Kind of like shinsou from my hero academia. He has the ability to control other people after they respond to a question. He has a character arc about trying to prove he can use his power for good.
Everyone’s mentioning BNHA but I’ve got to suggest dsmp superhero fan fictions because it’s somehow universally agreed that one of the charachters has mind control powers and is called ‘Siren’ now whether they’re a hero or not depends on the story you’re reading but I am here to heavily recommend those pieces of writing if anyone is curious enough to look them up. Something that weirded me out was the random use of Spanish words, it literally added nothing. Also, your entire series is about mythical creatures, but not a single one is inspired from any Hispanic culture, but you still try to hammer in the fact that the main girl is Hispanic? What?
Is Spanish only supposed to be used to add something? I think your second criticism is completely valid, but I don’t think characters being bilingual needs to add something.
@@SunBeeSmoked I'm just saying that the way they're trying to be "inclusive" is a bit wonky. It's sort of like "Hey look she speaks Spanish! Do we get our browny points now?". Language and the way it's used can tell you a lot about a character, their way of thinking, and personality. My point is that you could take out the Spanish, replace it with any other language, and it would be the exact same thing. It literally adds nothing to the character. So why have it in the first place?

Being bilingual in real life doesn’t add to someone’s character and bilingual people often replace words in their other languages even by accident. People in real life don’t get brownie points for being bilingual, a show doesn’t either. Bilingual people just exist. I could replace parts of my conversations with different languages and still be saying the same thing because that’s my intention. You aren’t bilingual to change the meaning of anything.

Example 1: Disney created a very time-sensitive cartoon where Donald Duck dreamed he was a Nazi, performed ludicrous tasks, and when he wakes up he salutes to the American flag. That cartoon was published during World War 2 and the government asked Disney to make it.
Example 2: Captain America and Superman were made to sell War Bonds. About 20 years before the first Avengers comics started being published, Captain America was created to sell war bonds as a patriotic insult to the German concept of the Uberminch, or "Super Man" when translated. By German description, Steve Rogers after undergoing the Super Soldier Serum was considered to be the perfect man. However since Steve was a resident of Brooklyn, he became Captain America.
Similar story happened with Superman: Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were both children of Jewish Immigrants. When they met and became friends in high school, they started writing comics together and when they were given the chance, they created Superman as an insult to the Nazi party. Instead of a perfect man to rule the world, Clark was a space immigrant who was a mild mannered reporter who only sought out truth and justice. He had black hair and worked on a farm, and chose to help people with his abilities.

As someone who has read the books and even listened to the audiobooks, it is not the best source material for a kids show. It is very much adult smut. The worldbuilding of the series is fun and all, but if the people who made the show tried to base it on the characters themselves, they took a seriously wrong turn. I’m just having a hard time with just the intro of the first episode because….it just seems so wrong to me.
But then again, I didn’t read the Dragon Marked series WHICH IS WHAT THIS IS BASED OFF, NOT SUPERNATURAL ACADEMY, so take my words as just a guidance or reference. I emphasize this because both series deal with different stuff. Dragon Marked deals with the dragon king. Supernatural Academy deals with Atlantis. Because they are in the same world, characters might cross over to the other books like Louis does, but other than that, different plots.

Actually it sucked for Leah specifically. Her boyfriend imprinted on another girl and she had to deal with that, and Werewolves are telepathic and she had to listen to his thoughts about it constantly. And female Twilight werewolves don't get periods any more which she hated.
If you remove Leah specific drama and you don't actually want kids Werewolves are pretty cool.

Man, this seems disappointing. The art and animation are good, the character designs are good, the initial setup is good, but from what I can tell, it just kinda...fell apart? Like the writers wrote the first part of the story then ran out of ideas and just kinda improvised until they got to the end of the season. Such a shame. It seemed really promising at first. Also, the "you can't just change someone's skin color" bit was just...weird. C'mon. They're literally a purple fantasy creature.

