In addition to this mod, you should get some flex tubing and connect it from the bottom of the airbox to the fender well. You'll have a true cold air intake for a fraction of the cost. This setup dynos the same as an expensive aftermarket setup with the benefit of having everything look stock.
you deserve a like dog, i chuckled
What part of the fender well
Wooow is that for real?
Have you done this before?
Nice vid! It would be nice if some one would make a custom top box lid to put a custom cone filter, remove the resonator and a re route kit to put the end hose in the fender....
Less mpg, higher engine temp, likely less low end torque… and yes, more noise. The purpose of the intake resonator is to control the air bouncing back when the cylinder valves close (pressure wave harmonics). The reduced intake sound is just a result of the resonator important main function that actually improves HP by ensuring continuous air flow to the engine (as opposed to the engine having to struggle to get air due to the wave harmonics going back and forth when you remove it) 😢
Too much logic and science in your response, lol. These "mods" are always stupid
👍
Is this the same when removing for a short ram intake?
This would really only be an issue under light load as the vacuum may bounce back. Anything above 2k rpm is going to suck that air through so fast it really won't matter. I would still recommend this mod, especially if you're heavy footed (which you need to be in these little 145 hp roller skates)
Almost did a resonator delete but after some research I read you’ll actually be doing a disservice to your car with this mod.
Did this on my 2nd Gen, super easy and actually made a sound difference!!
Did you have to remove the front bumper on the 2nd gen also?
Gonna have to do this! cool little mod on a cool lil car. I actually hated mine at first but after while i fell in love. The handling is awesome, 6 speed transmission, 40mpg hwy. and i have the all black leather interior with power everything, heated seats, nav, bose surround you name it. Absolutely adore my little hatchback.. I have even slept in it comfortably and i am 6 ft tall. The back folds down perfectly flat with 6.2ft of space. just an awesome little package.
Great cars for their time
This makes me want my mazda back so bad.ill get another one for sure one day

just did this on my 2004 sp2, can't hear any difference at idle or until 3k rpm, but then it's sooo much deeper. Love it, it really is a intake for free mod.
Funny, I did it to mine and it ran like absolute trash had to put it back in..
@@Unknownexplorer666 mine had insane heat soak. The intake is measured at 40°C during a 28°C day while driving 70kph. The resonator went back in and it dropped to around 30°C not a huge difference and won't cause a big difference but it just shows that Mazda engineers are smarter than us and had a very valid reason for putting it in there
Just did it on my car as a first mod n holy shit I can rlly feel the difference 08 mazda3 sedan
Nice!
REALLY LOVE MAZDA 3!!! PLEASE CONTINUE MAKING VIDEOS!! :)
I had to go down this journey of finding out what was under the air box, so it's a resonator... okay, mine was not connected but was hanging under it. I do not like the idea of having a large hole sucking in splash water underneath the engine, I live with snow so it doesn't make sense I would open up the bottom of the box for water to soak into the filter. Doesn't make much sense for me to remove it. good to know wtf it was though.
There you go, the more you know!
Just going to post an update, for 2nd gen 2.5L owners. This video doesn't apply to us, our air intake has a different set up and you may cut the side, but id probably just go with a short ram.
So we cannot do this?
Just did this mod like just now 😂😂 now for the test drive 🙃
Damn!! That resonator looks like a unborn alien 😱
😂
I removed mine and i just took the bumper off unscrewed the 3 bolts and came out easy
i have a 2008 mazda 3 neo i think it is , i blew up the motor and when i swapped it out i put a 2009 mazda 3 motor (2.0L) back in and the airbox sounds already dorphy compared to what it was
so maybe just fine a 2009 airbox , or just do this haha im certain either way this mod and my car probably sound the same.
Was only sussing this out this morning now you tube has lead me here
Or you could have just drilled a bunch of holes in the connector hose. 2015 Mazda 3 hatchback. California. Bored. Nice work :)
Perfect time. I was just thinking of this😂
Atta boi, go get that free intake 🤘
@@ColtonRichter did it earlier and and can tell a little difference and can definitely hear the woosh sound😂
really like your videos! keep it up man
and ignore haters!
Thanks for the support!
