My current pup was abandoned at 6 years old and spent 6 months at a shelter. Now she has severe separation anxiety. She screams/howls the entire time we're gone and scratches at the doors and windows.
Bruce’s cries just break my heart. My new rescue dog has separation anxiety too but she’s gotten much better recently. She was in a similar situation to Bruce and it just hits so close to home.
I think a second dog might calm him down. Loneliness is awful for them I always have another well adjusted dog to leave a new dog with and there is never any worries. 🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕

Absolutely! Most mammals are hard wired to live in social groups and to belong. The problem for Bruce (and for humans who behave like this) is that this sort of behaviour doesn't lead to mutually loving relationships. The behaviour is so stressful for the other party that it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy - dogs and people who act like this do tend to end up alone because their behaviour is so distressing for others. And then they end up eliciting the very behaviours they are trying so desperately to avoid. It's just a thought..
Hi I know this is random but this is my uncle and aunts dog the couple their and Bruce is much better now and is very good and happy and they have figured out many helpful ways to be able to go to work and leave the house
Dogs are smart and sensitive. Giving them lots of praise will make them feel happy and secure. When your dog does something good, praise him a little too loudly. This will make your dog feel affectionate, which will fill his heart and help him grow up healthy. It is also important to enjoy walks with your dog. A walk is an important opportunity to experience many things together with your dog. Talk to your dog, give him treats while walking, make eye contact, etc., and deepen your relationship with your dog by communicating with him.
Tone and pitch is important. Dogs may not speak english but they pick up on speech patterns. For example the tone or pitch of your voice when you are angry, happy, excited etc. When you praise dogs for doing something well its not about volume its actually more about pitch. Speak in a higher voice as you may dog when youre happy and your dog will recognise that.
my dog has this severe separation anxiety. imagine, you just go to you bathroom or bedroom, then once you come out, he's crying and very excited and running crazy like you don't see each other for a year.
My dog is holding me hostage. I live in an apartment. The people below me complained because they think I'm the one who told the landlord that they had a pit bull.
This is my recuse dog to a T. He was year old when we got him and already been through 4 families. He would go completely insane when we would leave him. Chewing up walls and window blinds and everything else. So we tried leaving him outside, every single time he would find a way to get out. Jumping fences, digging holes, literally climbing the fence. It was awful and so so sad. We had no idea how to handle so we literally would take him everywhere with us. He was okay if we left him in the car for a bit but ya know, it was absolutely impossible to really do anything. He had already been through so many families I knew we had to just deal with it or it wouldn't end well for our sweet boy. Here we are, 4 years later and he's calmed down a lot... which I believe has a lot to do with the fact that we did take him everywhere with us and that last year we got him a younger sister to tire him out. Bruce is literally my boy Axel 4 years ago. Even looks like him lol good luck!
My puppy is like this and we are his only family since 8 Wks but he destroys everything, poops on everything barks non stop… we also have to take him everywhere with us, even waiting in the car is traumatic for him, im really praying for a miracle
@Karen Coy did getting him a sister solve the issue? Our dog is super well trained But apparently he howls if we leave him alone by himself. We found out from our neighbors.
We had to do that with our rescue it took about six months but we didn’t need medication thank God the vet showed us how to do everything and now we can leave for eight hours at a time
As someone who has separation anxiety, it is terrifying when someone you love goes somewhere. You think they’re never coming back. I feel so horrible for Bruce because I know that it’s caused my trauma so he must have gone through something horrible
@@hothotheat3000 Ive been doing a lot better lately. And yes, you’re right. It’s not fair on anyone else but it’s also really really hard to stop myself from stressing.
Our neighbor's dog jumped through a second-story window after she left for work one day. From that point on we babysat him until she came home from work. I felt so bad for him, but after they moved they took him to a vet for ideas to help him adjust. Until I met him, I had never seen a dog with a pacifier, but he used one.