I know right. 100% on all counts. Making an animated adaptation, feels like it was a good idea and definitely like the art and animation, but it also feels like a big part of this and a lot of the dialogue and interactions are very big missed opportunity.
I also quite like the character designs, which kind of honestly remind me of Apple avatar options which is interesting. However, the environments I feel could definitely be better. It reminds me a lot of SimCity but not as diverse and you can really see how more flat and simple the campus is by comparison to probably what is described in the novels. Even when it comes to the human world, it feels like a huge amount of locations are just skipped, in order to get everything in one episode that really should be shown. Basically it feels like they just keep recycling, the same locations again and again. My best bet is that they either didn’t want to bother, or they simply sadly didn’t have enough time and money to make all of the extra environments and interiors to give more exploration of the world its setting.
OK parts of this show are good but most of it is bad from the start, especially the animation (impact frames bad, stilted movements, etc). Everything about this show is so g o o f y. That's kinda why I like it tho

It honestly sounds like they're trying to get the more interesting parts of the book out and not bother to actually explain things. I haven't read the book yet but I'm willing to bet all of these events in the show make 100% more sense in the book
They didn't follow the books at all. I never read the books but I heard they are for adults and the characters don't even have the same names.
I suggest not reading the books unless you're over 18 years old. Because in the books there's a lot of smut, and sexual undertones.
So, I looked up the book series. This show sounds more like the "Supernatural Prison" trilogy though only Jessa is mentioned in the synopsis and she's twenty-two and already knows she is dragon marked. "Supernatural Academy" is about a girl named Maddison James. Suffice to say, I'm confused where this story is going and coming from

Supernatural prison came out first then supernatural academy is like a spin off. In the book they live in supernatural prison communities to help keep them safe & hidden. I don’t quite get why they changed it to the school other than they may end up making this in time before Madison James starts school just to make the tv series last longer… why they take ideas from books and change everything to begin with idk. The books are amazing much better but I enjoyed the show.

My best friend and I were thinking the same thing about Jay! We are always against any racial discrimination, but Jay is literally purple. It doesn't work for them to roam around purple with no upcoming parade and makes them an easier target. It is genuinely a survival thing from here. I love Jay. Jay is my favorite character, but they're from another world where skin color was never the main concern.
I don't know, I felt so off about this tbh. I liked everything else, but it felt like they tried too hard to be more updated and inclusive without making it flow naturally. I really liked the best example that I always think of is Owl House. That is like, my top tier representation right there. They show cased everything without feeling like you have to display anything because all we want to be treated like is a normal person by the end of the day.
I totally agree with you. Also yeah Jay might be my favourite character as well. Although it’s hard to tell whether that might be because of the personality or just because they look really cool and what their abilities are. lol I do love a Wolf ugh soooo.
Although I really didn’t like the way, they introduced Jay with the forced they and them thing that felt so totally conversationally unnatural.
Also, on top of The Owl House, after seeing it with my old uni housemate, my other favourite representation in western animation for LGBTQ, or simply a really surprising, but wonderful relationship coupling might be She-ra princess of power. I was just so surprised, but also applauding with joy for the end of that story. I’m straight and even I absolutely loved it. In the end, its story totally made sense and I feel like an idiot for not realising the developments that happens throughout. The Legend of Korra also does this, to extent anyway, and I think it’s really underappreciated because it came out relatively so early before all of the other representation in animation really started to kick off and when it was not as mainstream.
That first episode fey realm thing seemed like a "So... the dragon king was not a tyrant, the magical world feeds on it's citizens, so the dragon had to destroy it to save everyones lives, but for one reason or another, people lied about what happened"

I can not tell you how many reverse harem supernatural academy books there are. For a second there I almost believed they made a show based on one of those books!
"You can't change someone skin color" X-Men evolution did so nightcrawler doesn't look like a walking demon and Jay can use glamor to not look purple it, I see what they were doing but it looked forced.

i like the animation and the pro-queer content it puts in here and there, but it definitely goes a bit off the rails. still, if positioned properly, this feels like a good show for tweens, it’s mature enough to not make them feel talked down to, but not so mature that it’s going to bring them down.

