The English Cocker Spaniel.
One of the most popular dog breeds in the UK, this girl must be doing something right. As a hunter by nature she has great skills in finding, flushing and retrieving; in contrast to her American cousin she has retained more of these traits.

She’s a very happy dog with an inquisitive streak to her, she has no problem with showing you her feelings. Her sensitivity and overall loyalty means that she’s more than just a hunter, she’s a true companion too. She’s very sociable, so doesn’t like to stray very far from the security of her family.

Exercise wise, she needs a fair bit, and definitely more than the American Cocker Spaniel. A long walk on a lead every day is an absolute must, a strenuous play session in the garden is also an option, but not all the time. Take her to a safe open space for a good run and she’ll be eternally grateful, they love it.

To groom her effectively she’ll need brushing at least three times a week, these dogs have a medium length coat of silky texture and without this care it can become matted and extremely uncomfortable. Every two months or so she should be clipped and trimmed, concentrating on the head, ears feet and tail.

Interesting facts: These dogs are still extremely popular in England. In the past controversy arose when American breeders tried to steer the breed towards traits that they preferred, to the disapproval of the traditionalists in the UK. It got to a point where the English Cocker Spaniel Club disassociated itself with the American breed, and thus the two breeds were officially separated.