Bruce is looking for a way in. I had a 2 year old rescue Rhodesian/pit mix(the best dog ever) 10 years ago he had such separation anxiety. We had to install dog door for access to what makes the him comfortable and happy-- the best was my smell throughout the house along with his smells with treats it worked I had him over 13 years - I so miss him
I had a rescue chihuahua rat terrier mix but always left the tv on so would be comfortable even in hotel when traveling. And a tshirt or blanket with my scent on it for cuddling. Seemed to work. Plus plenty of toys and chew bones. However I know every case can be different. Thank you for caring for this baby and trying to help him. 😊😊😊😊👍👍🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
My neighbour has a little dog that barks and cries from the moment they leave, to the moment they return from work. It's truly horrible for all the neighbors because it's all day; after a while it makes you feel nauseous and so stressed out because it just won't stop. The disturbing thing is, they know it's separation anxiety but they like that it misses them so much, so they ignore it.
They’ll ignore it until someone takes matters into their own hands. In my old neighborhood, there was a noisy dog who barked nonstop. One day, the owners came home to find him dead in the backyard. He’d been poisoned with burger patties laced with antifreeze. No one was arrested.
Bruce is absolutely gorgeous!!! I'm so glad he has such wonderful & loving parents!!! & Thank you for rescuing him & your commitment & dedication to Beautiful Bruce!!! ❤❤❤ 🇭🇲🇭🇲🇭🇲
My brother's dog had speration anxiety for years. When he first got him and my brother and I left him alone with my two dogs and we thought he'd be ok. Wrong. When we got back he had messed up the dining room by knocking plants off the window sill, things off the table etc. Finally we took him with us and left my two at home which wasn't fair to them. Finally at the age of 7 we left the 3 of them at home because we had a family wedding to go to. We blocked him in my brother's bedroom and when we got back he was ok and so was the house. He'd slept on my brother's bed the whole time. Now we leave them all home but for one problem, they use the place as a bathroom even though we take them out before we leave. I think all dogs have speration anxiety to some level, some are just worse than others. Give them something that has your scent on it might be helpful too. God bless.
Believe it or not the cat we rescued 4 years ago (she was severely abused and undernourished, she still has issues with food) would make just as distressing noises when I would go to school everyday. My mom had surgery and had to suffer listening her cry for those 6 months whenever I went to school eventually I figured I should leave something that smells like me for her on the couch which helped but only time lessoned her anxiety. She learnt that she would not be abandoned when we left.
I don't think anyone can even comprehend this poor little Angel's deepest fear that's so real to him. Its extremely heartbreaking for him yes difficult for the parents but to that poor precious angel its extremely gut Wrenching. So sad. I've experienced this personally and with my own little precious soulmates. Too heartbreaking and needs understanding on a level very few do understand or can even imagine. Poor precious angel please help him heal. His soul and spirit and heart and mind need healing and so much love and only the right parents can achieve this.🐾💞🐾
Our wire haired pointer x lab actually makes a LOT more noise. Even if we leave to go to the toilet!! He's never been left since we got him as a puppy, he's worse with my husband. When my husband is away he's a different dog. No whining, howling etc.
The best way to deal with this is to change the routine. He knows exactly when they’re going out because he knows his owners routine. When he sees his owners getting their coats on and getting their bags/keys/shoes etc... he knows they are going to leave the house soon and because of that his anxiety starts building up and up. Change it up. Grab your keys, bag and coat, walk to the door and then sit back down. Do it over and over again until the dog has little to no reaction. Then start with the desensitisation of opening the door, then leaving the house for a minute and walking back in. Keep doing this. It helps him know that, just because his owners are getting ready, doesn’t mean they will actually leave the house. Instead of him knowing 100% that they’re leaving the house, he’ll instead think that there’s other outcomes to them getting ready such as sitting down on the sofa with him.
@Without a crystal ball sucks Shesuckshairydick Mate, I don’t know why you got so worked up over some simple advice but you need to calm down. I didn’t write it for individuals, like yourself, that already know this. I wrote this for people who aren’t aware of this training technique and are looking for help with their anxious dog(s).
The best way is to put the dog in a crate with a Kong toy with frozen food in it, because it doesn’t seem so empty to the dog and the dog has some snacks to much on. Maybe a tv in the other room so that the dog thinks that you are just in the other room.
Idk if you’re looking for advice but I’d really recommend to change up your routine for whenever you’re about to leave. Make sure you don’t do things in a particular order because that’s when your cat would start to get anxious. Also play with him/her for as long as possible before you leave so he/she is tired and can sleep through your time away. There’s also things like feliway that can help, it’s cat hormones that have a calming effect on cats. Some people like to use it on the create they take to the vet for example. Also, have you considered getting a second cat?