I personally liked the show, still wish season 2 would come out. The only I didn't like was the "you can't just change someone's skin color" I was immediately like "girl relax" because she's literally purple.

Looks ok. Thought most of the female characters look like clones with diffrent hair. They have similar face shapes and features. The boys look alot diffrent from each other at least.

I’m guessing the rest of the dragon marked shifters can’t transform into dragons too because they’re not part of the prophecy like Mischa & Jessa are but if that’s the case, then Mischa should be able to become a dragon shifter too. It just makes Jessa look weirdly overpowered if she’s the only one of the 2 able to become a dual shifter (plus it also took away from Brax being the only dragon shifter)
At the beginning Jessa said that power is the equivalent to money and her dad is the head of the council so that could be why she doesn't have much emotional knowledge

Close them in like, 20-30 mins into it, cause I get bored. See, I never liked the idea of some things getting labeled as "for kids only", this stereotype kinda broke with MLP series, but at the same time, it was just around one particular show. But some things are just... Not for people who already got the thought procces of a movie/series critique, if you watch reviews a lot, watching something like this will be... Too confusing. It will be boring no matter what, cause everything that happens will be predictable and kind of... Not intense enough for ur age.

The thing that’s really pissing me off about this show was the missed treatment of Terra. It’s giving Bonnie Bennett in the vampire diaries. Help your friends only for them to not care about what that help has done to her. Jessa is really selfish. She doesn’t care about anybody except herself and maybe her sister and the blonde guy. Jae got hurt. She didnt even check on Jae. And we were still supposed to route for Jessa and Misha.

They actually based the show on supernatural prison, a different set of books by the same author. Supernatural Academy trilogy is much more adult (and according to the Amazon description so is Supernatural Prison book series) The main protagonists are 21/22, (not 16/17 as in the show) and use adult language, swearing etc, and includes a "sex scene". So anyone who wants to get the books for younger kids/fans, read one yourself first! (If you have Kindle Unlimited it won't cost you a penny)

When I watched it I almost gave up on it after 2 episodes, but I wanted to give it a chance so I watched it all. The idea was nice, but yeah, the execution wasn't great. The main characters just rush without thinking just to make the story more interesting, but it just felt like they weren't smart enough to handle the situation. Plus, they were very out in the open when they try to be secretive about things. The way they reveal the villain's motivation wasn't very mysterious as it kinda should to keep the viewers guessing I suppose and it was kinda everywhere. I mean, it looked too obvious and their reasons why they're doing evil things wasn't really grasping my attention. But the teacher who I thought was kind and turns out to be evil was actually a surprise for me. Elda has a better potential in being the villain, but how she started gaining more power out of no where when she entered the office confused me. In terms of design and animation, I think it's good. I think if they ever plan on doing a season 2, the animation might improve. The story and characters need a lot of polishing, but I did like it, I just wish it was more exciting.
Now I see where the DnD comparison comes from. The BIG BAD GUY is presented to the party. It is sure to be the final showdown. The party whispers to each other and come up with the DUMBEST plan that beats this BBG. They get all the lucky rolls and whalla! Bad guy is down in a humiliating and easy fashion.
there are so many instances where the scene needs a pause or stronger emotion in the voice acting, for instance, the early reveal but not showcase of the dragon mark, that scene has Jessa move to the couch out of shock while Misha is still at the door, a simple pause between the dramatic reveal and the continuation of the exposition would have made the scene fit better for its purposes, also it feels like 90% of the dialogue is said with the barebones emotion and no direction, like the VA's we're told the lines and the emotion, but weren't given the necessary context for their lines to truly vocalize them, but that may have just been me

