THANK YOU! I moved to a home with lovely red rose shrubs, but sadly, not cared for. They became leggy and hanging over onto the walkway. I’m a disabled veteran with a TBI and I learn best by being shown. You gave precise techniques and presented them in a calm and with visually clear instructions. I did my best the last pruning, but they need a deliberate shaping prune. I always dead head the blooms to help the rose bush to put energy into continued blooming and not feeding a stem with a dead bloom. I need advice on the soil in my yard, which neighbors refer to it as “Gumbo Soil.” I live in Central Alabama which has clay based soil and we have abundant rain and humidity. It’s March mud season all year around. My HOA (grrrrrr) won’t allow mulching, wants the lawns cut no more then every 10 days, we must use chemicals to kill weeds and make it look green, even when brown and dormant. I’m NOT of those practices. I mulch, free fertilizer, I encourage Dandelions to grow deep roots to break up the clay. I have a service dog and will not spray on fake green color, just to pretend the grass is not dormant. I going to try and add more organic matter and till it into the soil. I may lose some grass area, but it can be reseeded. Would spreading clover seeds, allow them to bloom and mulch them in with each cutting which I push to twice a month, or longer between cuttings? Thank you again for the great video. Content and instructions in perfect proportion.
I hope early spring (February) is when to prune roses in southern CA. They still have flowers, they flower all year actually. I will still prune them anyway. Thanks for the info.

Amending clay with rose cuttings. I bought this 30 yp rental house, and it has heavy soil and clay, front yard and back. I have some hugelkultur mounds, made from the dead trees that I had cut down. I now use rose trimmings for mini-hugelkultur mounds. Clay, when wet, is soft enough to ram rose branches into the clay in a vertical orientation. In theory, these rose branches will decay leaving nutrients in the clay, but before they rot, these vertical rose cuttings, rammed into the clay provide a highway for future roots to follow. A typical mini-huglekultur mound would be as wide as a shovel, and maybe a foot deep. I put card board, kitchen scraps, daikon radish greens, a handful of chicken manure, and top it off with about 6 inches of wet clay, and 15 to 30 vertical rose branches rammed into the clay. At first, I trimmed off the branches at ground level, but now I just leave the branches sticking out of the clay because it helps me identify that spot as mini-hugelkultur mound. This is my 1st year doing this "no till" approach, so It's experimental. The lady at the feed store didn't like this technique at all.
@mu99ins That's a good idea, and I bet you that's why the person at the store didn't like it. Do you mind if I ask you for an update?! I had never heard of hugelkultur before but I am going to look into this!! Many thanks. Ax.
@@AndreaDingbatt - Hugelkultur is logs or whatever fiber you have, covered over with earth. I've built a long one out of two trees that were in my front yard, slowly dying. I had some crazy guy cut those trees down, but I had no means of discarding them, and they were strewn over my front yard. So, I took them into the fenced side yard and made an "L" shaped Huglekulture mound, which I plant various plants, including sunflowers, veggies, and Moringa trees, the latter of which I've have little luck with. I am also growing 2 banana trees on it. With time, the dirt sinks in between the logs and that's where I throw in some more soil and plant something. Eventually, the logs will rot and become spongy, and theoretically hold water for the root systems of whatever you planted on the mounds. I'm sure that it will take a decade for the buried wood to fully decompose. The rose cuttings variation, is more of a lasagna style layering of fiber, kitchen scraps and heavy soil. I continue to think that driving vertical sticks into the ground is a good idea, except a lazy person like myself might not get around to it very often.
@@mu99ins Thank you very much for your kind reply. And the detailed information!! This is fascinating, and I am certain that it's a great way to improve the quality of any soil!! Hi Kevin, didn't know you had this handy Helper. Thank you - We have a splendid rose bush - very vigorous - and terribly thorny, probably 15-years old and looking at what you do to yours I can see I've been way too timid and reticent only clipping to shape - course the blackbirds usually have a nest in it so I've tended not to want to disturb it, but this year (Aug 2020) equivalent to Feb in the North and sure enough lots of new growth I've decided to have a Go at it! About a half of it was dead, so in desperate need of attention... Watching you vid I can now return with more confidence & shall endeavour to prune it back a couple more times should this clipping not kill it! Cheers to you & Dearly 👍🦘🐾🌹🍀

Cut above the outward facing node to shape. You can use wood glue on the newly cut canes to prevent woodborers attacking the shrub. Thorns may carry a bacteria that can cause a nasty fungle infection, so be careful of those thorns.

