I worked on Musicology as an Engineer in Los Angeles at Pacifique. The Marrying Kind, If Eye was the Man in Your Life, and On The Couch were all recorded as 1 song on the same tape. They were only split up with song ID's for the CD. We did receive 2" Master tapes flown in from Minneapolis and one of those was from the late 90's (97 or 98) so it probably was A Million Days. It was a really amazing time, I worked on that a few months and have so many memories and stories. United States of Division was great, he spent a lot of time on that. I saw the tour and a lot of great intimate shows during that time
The last time I saw Prince live was during the Musicology Tour. He and the NPG tore the roof off of the Toyota Center! And, yes…I was still a member of the NPGMC, so I had a REALLY good seat close to the stage.
I saw the Reno warmup show of this tour and didn’t know where my seats were until I picked them up at will call. It was my first time getting front row tickets! My seats were right next to John Blackwell’s setup. The tickets bus NPGMC were only $77 each. It’s an incredible memory.
In the early 2000's I was slaving away at a Cafe I helped create but my boss was taking advantage of me at. His brother came in from Michigan to work there too and his brother was a big Prince fan. He had told me all about the Musicology album and he played it for me. So on those nights I was left slaving alone I used to kill that album playing it over and over as well as The Exodus.
The first Prince album I listened to. I was 7 years old, I heard “Call My Name” on the radio. I asked my pops who was that person with the high voice, and he told me about Prince. From that moment I’ve been hooked. Everything from my style and the music I listen to, has been inspired by Prince in someway. Hell, I even play guitar, drums and piano because of him. This video was great! Peace and be wild💜
Took my 3 year old daughter to the Shreveport/Bossier City Louisiana concert. I was a npgmc member and got great seats … John Blackwell gave my daughter a drumstick and Ann got the Jehovah witness magazine from Prince after the concert as he pass them out
Yes, attended the tour June 25 Rosemont Horizon, amazing energy, I love that the excitment & promo around this record felt similiar to the kind of excitement for P in the mid 80s.. that's how it felt to me, P reminding the world of what all of us already knew, he was the greatest.
While RAVE UN2 THE JOY FANTASTIC will always have a special place in my heart, as it came out when I met my wife, I love MUSICOLOGY. A MILLION DAYS helped me a lot when I was in the hospital in 2014 because I could only see Laura (my wife) A couple of hours a day in that period. CINNAMON GIRL is another of my all-time favorite tracks on the album. It calms our cat Jadis when she's nervous. "Musicology" is special to me because it was the one and only time I saw Prince live on tour. I got the album (cd) free with the ticket. My favorite track is the title track but I also like "Illusion, Coma, Pimp And Circumstance," "Call My Name" and "On The Couch."💜
Blessed to go to a few shows and sound checks 🥰 another cool thing he did was stream the LA show and we watched it at a movie theater with the purple fam 🍿
I was there at the concert at the Palace at Auburn Hills (miss that place). And still have my promo copy I got at the door with my tickets. Love this album! Return to form. Couldn't get enough of it.
I met him here in San Diego after the concert. Hung out with Prince , Larry and their wives as we watched the show he just did on the tv! He was super cool and I shook his hand
One of the best times to have ever been a Prince fan. From Grammy’s 2004 to Grammy’s 2005, Prince was all over the place and I missed that so much. Musicology the album was so dope! I played it on a regular basis, even when I was in the military in Iraq. Seeing Prince on the cover of Entertainment Weekly & Rolling Stone was incredible & rewarding but the tour, maaaaaannnnnn that tour was something special to behold. I saw him do 2 shows in L.A., a show in NYC & an after show at the House of Blues in L.A. The only thing that I wish happened was Prince having a song all over the radio here in the states. We were cheated out of that but it didn’t take away from how incredible 2004 was. We as Prince fans were fed GOOD that year and it’s a year I’ll never forget!
Great album!! I have this album on CD and vinyl!! There will never be another PRINCE. GREAT MUSIC. THANK YOU FOR POSTING TGESE SEGMENTS OF PRINCES MUSIC
Great video as always. I remember seeing the “Musicology” music video for the first time when I was a kid and thinking Prince was so cool. Planting the seed for my future fandom :)
I had kind of stopped paying close attention after in my opinion the sub-par Emancipation and Jam Of The Year Tour but came back onboard for this album and tour. I saw him at the Club Black aftershow in NYC the night he got inducted into the RRHOF and then saw 3 Musicology shows which were all amazing, especially the solo acoustic section in the middle of each show. I was lucky enough to see him 5 more times before he passed, all bangers.
I thought that Musicology was okay but I don't listen to it much. It veers towards the mainstream without the inventiveness of his hit making past. I recall critics proclaiming it to be his best work since who knows when. Personally, I was more interested in The Rainbow Children and N.E.W.S. and felt that he'd been doing great work all along. The masses just weren't paying attention. I think that this album's warmer reception had everything to do with the timing. He had just been inducted into the RRHOF and had also made a high profile appearance at the Grammys. It reminded some of the more casual listeners that Prince was still a viable entity. The most memorable moment for me was Illusion, Coma, Pimp and Circumstance.