Never heard of this show or the books until this vid, I thought NL had uncovered another obscure, dead franchise I didn’t know about. Also, this show sounds like Monster High meets Winx Club, with a dash of Buffy.
9:50 I always say this, and I will stick by it for many years to come. Nothing brings people together more than hate. Like if you look at the top comments on some webtoons you will always see people hating in the antagonist and giving nicknames such as: ASSpollo, SovieSHIT, and TRASHTA which to be honest is completely fair. Or people will be arguing which BTS song is the best but pretty much everyone agrees ON ft. Sia is the worst. I think it's just easier to find flaws in things than to find something that is flawless or overall well liked by just about everyone, but we can all agree on bad thing is indeed bad.
To be honest, I feel sorry for this show. It feels like the first episodes were done by one team and the second episode about the dances and up to the final were made by different team. I really like the first episodes. They are strongly clichéd in places, but at least there wasn't anything too cringe. There was again the "if people don't accept you, that's their problem"-moral, which is often covered in the children's and teen media these days. And I liked how they mentioned the fact that sometimes friends can stop feel comfortable with each other, and that's better to stay buddies and make new friends (It's a pity that it didn't work out in the end.). I even wondered how the story would go and how it would all end. But then I sat in shock every episode, repeating in my head "what? What's going on? Slow down!". I'll never understand why they made Kristoff a super-villain, it looked strange and out of place (I don’t know if it was from the book series, I haven’t read it yet). Damn, he could just be a conservative antagonist, who would eventually rethink his behavior in/before final. In the first few episodes, he behaved like "an annoying adult character fixated on the rules". And in the dancing scenes, I expected him to capture the twins and seal them in crystals because he thinks they're dangerous. But when he started his "great villainous speech", I was just washed over by a wave of awkwardness.

This series gives me strong Twilight vibes even though I've never read the books or watched the movies. 😜 The character design for Jessa reminds me of Elisa from Gargoyles.

I just finished the show in I didn't hate it I actually really liked it I give it a good 7/10 the writing could be better but the characters are likeable and the animation is decent
The last note for the writers of the story is just nice, how you aware that they're human and can get hurt by words. Now that i actually say it it's actually sound a bit...meh but that's just how i feel.

Ive only just discovered today that Supernatural Academy is a thing and after hearing your honest opinions on it I can only say...I'm a bit disappointed. I'm not saying I hate it...I mean; The animation is good, the idea was interesting, there was some great moments and character development, and I love the character designs, plus I'm a sucker for anything that involves both wolves (weather they are werewolves or dire wolves) and dragons in a fantasy story...it just failed at everything else. I honestly felt that they had potential since i also believe they had an ok start in the beginning. I just wished they kept that same good star throughout the rest of the season. Having said that, I'm probably going to still watch it since this is one of the shows that i put in my list of "Shows that weren't exactly good...but ill still watch them when I'm bored, have a creative block when I do my art and/or when I just need something to listen in the background while I do my art". Yep...I don't really hate it, but I also don't really like it so its a decent Ok. I also just found out that Jay is Canadian (like myself) and they are now one of my favourite characters alongside Mischa and Jessa. Great job and I cant wait to see what you review next.
The series looks interesting and the animation and idea is excellent, plus excellent character design, the story however and everything else failed. But I'm writing an original series similar to this so this can be a good reference as well as other shows with a similar concept etc. I may read the books because they look awesome as well as good source material.

Long paragraph, I know, I'm sorry. Despite the differing opinions that I'm about to express, I still enjoyed the video, it brought some perspectives I haven't considered when I watched the show. And the edits were amazing.
While I agree with some of the points that were brought up, I actually liked the show and I don't think it's garbage. It is cheesy, yes, but I don't mind, and maybe I'm just a simple individual who overinvests in characters and maybe that's why I don't see plot holes or narrative/pacing issues. One huge thing that I was absolutely delighted with was that it didn't have a lot of relationship drama and also had some pretty decent communication between the couples & friends, unlike a lot of YA media.
Also, the twins snap decisions made sense because they're teens in somewhat high stress situations, where someone usually can't always think things through, especially when the imminent danger can happen at any moment. And although power hunger as an evil motivation is pretty cartoony, I say it is still a pretty valid motivation (and come on, we know that this motivation exists irl too, look at world leaders and other people in power throughout history). But it also seemed like Kristoff wanted major power because, from what I can guess, it seems like his wife is dead and he probably wishes power so he can revive her, where better to get such strong magic that can revive the dead than from the most powerful being that ever existed in their history: the Dragon King. Still foolish to think that the Dragon King would've actually granted that wish, but hey, Kristoff was probably extremely desperate and thought if he could get in the good graces of the King, he would've been handsomely rewarded.
Netflix has a bad habit of mixing books together and hoping no one notices, when I finished watching the series I found that out and suddenly the pacing problem made much more sense
I liked the show, for the most part.
Misha and Jessa, two sisters, falling for each of the brothers was weird, though I guess the ending alleviates that a little, knowing that he’ll probably be a villain in season 2.