Forgot to say, great video. Good to do one on pruning young fruit trees like Blackcurrant. The only way we can reasonably get Blackcurrants in the UK, at least recently, is to grow them. Most Blackcurrants are bought up to make Ribena, which although a great drink is pretty much of a pain if like me you love eating 'em! 🙂

Cheers to you & Dearly 👍🦘🐾🌹🍀
great advice, i have 20 or more roses and i love taking care of them. dan72
It looks like the nasty comment was deleted. Don't let the trolls get to you. You have a beautiful family and life. Take care.
Amen to That!!
Looks like someone faster than me, that wouldn't take much, Lol!
Has reported the nasty little basement rat and the stupid, revolting comment has been removed, I wish there was a way for personal accountability could be enforced, that'd stop the vast majority of the BS these edjits would type out and send!!
I hope you are well, and have a blessed week ahead of you.
Andrea, Jasper and George the Pigeon. XxX.
Wow! So informative, thank you
Love this video. You were super detailed with why and how and I love your comment about your wife.
Thanks for the info. We just moved into a rental with a yard and whoever was here before did not take care of the garden. I discovered two rose bushes that desperately need some help.
Hi Kevin and Family, we were also going to report the D-Bag but he's gone and good riddance. Keep up the great videos and positivity, we love all the content and you make us laugh and cheer us all up with your amazing stories. Sending you all good vibes BRA from Essex in the UK. Respect to you and love to your family from ours love Shaz and Steve Green xxx
Great life advice.. “there’s more than one way to prune a rose bush” ☝️ 🧐
Looked for the Dbag racist but I guess they removed the post to remain hidden. I wish the world was a bit more evolved but apparently we have lots more work to do. Thank you for the positivity and humor you put out into the world.
Very informative. Thank you
Like Poison said: "Every Rose Has a Thorn" Cool!
Cut above the outward facing node to shape. You can use wood glue on the newly cut canes to prevent woodborers attacking the shrub. Thorns may carry a bacteria that can cause a nasty fungle infection, so be careful of those thorns.
Thank you! Using this to prune our 2-year-old rose bushes here in East Tennessee today.
I’m in East TN and pruning tomorrow!
@@R6WillyJ I should have double checked the weather -- hope that freeze last night didnt hurt them too much... But you should be good to go now -- spring has arrived.
Love your spirit. Can't find the comment. Please let us know if these dark unacceptable comments appear again.
Thanks for a great informative video, I was worried about my rose bush blooming in October. Thanks for the information that it’s common for blooming in October.🙏👍
Just checked too, 14 ran out of REASONS....
😁👍.
Namaste 🙏 XxX.
Beautiful yard!
Great video!
Lol the Poison reference… 🤣👍🏻
Great and informative video. Wahoowa!
Very comprehensive and very clear. Thank you so much!
Very good video, simple instructions ⚘
Forgot to say, great video. Good to do one on pruning young fruit trees like Blackcurrant. The only way we can reasonably get Blackcurrants in the UK, at least recently, is to grow them. Most Blackcurrants are bought up to make Ribena, which although a great drink is pretty much of a pain if like me you love eating 'em! 🙂
Didn't see the disgusting comment. Liked your video. Your tools are just like mine! LOL
Loved the video, thanks for explaining, also loved the cardinals background
Great video. All pertinent information. Thanks!
Thank you for great video