Intake on these does help the 3k range and above gives you a little more authority however you lose out on a bit of low end torque. The better mod would be the timing advanced mod for these engines. There was an older gen1 mazda 6 forum with dyno results showing 10-15hp gain just advancing the timing. For some reason Ford retards the timings a lot on these.
put me on
You cannot change the timing at ALL with that cam sensor mod. The ECU monitors the engines timing and rereads it based on the info from all the sensors. It's waste of time. The only way to really change crucial things like timing curves is with an actual ECU tune.
Just did it to my 08 Mazda 3 and she sounds just a tad different I like it, nice little free mod 😂
Ayyy!
Any idea about doing this on a 2014-2018?(gen 3)
I’ve done it on my 2017. It’s a very easy job. I cut my intake pipe around half way down so you still get a cool air feed from the scoop/intake at the top bonnet area to the now open hole at the front of the air box. Works fine, I’ve felt the air box after a drive and it’s nice and cool. It gives a nice pod filter style intake growl, without being stupidly loud. Seems to rev out nicer as well, though that could just be the nicer sound.
Will this cause any MAF sensors/engine codes to pop on? Any affect on gas? Really thinking of doing this to my 2013 mazda3. Already has muffler delete and cai.
No, the resonator won't throw any codes as it's only use is to guide in cold air from the fender
@@ColtonRichter isn't it's other purpose is to reduce air pressure waves coming out the engine and through the intake.
@@ColtonRichter if it brings in cold air why would you delete it?😂 higher air Temps are bad news bears.
If you take out the resonator is it going to make ur mpg less? Also concerned about puddles and water damage
Nothing noticeable & if you have your splash shield you should be ok!
Thanks
I hit a small street post w/ my Mazda 3 that took out my intake muffler and if I’m being honest is sounded way better after😂
😂
Is there some way to make the exhaust valve always be open?
@Colton Ritcher. I have a 2008 Mazda 3 Maxx Sport 2.0L. For those of us that are doing budget mods. Could you possibly do a tutorial on a basic muffler/resonator delete? Keep up the great work. Watching from Australia.
Just hit up a muffler shop, delete your resonator, second cat if you have one and delete your muffler box / switch to a cannon and done
@@011mpsguy I plan to get the resonator delete done hopefully in the next couple of weeks, I want to add a sports muffler and a high flow cat if I can track one down. I’m trying to do it within a budget.
Apprentice here from Nowra NSW. I recommend only removing the muffler and putting a chambered muddler or resonator instead. It remains pink slip ready. DO NOT remove any catalytic converters as it will not pass and even worse you can be fined big dollars in Australia. You can try and get lucky by having a deteriorated catalyst honeycomb. Grab something to break it up and shake it all out. No one will be able to tell unless you get your emissions tested. You'll get more popping and a much better sound.
Currently with a muffler delete, my 2.0 drones like crazy in 3k rpm going downhills. Putting a resonator or chambered muffler will stop this. Thinking of checking out my cat converter, maybe even fitting a dummy one. Will make it sound very nice.
The decibel level will not exceed the legal maximum. Just don't show off Infront of cops and you won't draw attention to yourself.
I did it on my 2008 2.0 AT, put pipe extension from the box into the front, works really nice and the sound is nice too.
But the gasoline is consuming faster than before.
Will you help me with that please?
Thanks dude
I'm writing to you from Colombia, the weather is hot all time
Not sure why, could be bringing in hotter air now with it removed and being super hot there
Colton thank you so much for your answer
I'm going to keep it like that for a few days
Today I change de Spark Plugs for a new ones
you might need to do ecu reset by unplugging the battery for awhile while you do the air box mod
Es porque aceleras mas para escucharlo 😂 ya me paso
and my 2004 mazda 3 hatch only has philips bolts to get under the fender piece and my philips head won’t fit between the bolt and the tire there’s not enough room to loosen the bumper
Glorious. Definitely something I'm going to do for the 3. 2.0L should be about the same process I'd bet,
Honestly if I were you for that build, I'd just paint those steelies silver, but I'd be hype to see the 3 go offroad. Its definitely made for that stuff, Mazda themselves used photos of a rally 3 in their brochures, so the idea always intrigued me.
