe and we were all PROUD OF!!!!!!!

Unfortunately the cost to maintain and upgrade them was too much for the Navy so they moved on. The F-35, IMO, is a waste. Short range and thin skinned. Will not last long in a contested environment.

The epitome in every way of American muscle. They just look like they're going fast standing still, and have the same "COME GIT SOME" that classic muscle cars had during their heyday.

I was at Votech not a few miles away when this formation flew overhead. I actually stopped what I was doing until I couldn't see them anymore. And the thought that this was the last time I would ever hear the sound of a tomcat's engine ever again crossed my mind. That this would be the last time I would ever see anything like this in person. My teacher got annoyed with me, but didn't really say anything. I still live and work around Oceana and to this day have never heard a sound quite like that of the F-14. They were amazing planes and I am happy I got to catch a glimpse of this historic homecoming.

Too many moving parts? Look at the F-35 transformer jet.
The airframes were old, leading to more and more maintenance hours, most of which are looking for stressfractures. Newer tech also was not integrated, leading to hardpoints being taken up for ecm or targeting or certain radar modes or what have you.
It was older computersystems and old as. Rebuild on a new airframe and put in new systems and good to go. Iran could do it, glass cockpits in its Tomcats.

I was there when this happened. I was at VFA-131 a hornet squadron. But VF-143 was part of our carrier group. Good times.

They were always spotted back aft t.o.w. tail overwater they're big aircraft and especially on the older decks they really hung out over the catwalks. The tractor king had to be good to spot a tomcat!

Absolutely disgusting that this country allowed not even one to remain in flying condition for air shows. How many of the gorgeous Tomcats in this video got shredded to pieces? Most. That’s horrible.

It was the most loved fighter jet by the Navy pilots, they were extremely disappointed when the word came the F14 Tom Cat no longer needed. It all had to do with politics. Grumman's was known for thier avionics that they built into thier fighter jets, they were constantly improving the airplane. It's a shame they are gone. I still believe that an F14 Tom Xat can still take on our current F35 & F22 and still kick ass.

I love the F-14 Tomcat myself but it only shot down 4-5 aircraft in its operational history (American). That isn't really that much. The Iranian F-14s have shot down over 100, so they are definitely the most effective with the F-14.

The Tomcat from the last frame with the flag #AJ105 Bureau #159619 is down in Lakeland Florida at the Florida Air Museum. It was in it's original condition until this summer when they renovated it. I liked it better the original beat up way. Still a badass nonetheless.

Saw on a program on the retiring of the A-6. One of the pilots said (can't remember exactly who) whoever makes the decision, decided that he was too old to transition to another type of aircraft and would have to leave the Navy. Seems like a waste and how many of these pilots would fall by the wayside?

we miss u baby...hope to see u fly again one day, miss seeing u guys fly over the skys, aww being a kid with a dad in the navy was great...this video is great all those beautiful plans flying at once so reminds me off watch the afterburners and thunder that came from them.....crazy to think that the big reason this plan was decommissioned was the cost to keep them going, and then just to turn around and spend billions on new planes that cant match the f14, should have just revised the f14 instead of screwing around with the f-22 and the f-35.....any the f-18 is passing the 30 yr mark so when will the take it out to.....we love u and miss u riping up the sky and protecting the sky above....r.i.p