I totally agree! I think Musicology is strong but I think The Rainbow Children is his last, great concept album. I would have loved to have caught that tour but he didn't make it 'round my parts.
Yes I saw Musicology Tour in Tampa . Me and my brother use to Live there. And yes we were a NPG members. Got the tickets in 4’th row , but in the middle of the show I came clocer so have seen Prince from 2 meters. It was a great show , sound was fantastic , and very laud. At the and he finished with Purple Rusin on Habibi . Love the whole album And yes in that period He was everywere. NPGMC great concep Thank’s TVR for such a great work guys:)
It was there 4th time I'd seen Prince. I saw this concert in Columbia SC. We had nose bleed seats but with the big video board it was like watching tv. The acapella set he did with the acoustic guitar was so crisp and clean it was like he was in your living room singing to you.
Musicology 2004ever! I remember dancing on the floor of Madison Square Garden in New York City soaking up all of His Royal Badness’ Purple Majesty. After everything that Prince had gone through it was a triumphant return to arenas that turned out to be Prince’s 2nd biggest tour in the US after Purple Rain. The NPGMUSIC CLUB presale setup for tickets was fantastic and incredibly convenient for fans. Get a copy of the album with your ticket? Genius! Such a magnificent time. P.S. Silver Tongue is a fantastic virtual B-side. One of my favorites. A personal classic. I absolutely love both Prince’s version and Nikki Costa’s. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
I had a similar experience to your Metal Works sessions. In 98 my friend asked me to go with him to Paris to help him co produce and mix an album for French Hip Hop group KDD. The studio we went to was Studio Davout. So after we finish and come back to NYC, I pick up Crystal Ball. Low and behold besides Paisley Park, Studio Davout is listed as where some of the stuff was recorded
Great series! Please continue them! Unfortunately for me this was just another album he released after 2000 that didn't hold my attention... I was a huge fan and collector for al long time until the release of Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic, that was the moment for me when he started to release music that was not exicting enough for me anymore. Maybe by that time my music taste started to differ, I don't know. Anyone else recognizes this?
I feel exactly the same way. Prince always had an edge. And he lost it when all of his music became G-rated. It's difficult to remain so sexually charged when someone reaches middle age, but there are other ways to be edgy. I think he kept an edge with The Rainbow Children, just by being controversial and keeping things heavy. But that was the last album for me.
I'm happy it was a commercial hit for Prince even if I thought it was "just okay", by my high standards for a Prince album! Until I hear HIT AND RUN volumes 1 and 2, my favorite "Millenial Prince" albums remain 3121 and INDIGO NIGHTS!
One interesting Reno item from the tour. Prince opened it here and rehearsed in the arena on the UNR campus (where it took place) for a week. One night after rehearsals, he went back to his hotel (the Grand Sierra Resort) and had a late-night jam on soul and rock songs with the band that played the late shift there. Pretty wild!
I love this album but at the time of release I was honestly more excited that it really brought Prince back to the main stream. I sww him twice on that tour, once at Joe Louis Arena then the next night at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Both shows were absolutely on fire.
'Why must I say "God Bless America"? And not the rest of the world Oh SAY can you SEE? I love my country but I love God more Every man, women, boy and girl Oooh, can you say it with me? . . . Everybody stop fighting! . . . Everybody make Love! 💜
Salute to @the violet reality. I really enjoyed the Musicology album. Musicology, Call My Name, A Million Days, and What Do U Want Me 2 Do is some of my favorites off the album. It's definitely one of my favorite post Warner era released albums. I did attend the Musicology Tour in 2004 also. It's my one and only time that I got to see Prince live and it was worth it. I love it. I like this era because although 2004 meant so much to us as fan with it being the 20th anniversary of Purple Rain and Prince getting honored into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. This still was about Musicology, school's in. He was definitely one of my highlights in 2004. He made a strong statement thru out the year, which was simple: I'm still that dude.😎Musicology4Ever💜
That Musicology band was by far the best funk band!!! Around 05 is when I became a crazy Prince fan....and I blamed my dad for only playing Michale Jackson lol.....Prince is better PERIOD!!!!
Thank you for keeping this series going. From here on out though, everything he did was way too G-rated and kid-friendly for me. He officially lost his edge with Musicology.
What's your favourite memory of the Musicology era and your favorite song from the album? We would love to know! 💜
I worked on Musicology as an Engineer in Los Angeles at Pacifique. The Marrying Kind, If Eye was the Man in Your Life, and On The Couch were all recorded as 1 song on the same tape. Great to hear these stories John! Thanks so much for sharing 💜
I LOVE Musicology! That whole trilogy of Musicology, 3121 and Planet Earth is so damn good and under appreciated in my opinion!
Miss the NPG MUSIC CLUB