My dog has this bad anxiety, a part of it comes from me as well as other members I'm around. I have tried to separate myself from my pup since I first got him, however my dad is a softy and hated hearing a puppy whine, so he caved in and let my pup out when he whines in his cage... some time goes by and it's so hard to even go into another room without my dog following me or other people. I don't have the luxury to leave anywhere that isn't dog friendly, he just barks, and barks and stresses himself to the point where he throws up. Even putting my socks, grabbing my keys, getting dressed even for the day are all triggers, and then it takes him a long while to calm down even if I don't go out. I cage him if I have to leave, and if I do I'm not gone for long(no longer than an hour) 😔. I'm mad at myself for letting it get this bad, I am part of the problem but can change it as well. I've tried to explain to my vet just how bad it is but they don't seem to understand. I am lost, feeling hopeless as each day goes by and want to know how I can help my pup better with this bad anxiety.
Dogs are like little children. You need a lot of love but you also need to learn to listen. You have to spend a lot of time and patience, but it's worth it. They give you back the love and let no one in the lurch. You care for them and they protect and respect you👍
why are you writing to me. Leave it alone, if you don't like it, stop reading it. Please read from others. You don't like it ok read something else. Get a book and maybe read it now and leave me alone
I applaud them for addressing this instead of forcing their neighbors to hear this noise constantly. That is negligent ownership and leads to resentment and, worst case scenario, the neighbors filing complaints or even poisoning him to get peace back. The neighbors must detest this dog.
I'm over shows that always show the client at the start of their journey. I need to see the end part of the journey. I've tried the protocols for fixing separation anxiety and everytime they fall down because they don't fit in with real life. Mostly just the very rich could afford to fix this issue. Still I will persevere. I have to pay a lot of money (which I don't have) for pet sitters all the time.
My girl had separation anxiety like this too after I rescued her. So I learned everything I could about that. We got a personal coach, had weekly obedience, had approximately 3h of exercise a day (an hour and a half just in the morning before I would leave for work) and went to a behaviorist to help us. We tried medication too but that was a terrible mistake as it changed her personality completely and she was starting to become less sociable. The worse about this kind of medication is that you can't stop immediately either if something goes wrong...you have to gradually decrease the dose until you can stop. I would have tried the behavioral techniques BEFORE putting him on any kind of medication, leaving that for a last resort only solution.
So have you found a solution? Just got my boy 3 days ago and he's doing this. Cries all day, doesn't destroy anything, but just whines and cries for hours and I'm scared the neighbors might report us. I already tire him out with 3 miles minimum of walking a day (he's only 14 lbs). But I just don't know what to do. i tried frozen Kong, puzzle treats, everything he just doesn't care about them the moment I leave
@@deSeriosa yes, I did. She did calm down after a while. I lost her last december to cancer by the way. I ended up crating her on a coach recommendation. I tought her the crate was her personal and safe space. I went in there with her, I fed her in there. After a few days she started going in on her own with the door open. I crated her during the night too but never when I was at home awake and I came back home during my lunch break to get her out for a 45min walk. It took commitment but it worked. A few weeks later i started leaving the door open and I would often find her in there when I got back home. I also learned to ignore her while leaving and coming back home. I did pretend-leave (you go in and out a loooot of times and increase the time while you're out all the time. I even skyped while out at some point. Something worked because she became the best girl ever. Good luck to you!
@@sarat.1744 Thank you for your response and sorry for your loss. I will try crate training because previous owner didn't crate train him and do more pretend-leave.
My brother got a dog that was just like that.. I hat to tell him that either they had to give him a new home, or put him down.. Because in my country doctors aint giving any medication for it, and it was very very clear that you couldnt leave the dog alone just for two secs. He would be screaming like crazy.. To be in SO much fear I dont think is fair to anyone
Hi this is random but this is my uncle and aunts dog I just thought I’d say but he is so much better now and no offence he doesn’t use anything she suggested he’s very good
It wouldn't hurt if the parents of bruce were told to walk him for a very long time before they leave. This would tired him out. I heard the male say he runs, well that's a good time to take the dog for a good run
My Bully has anxiety like this. I can’t even let her and my Chaweenie out in the yard and walk back inside without her starting to scream like this. But it’s not just when she’s anxious! She screams like that when she’s excited too! She’s never been mistreated. We’ve had her since she was 5 weeks old. She’s the only girl other than me in the house so she is beyond spoiled! A complete princess!