This is the 2.0, it goes the same for 2004-09 etc.
This "wheel setup" is just to get my safely through the winter, when this upcoming year rolls around at the right time i'll be investing in a bigger and aggressive setup for the mud 🙂
@@ColtonRichter My mistake! definitely no 2.3 badges on that, silly of me.
Hype as hell to see. Your channel has made me appreciate the Mazda3 in a new light, I plan on tricking it out quite nicely. Your channel is great because it's basically the hub for everything BK related, and you don't neglect the 2.0, something a lot of 3 users seem to do.
Keep it up bro, I'm always watching the uploads.
Appreciate the support my guy!
I just did this to my 2015. So many "stock" warriors out there say "the car engineers designed that huge pointless resonator for a reason, removing it will destroy your engine!" lol
My Focus ran rough at 45mph when I removed the resonator. Glad I kept it.
Turn the elbow around and clamp it i did it to my 2.3l milan you can hear the intake plus no issues runs real good. But i will think about connecting a pipe to the inner fender
Resonators serve TWO purposes. One is engine sound attenuation, but more important is to absorb refraction from the air slamming against the intake valve when it comes. The resonator helps.move air into the engine faster, increasing torque and increases engine efficiency. Engineering is a real thing and those mods are generally ignorant.
I can see doing this mod/delete if you dont really care much about losing low end torque and have high mileage engine like my 03 mazda 3 GT (386K). But as a mechanical engineer from Magna I will say that dumb looking box was engineered, simulated, modeled and all the radius curved features optimally provide noise reduction to engine and push in air quicker hence small opening while fighting with the vehicular envelope spatial constraints. Swiss cheese your exhaust pop some holes there, add baffles after engine exhaust or better yet put a speaker and connect the volume to throttle body do whatever makes you happy, its not a Lamborghini. Great video if that is what you want to do, straight to the point and practical:):)
@@JohnBoulding yes
By removing the resonating air box you will loose low to mid end torque. IE drivability.
After testing, I found that it keeps the same gains in torque, while moving to an actual short ram does exactly what you say.
I did it to my Alfa Twin Spark, if anything you get more at the top of the rev range and it sounds amazing. I done a self adaptation reset on the ecu so it could learn the paramaters when the resonator is removed. Some engines are different.
Sounds great and works fine on my 2017 3.
Hey, way late to the party, but I was wondering if this would work on later gen 2015 Mazda3. I noticed the intake resonator is different and pulls from underneath the hood lid right above the radiator. I tried doing some digging but there’s not much out there for this specific mod. Was just thinking about doing it and see what happens but thought I’d get a more educated opinion before doing anything I may regret.
Yes I’ve done it on my 2017. See my reply to the same question above.
Fuuuu I'm literally in the car about to head to the muffler shop now to get my quotes done
gg
and I'm getting work done at the muffler shop today
hey i got a 2007 mazda 3 and i wanted to know if you could do a muffler and resonator delete and if its good for the car and how does it sound?
Don't delete the resonator on your exhaust, it sounds horrible. Muffler and 2nd catalytic converter will sound good 🙂
@@ColtonRichter oh cheers for that gonna get the 2nd catalytic converter done tomorrow and buy a k&n air filter and do the intake resonator delete.
Sweet!
So I did this last night to my 07 Mazda 3 hatchback and everytime I started it it would shut off instantly, any thoughts?
Did you plug in your Maf sensor or any vacuum lines
@@ColtonRichter not quite sure what all that is I’m new to it all!
@ColtonRichter Can you still do this Intake Resonator delete, While having a Short Ram Intake installed on the 2007 Mazda 3 2.0L Sedan ?
Your intake resonator doesnt attach to a cold air intake, so yes
i just did this on my accord coupe and holy shit; it's not faster but it definitely FEELS quicker. throttle response is WAYYY better, not to mention the sound and everything.
Sweet!
When you put on a Aftermarket intake, do you have to reflash the ecu? I have a gen2 mazda3 with a aftermarket that have an air to fuel ratio difference causes to run poorly.
Your MAF should correct it
@@ColtonRichter What if it doesn't? I did a ECU reset (Which was common feature), and ran somewhat okay. When you start it up (cold start) it stutters then dies. I'll have to send you a video or something to explain it.