I dig Musicology. I took my moms to the show. It was the last time I saw him in concert and he did not disappoint.
An amazing Era. "Dear Mr. Man" 4 the Win. ☸🕊💜
Took my 3 year old daughter to the Shreveport/Bossier City Louisiana concert. I was a npgmc member and got great seats … John Blackwell gave my daughter a drumstick and Ann got the Jehovah witness magazine from Prince after the concert as he pass them out

Musicology was the second and final time that I saw Prince live. It was thunderous, rapturous, and just plain old lit.
I caught the Musicology tour in D.C. It was a great show, and Prince actually greeted attendees after the show.
While RAVE UN2 THE JOY FANTASTIC will always have a special place in my heart, as it came out when I met my wife, I love MUSICOLOGY. I attended the tour in Sunrise, FL !!! I sat (and stood, and danced) up front in the NPG Music Club section! Unbelievable night!!!
I met him here in San Diego after the concert. Hung out with Prince , Larry and their wives as we watched the show he just did on the tv!
He was super cool and I shook his hand

What a great comeback album. R.I.P PRINCE THE GREATEST TO EVER DO IT! 1love
Thanks for another great, lesser-known facts video!
YEEEESSS musicology one of my favorites albums
Great album and tour! I went to 6 shows and had the time of my life as with most Prince tours. This version of the NPG is 1 of my favorites 🤘🏾
So solid! Thanks for the research and info🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Did attend musicology with a friend, my son, and prince put us next to the sound board. The best seat in house!
I thought that Musicology was okay but I don't listen to it much. It veers towards the mainstream without the inventiveness of his hit making past.

I only got to see prince twice--Musicology tour in Philly & his last ever concert, Piano & A Microphone, in Atlanta
It was there 4th time I'd seen Prince. I saw this concert in Columbia SC. We had nose bleed seats but with the big video board it was like watching tv. The acapella set he did with the acoustic guitar was so crisp and clean it was like he was in your living room singing to you.
LOVE YOUR WORK CASEY! This is one of my fave 21st century Prince records.
No video for N.E.W.S.? It was a physical release and everything! Oh well... ;D
Happy that Musicology was the beginning of an era that showed the general public how great he was. Superbowl, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, etc
Musicology 2004ever! I remember dancing on the floor of Madison Square Garden in New York City soaking up all of His Royal Badness’ Purple Majesty. Saw him twice in Dallas on this tour !
Saw the show in Nashville in Imax. It was a simulcast of the Staples Center show. DOPE

You are on!! Stokely is a beast!!! Mint Condition IMO is up there with Cameo, GAP Band.
I love this album but at the time of release I was honestly more excited that it really brought Prince back to the main stream.

Yes saw this tour in Aug 2004 philadelphia..they gave copy of the album afterwards
He came to Metro Detroit on Father’s Day during the Musicology tour. I took my Pops to see him and we had the time of our lives🙌🏾
Musicology Philly where Patti Labelle got on stage was my first concert ever and only prince show I attended ☔️🕊
'Why must I say "God Bless America"?

That was dope. My parents got to see the OKC show.

I also went to Dallas and Houston show and got tickets off the npgmc … after the Dallas show, we went to erykah badu club where he showed up
That's like a forgotten album to me that I don't listen to often.
That Musicology band was by far the best funk band!!! Around 05 is when I became a crazy Prince fan....and I blamed my dad for only playing Michale Jackson lol.....Prince is better PERIOD!!!!
I was so frustrated at the time because he didn’t tour Europe.
It’s great to hear that you love this album so much Casey. For me, it never connected. I hardly listen to this album, but I will give it another try.
Thank you for keeping this series going. From here on out though, everything he did was way too G-rated and kid-friendly for me. He officially lost his edge with Musicology.