5 weeks? Was she a rescue without a mom? Otherwise 5 weeks is way too early to be taken away from momma dog and siblings and might be the cause of her anxiety issues. In most european countries the law states that the puppies has to be 8 weeks old before seperating from momma dog. In the Netherlands I believe it's even 10 weeks.
Wow! I would not have the patience with a dog like that. Also, not sure if this "treatment" will work as they don't show the outcome. Sure, putting him on drugs to mellow him out will do something, but if I were those owners, I would have lost my patience long ago and put a muzzle on him (one of those velcro ones) to keep him from barking/howling like that. I think a much more effective strategy would be to let him howl and wait for a break in the noise, walking in the moment he's quiet. If he learns to associate him behaving quietly with people returning, that might stop the howling. Just my two cents. As the doctor says, unwanted behaviour should not be rewarded with attention either.
I mean that means ya don’t need a dog any dog can turn out like this it’s not not the dogs fault it’s the owner lack of exercise lack of mental stimulation lack of daily routines when you get a animal your lifestyle changes especially on breeds who needs a dog if you just going to look at it or sit around all day then get a breed that’s not as active but anyway like I said it’s the owners fault and they eventually got the help from a professional
I wonder if finding a lonely shut-in or elderly person to babysit him during the day would help? We reserve special treats to give our dog only for when we leave: bits of roasted chicken and broth frozen inside a Kong toy.
We had neighbors that had a dog like that and it was annoying as crap! Especially at night when you’re trying to sleep! Thankfully the dog finally stopped!!
I don't think they have a suitable yard for the dog..it's a small deck. No grass.. he doesn't want to stay outside there's nothing stimulating. He needs a friend.
Finally, an answer! Oh my goodness, my dog is soooo latched to my leg. I do 2-3 hr walks with him and it didn't get better. I tried to train him, but the pandemic messed it up, as well as me being sick. I was basically messed up fo 2 yrs, which kept me home, and now im a prisoner 😭 Idk how to fix this. I love my dog; think someone abandoned him as a puppy. He had very specific fears. I will try this ritual thing; hope it works 💝🦮🥰
How ironic that this dog looks a lot like that dog next door-gray spots on her body and ears and a patch of dark over the same eye. That dog next door acts like this as well. I have suspected this since they first brought that dog home it had separation anxiety. But I know they aren't going to do anything to help this dog. Those people don't deserve to have any dog.

@Without a crystal ball sucks Shesuckshairydick I don’t even have a partner I’ve been a dog trainer for the past 4 years thanks😂 you should calm down!

That's my dog right there!!!
my cat have serperation anxiety and just meows whenever i leave the room nonstop until i come back
Idk if you’re looking for advice but I’d really recommend to change up your routine for whenever you’re about to leave.
It is sad to see her so distraught. Training and that mat will slowly solve it all.
Dogs are like little children. You need a lot of love but you also need to learn to listen. You have to spend a lot of time and patience, but it's worth it. They give you back the love and let no one in the lurch. You care for them and they protect and respect you👍
@Without a crystal ball sucks Shesuckshairydick what do you think how I think about what you write. ... great, thank you. That was sarcasm.
why are you writing to me. Leave it alone, if you don't like it, stop reading it. Please read from others. You don't like it ok read something else. Get a book and maybe read it now and leave me alone
@Without a crystal ball sucks Shesuckshairydick I know it.
@Without a crystal ball sucks Shesuckshairydickjust leave it. Stop writing back. Because honestly I don't need it
Good for them because I’d be all set. That’s a lot
I applaud them for addressing this instead of forcing their neighbors to hear this noise constantly. That is negligent ownership and leads to resentment and, worst case scenario, the neighbors filing complaints or even poisoning him to get peace back. The neighbors must detest this dog.
Does anyone know how he is doing now ?
Beautiful cute 🥰
Can you imagine the poor neighbors?
Hope Bruce becomes less anxious over time and everyone is less stressed xx
My dog is not food motivated. 😢. What else helps?
