nice video george . i think you have a lot of courage to cut the roof out of this van . i am curius about the further build . sorry for my bad english writing as i am from the netherlands .
Surely you have cut the rigidity out of the roof by cutting away the cross members and not bolting on a frame? Any videos I have watched show a rectangular frame being bolted onto the cut out perimeter of the roof. What material are you going to use for the sides? Onwards and upwards now. :))
The two steel cross bars add rigidity, the gutter where the roof racks would normally go is very strong which gives rigidity and supports the new roof, so it's all stable. I've got a 1000D canvas for the fabric, will have the next video out soon!
@@georgescott6671 I did exactly that on my mk4 transit … it works, the roof is a little heavy, and it acts as a bit of a bird bath, but it works, I am on here now looking for ways to add a lightweight ‘dome’ to the roof is convex and not concave. My advice to anyone would be buy a high roof van in the first place, but it has to be said the van is really nice with the top up.
omg! I would have never thought to use a jigsaw to cut the roof? What kind of jigsaw and blade are you using please? I see its the plug in kind, What are the amps please?
I think you should can this pop up top. Build a permanent top. The whole purpose is to stand up inside... in an enclosed top. Susu van restoration has a very good video on how he built a wood top.
Fair play to you George, it take some balls to cut the roof off your van, can't wait to see the end product, keep up the good work.👍
My van ain't got no roof !
Wicked idea it hurts my back watching you do all this without a workbench 👍😂😂
excellent video!! definitely deserves more views!
Perfect video ...

Your English was good enough! You can see the final build on my channel
Hey, great idea! How did you seal the roof around the edges, especially on the hinges' side? Are there any leaks when driving in the rain?
Brilliant!

If you have a side collision that thing will fold...2 bolts and a 1/2" crossbar isn't a good substitute for structural integrity..
@@joetaylor1459 so I'm not mad
That thing is not structurally sound and shouldn't be on the road..
Couldn't you use the cut off roof for the pop top?
You could try, though it's quite flimsy, and might be difficult to waterproof the gap where you've cut.

Yes. I felt the same
I want to see the rest of the built
it's all on my channel

You just need a jigsaw and a metal cutting blade, most jigsaws should do
Yes any jigsaw will do it with a metal blade let’s face it the roof is only made of 2mm sheet metal
Madness.
No disrespect; why didn't you just buy a hightop van!??
I wish I had!
Great idea but I bet it leaks.
This video should be banned People could hurt themselves and other people.. Don't try this at home that's not the way the job should be done
