  • Well what a year it has been. With an unusual amount of free time on my hands I was able to complete a lot of sewing projects this year. So grab a cuppa and come with me as I reflect on everything I have sewn this year in my #CostubeYearInReview
I tackled many of the vintage sewing patterns I have wanted to make for the longest time and as a result my handmade vintage wardrobe is in much better shape.
Vintage dresses were my most frequent make but I also had great fun with the some vintage undergarments and even a swimsuit!

“It’s very creased because it’s linen” - fun fact, linen only creases like mad nowadays because it’s woven on looms intended for cotton. Vintage linen (woven on linen-specific looms) won’t crease nearly as much because the weave was much tighter. Petition to bring back proper linen fabric! 😅

That is a cause I could absolutely get behind!

I believe linen used for bedding is possibly still woven on the old linen looms, as it barely creases and has a lot more "snap" if that makes sense. Might be worth buying bedding instead of "linen fabric" if that's your preference.

@@reivenne hm, I’ve had linen bedding and it creased as much... are you sure the ones you mean aren’t a blend of fibres?
I sometimes use bedsheets to sew, IKEA has these super gorgeous green ones that I can’t wait to turn into a dress 😀

This explains why vintage linen looks so much more beautiful! It is both interesting and crushingly sad. Thanks for sharing.

I'd suggest dyeing the white polka dot dress. It might feel a lot less "nursey" if it weren't white. Although, 2020 was the year of the nurse and midwife and like... boy did they get a workout this year.

Oh wow: “historical accuracy is not always better” I had already subscribed, but I always think, the seamstresses of yesteryear would have jumped on a zigzag machine (the overlocker might have been different for them, because it means throwing away tiny strips of fabric). But finishing a seam in minutes instead of hours?

Gently colour the white overlocking with a red sharpie, and maybe if you dye the ‘nurse’s’ dress a darker colour you might really love it x

Super productive beginning & end of my day today.
& blessed with the most timely rainstorm I can remember (just after I had done a draining & exhausting transplant & dragged myself ouy to move the trickling hose so the roots wouldn't rot, the sky opened up & the rain seemed to say "you've done your part, we've got this", and proceeded to soak the ground enough that the roots should have zero issues 😀👍
May work on snaps/poppers next, at least briefly

Gonna be honest. I don't think I'm going to make it through the whole 40 minute video just because I have some work to do soon and I want to check out the rest of your channel... but you are delightful while staying earnest. Really hoping to see more projects!

Try putting the slip in a mesh laundry bag (for delicates) before laundering to protect the slip's lace.

Goodness. I'm so looking forward to the remake and so happy to see this "starting place" because I'm in the process of learning to sew better. I learned the basics from my mom (the very definition of a rough-and-ready sewist of necessity) over two decades ago. Since then, I've wanted to flex my creative muscles and make things that make me feel good. Taking my time and learning better technique just makes everything look so much prettier!

Although you haven't been teaching face to face, your videos have been a great learning resource to me. Not just about sewing but the bigger picture. I don't have a disability but your sewing with a disability vid has lessons for all of us about our approach to life. Glad you're feeling better. I hope 2021 is a good year.
PS the 1940s pinafore is my fave.

Watching you make all these lovely things has been such a joy this year! You mentioned that the polka dot dress didn’t seem quite you when you wear it. I had an idea, (not sure if it’s a good one), and I thought I would share. The palette of the dress seams different from the rest of your pieces (cool and bright vs warm and cozy). If you dyed it a deeper color, it might pair better with other pieces or feel more at home with your other makes. Just a random thought. Happy 2021!

Was so lovely seeing all the things you've made this year. My favourite was definitely your white cotton slip and glad to hear you like wearing it. I'm looking forward to seeing how you finish your next projects and agree with your controversial opinion. Let's make garments with the best finishes available. I happen to have a bias cut slip on the table right now, deciding where to put the lace and will take a note from your experience. Thanks so much for sharing with us. Looking forward to what comes in 2021!!

Did you ever consider dyeing the spotted dress that you don't love? Perhaps in a dark color you'd like it more?

  • @Minnigirl1

for the 50s dress with the fabric you dont love, if its cotton you could overdye it. if the thread is polyester it will stay the same shade but the dress itself. there are loads of different natural dyes you could try. personally id use tea just to sorta make it a bit tan/brown. but there are loads of simple options out there

Thank you for sharing your makes for this year! I was wondering if the dress that you did the pattern testing for has had the pattern finished and put out for public use yet. I would love to see your one finished if you decide to do that. I really loved the look of that dress and would be interested to buy the pattern if it were available for sale...
[as an also fairly housebound besides going to a stupid number of doctors visits human] I would like to thank you for sharing what you've been comfortable with on the topic of disability and how it affects your sewing. It's very encouraging to see someone who seems most like myself, in terms of seeming to have to have bed days, be on this platform in the sewing genre. I know there are a few others out there but it's so helpful to have reminders that it's ok for things to not happen as quickly for me as our beloved Rachel Maksy seems to be able to magic out of her fingertips. [I know she really works very hard but I could still never do nearly a quarter of what she's able to do in her timeframes] I hope this doesn't come across as rude or insulting or like "oh good on you for soldiering through" or things like that. I just really appreciate your content and how forthright you are with what you've shared in that area.
Anyway... I'm glad you started a channel too and hope it continues to be a source of happiness and fun for you. :]