I watched a few episodes of the show although I haven't read the books. It was good but at the same time lacking. I could see the idea they were going for but the execution of it wasn't fully planned out and missing a few elements.
Not gonna lie after watching a few episodes I just ended up skipping to the finale hoping it would make more sense to me and then convince me to watch the whole series this time, and it partly did.
Personally I feel like they rushed the whole thing in just the few episodes I saw. They mostly displayed the scenes that where the high and low suspenseful aspects but in the processes they ignored the build up to those moments which would have added more flare and drama.
The show immediately identified the protagonists and antagonists, back stories, schemes, plot twists and hidden motives without the air of mystery to it to let the audience have their own sessions with theories of whodunnit, which took the fun put cause in a way they can already tell how it'll probably play out open and shut.
All in all the show has potential but just needs a few tweaks here and there.
Series is more "adapted", and i use the word "adapted" loosely, from the Supernatural Prison series and NOT Supernatural Academy. The prison series is about a dragon king, and the Academy series is about Atlantis and gods. The series seems to be inspired by the books, as they're set in the same world and does have some character crossovers in the Academy books. HOWEVER they're smut/spicy books, which means there's sex in them. They're not harem books. But the sex is descriptive. 🤷🏻♀️

Peacock took an adult oriented novel with relatively heavy themes, and tried to make a show for... kids it seems.
That is why they de-aged everyone. Jessa was 22 in the "Supernatural Prison" book series.
Which creates that strange mish-mash of genres.
And I think the team was either struggleing with the animation and later story, which was probably due to some pandemic related shenanigans happening.
I mean, it was released in early 2022, so that means they worked hard on it in 2020 and 2021.
You summarized it pretty well. I like the characters, the story and the mystery, but it is missing that special something to make it really stand out.

Having ideas that exist in other stories is not the same as stealing. These are incredibly common fantasy tropes. The show isn't good but it didn't "steal" these ideas.

I've watched the full series on RUclips (on the YT channel called Amazin' Adventures) and by re-watching again your review I'm realizing that I've watched a censored version of the show.
Just with the first episode, I didn't have the scene with the jerk human or when Misha's mom eliminate the spy. In general, all the fight scenes with violence, when someone looks hurted, or when a gun is shown on screen was cut. That's explain why I had the feeling that I missed some scenes in the last couple of episodes because the scenes followed each other with no sense.
Even the mention of the pride community was cut thought they kept the commentary about paint on purple skin.
I agree with previous comments some good ones to review next would be the show mysticons, Cleopatra in space or maybe the MyScene barbie line if possible. Just suggestions though.

I watched the show when I saw negative was going to review it. The art looked interesting and I thought it would give me more insight into what was going to be talked about.
I agree the show went off the rails towards the end, but I thought it did pretty good. Most likely I read different things from the same events, but I was seeing things like teens in stressful situations making bad decisions, people dealing with the same event in a different way (ie, losing magic multiple times and the first time being so upset they betrayed their friends), how they dealt with what was directly in front of them instead of seeing the forest for the trees (ie catching christoph and thinking that would make things better, or ignoring jae when they're suffering from trauma and in essence a form of addiction)...
My headcannons for the show are probably better than it actually was, and I don't regret that