@@cosmos2180 Could be the sensor itself. They go bad more than people realize causing numerous codes regardless of any aftermarket intake.
I'm having the same problem, any fix?@@cosmos2180
Wait so we remove it obviously, but do we put any piping or something into where you took out the resonator or?
Nope!
Hey man have you tried this with the 2nd gen?
As per comments say, it works :)
Thank you for the tutorial
Is this possible with a gen 2 mazda 3?
Yes.
Did you ever try it with you 2nd gen ?
Before doing video's on this Mazda how about taking a few minutes out of your day to clean that engine. She's dirty,..... great vid.
It's the beater, it belongs dirty!
Did you reinstall the air box after you removed the resonator?
Yes
i can’t get the first clip to the intake box out
Colton I'm confused are you supposed to have the splash guard under neath or not for this to work ????
Doesn't necessarily matter, unless you're pounding through pools of water every minute haha
@@ColtonRichter oh man I should have asked you first I just put on splash shield . Do you think this is blocking the car from getting more air 😥😥 I'm just trying to do this right. car sounds much beefier . But I want to maximize air intake k&n already ordered thanks man
The splash shield doesn't block air, there are airflow panels hidden everywhere
@@ColtonRichter ok thank you for your response
Bout to check my MP5 if it has something like this. Anyone else know?
It looks different. It has one run across over the radiator that links to the other narrow snorkel that leads to the bottom. Removing the top snorkel one gonna come off leaving a opening where it connects to the top of bottom snorkel facing up. So to remove the bottom snorkel u have to remove the airbox to get to a nut. So with those snorkels gone your mp5 just gonna have a round opening in front the box, not a opening under the box like this mazda3 have. To not suck hot air from the radiator u can fit a flexible intake to catch cold air from behind the bumper like I did for my mp5
@@hanshabell9261 thanks!! The protege unfortunately died a while ago. I did get to try the mod out for a bit and it was okay. Seems like better results on a M3
Will the check engine light come on?
No
Will this affect the car long term?
No
i’m just ab at 200k miles on my 04 is it too late to start modding ?
I wouldn't bother, that's up to you!
Wonder if I can do it on my subi lmao
Maybe something similar
This is just for sky active right?
No, sky active was only available until the next generation.
You can do this with every single year, motor size!
Perfect I got a gen 2 2.0
I’ve heard in the forums it’s not worth it and actually is a loss of power from it, is that true Colton?
I didn't experience a loss of power, only a more lively response. Having a restricted airflow to your intake creates a loss of power, aka being your intake resonator.
Colton my next mod bro thank you . First I'm going to get under car guard mine is missing . Did you see that other channel that mentions you a lot when he's showing mods for the 3 ??? What do you think about adding flexible pipe to bottom of air box and connecting to air flow in front bumper ??? Value your opinion please thanks a loyal fan bro
I'm not one to bother with a flow pipe, considering this technically removes that in a sense
@@ColtonRichter ok Colton thank you that's all I wanted to know .
👌🏽
Does this affect anyhring?
Nope!
@@ColtonRichter Alr will add it up?

It will reduce low end torque.
I just did this mod and my car stalled and won’t start back up again
Plug your maf sensor back in
What did you do after taking that huge piece out? Just put the air filter box back in the same as it was before?
Correct
Stupid now it gets hot engine air instead of fresh cold are from the front... but yeak it makes more noise.. just drill some holes than
can i do this on my 2009 mazda3 2.3L hatch?
yes, same car i have, idk if I would recommend it because it is kinda pointless
@@oscargolf8826 ok cool, thanks. do you know if is there any sound difference with the delete? cus i’m guessing the power gains aren’t even noticeable
@@mateoluque5016 maybe a little, he purposely changed the angle of which he recorded the sound in the video, probably not, it is a decent amount of work for little gain. I would recommend a resonator exhaust delete instead as a first mod

If it's a SP23 yeah, but these mods aren't power gains it's sound improvement. And if you're trying to power up the SP series dont. It's a money pit and get a MPS/MS3 the amount of money you'll spend trying to obtain the power of the turbo model, let alone surpass it. You may as well start on the it from the MS3 platform