Poor sweet Bruce. I would keep him next to me all the time. I know that would be the worst for him, but I would :(
Sickening
I'm over shows that always show the client at the start of their journey. I need to see the end part of the journey. I've tried the protocols for fixing separation anxiety and everytime they fall down because they don't fit in with real life. Mostly just the very rich could afford to fix this issue. Still I will persevere. I have to pay a lot of money (which I don't have) for pet sitters all the time.
My mom's dog is like this :(
My girl had separation anxiety like this too after I rescued her.
They really should have worked with a trainer long before this...glad they are getting help and are being so patient with him
They need a better yard also not a deck or a buddy for him
This is Chance from Homeward Bound
My brother got a dog that was just like that.. I hat to tell him that either they had to give him a new home, or put him down.. Because in my country doctors aint giving any medication for it, and it was very very clear that you couldnt leave the dog alone just for two secs. He would be screaming like crazy.. To be in SO much fear I dont think is fair to anyone
What do you recommend for dogs who are not driven by food ?
"Kate is using modern technology" XD XD XD
Great video
They make weighted vests for dogs with separation anxiety, I would highly suggest this for poor little Brucie💔
@@Neetia89 in America pups get taken from their momma at 5/6 weeks
@@delaneylamura6765 That's horrible 😭
@@Neetia89 according to the law, it’s 7 weeks but it is very common here that the pups are kept until 9-10 weeks yeah.
@@phoenixflamegames1 In the Netherlands?
In Denmark it's 8 weeks by law.
Poor puppy that would be so hard to have a dog that does that all the time I would just cry not knowing what to do well Dr Kate

Could Bruce not come along on runs? Good exercise for him and he wouldn't get so anxious.
My grandpa's new dog she has separation anxiety but he and my grandma don't care about it they don't want to give her medicine for it
He can sense a baby nearby.
Poor brucie.
I really believe that having another pet for Bruce to develop a relationship with is vital.
I’m the complete opposite to Bruce. Social anxiety
🤣🤣 me too 👍👍
"Remember. Not a fuss when you leave like I just did." -- Dr. Kate
Bruce could use some toys that help to stimulate his mind and off his anxiety. Puzzle balls where he has the find the treats hidden in them.
As the doctor says, unwanted behaviour should not be rewarded with attention either.
it is an untrained dog and they do not have enough common sense to get a rehabber. it is a dog and not an unhappy child
That's too much he would have to go I don't have the patience for that not after raising 4 children too
I mean that means ya don’t need a dog any dog can turn out like this it’s not not the dogs fault it’s the owner lack of exercise lack of mental stimulation lack of daily routines when you get a animal your lifestyle changes especially on breeds who needs a dog if you just going to look at it or sit around all day then get a breed that’s not as active but anyway like I said it’s the owners fault and they eventually got the help from a professional
I wonder if finding a lonely shut-in or elderly person to babysit him during the day would help? We reserve special treats to give our dog only for when we leave: bits of roasted chicken and broth frozen inside a Kong toy.
Wow
Garden answers you
Why did this couple get the dog in the first place?
This is sweet :) And sad :(
But -if I may ask- Why ask a vet for help and not a proper dogtrainer?
We had neighbors that had a dog like that and it was annoying as crap! Especially at night when you’re trying to sleep! Thankfully the dog finally stopped!!
Bruce would of had to go sorry I can't deal with that I don't care that's nerve to me so long Bruce
😥
I don't think they have a suitable yard for the dog..it's a small deck. No grass.. he doesn't want to stay outside there's nothing stimulating. He needs a friend.
she spoiled him
He's a dog! Yes a dog needs a dog they need company! And a space of their own.
An animal on its own feels BORED as well.
I wonder if a second dog would help too
Finally, an answer!
😂❤️
Still don't get, why the guy is not taking the dog running with him...
Neediest animal in the world
The only animal that completely depends on human xD quite crazy how they are so domesticated
You have posted this before....I was hoping to see an update on Bruce.
Poor dog
Valium
Tried that on our dog. Does absolutely nothing. Found out later that it's actually very dangerous for them.
Poor doggie, stars in another commercial...
?
Dude looks like Dave Portnoy lol
Interesting. That must be my boy’s brother. Same breed, gender, and problems.
