  • I am surfskate.
    I started surfing and skateboarding at 8 years of age in 1973 and never stopped. Surfers always said I surf like a skater. Skates always said I skate like a surfer. I just called myself surf/skate. I have always wanted to blend the two disciplines in the way I performed in both sports. I have always been an outsider because of this but still embraced it.
    My first video ever released in 1986 was entitled Surf/Skate. It was half surfing and half skateboarding.
    Now there is an actual surfskate movement! I think thats really cool but 95% of the people I see doing it online have horrible style. Surfskate for me is not about the maneuver, but about the flow and body position mixed with the carve. "Who feels it knows it."
    This is my first time riding an actual surfskate. It's the Santa Cruz X Carver Screaming Hand check cruzer with Carver c5 trucks and Santa Cruz 78a wheels. It feels amazing, although I am not used to it yet, and rode it on some very rough streets here in the Dominican Republic. Looking forward to getting into this.
    Pretty classic, the Screaming Hand logo by Jim Phillips, which has become an iconic worldwide phenomenon, was initially used for my video "Speed Freaks" for Santa Cruz Speed Wheels.
    Also did some "Steez Masters", a tribute to some of my favorite styles in surfing: Laird Hamilton, Tom Curren, Brad Gerlach, Jay Adams, Adam Replogle, Derek Ho and Mark Richards.
    Let me know in the comments if you want to see more of this!

    I got some carver cx trucks about a year ago and I absolutely love them. So fun to flow, carve and slide.

    What I love about this is people forget that skateboarding entails so much in a large portion of skating is just carving and how much fun carving can just be

    Did you film at Pizzey Park, Gold Coast, early 2000’s with a couple of Santa Cruz surfers? And Margo was there too.

      Skated Pizzey Park on many occasions in the 80's and 90's! Never with anyone from Santa Cruz though and not in the 2000s. Such a rad spot.

    Wait didn’t u say that this isn’t good for shortboard style in one of your videos?

    • @RealSkateStories
      @RealSkateStories 3 месяца назад

      Correct! In that video I said if you are a parent or a young surfer using surf skate to learn to shortboard, and your goal is getting above the lip, doing airs etc., surf skate is the worst thing you can do. The best thing you can do is learn proper ollie technique on a normal skateboard on a ramp or bowl with coping which is the opposite of surf skate technique. @@RealSkateStories so if u already know how to surf then it’s ok to surfskate?

      @@Dill_doh Absolutely!!

      Not sure why my previous reply is not visible. Weird. Yes, I did say that using surfskate to learn to shortboard and do airs is one of the worst things you can do. The best thing is to learn ollie technique on a mini ramp or bank on a normal skateboard not a surfskate or longboard. I tried to post the link to the video where I break this in this comment, it wont let me. WTF?! The video is here: ruclips.net/video/R_8xHaa-wFE/видео.html

      @@Dill_doh If you already know how to surf well, carving using core strength, hell yeah, surfskate is epic and helps your surfing!! It just creates bad habits for beginners trying to learn shortboarding.
