  • In this short video I am going to show you exactly why your water heater is leaking and how to fix it.
    You'll Learn:
*Why your water heater is leaking.
    * Can it be repaired or will it need to be replaced.
    * How to stop the leak and get it fixed.
    * Step 4 is a bonus that can save you $600-$1000. Your water heater might be under warranty. The manufactures sometime use codes to let us know what year your water heater was manufactured and if it is still covered under warranty. If it is you might be eligible for a FREE water heater. I’ll give you instructions on how to properly figure this out at the end of the video.

I just want to thank you for the information provided in this video. Our water heater was dripping water from the inside, so we follow your directions to find out about its warranty. The warranty site was easy to find and provided the information we needed. Luckily, our water heater had coverage for one more year (2022). We took it back to the store and got a brand new one. Because of your information, we saved $550!!! THANK YOU!!!

Actually this video saved me some face because I thought it was my AC unit and turns out there was a leak in the hose, so per the video, I was able to turn off the valve and the water. THAN, I learned how much a water heater would cost me and I'm very rural, and didn't realize home depot does the work as well. So I was able to learn I had a GAS Heater, get the information from the heater, stop my leaking and got a home depot call going. I could try some of these other tips, but i'm "that girl" and do not wish to mess with things like this. WOOT, new subscriber

Thank you for this informative video. Our water heater has been pooling water at the bottom and the landlords have been dragging ass about fixing it. We already had no hot water 6 months ago and there was already a lot of rotting at that time that it was highly likely it needed replacing. The estimated time they are going to fix it will be a week from when we notified them. We are shutting off the water just to help the pooling from getting worse as I have asthma from previous apts with black mold and moisture issues. Given this video, it's likely they never serviced it.

this is what i have. installed three in my life - 2 gas one electric so I have some experience. this one is gas. I replaced this one with my own hands due to Sandy in 2012. Basement in NJ. all is copper. sharkbite cold. sweated hot out. sharkbites cold are in great shape. for the hot out, I have the niple, the copper threaded adapter, 4 inches of 3/4 pipe straight up and a 90. the seams of the 90 are leaking. green and corroded. after the 90, i have 1 foot of 3/4 and another 90. again 90 green corrosion and leaking. must be due to moisture in basement and 12 years lol. I want to hacksaw the pipe before the first 90. I want to sandpaper the 4 inch piece due to deposits and then sharkbite 90. after want to use use copper pipe and sharkbite 90 if i need to use a small sharkbite connector after the second 90 so be it. how do i deal with the hot water? good shut off on the cold water side. good ball valve. can shut building off if need to. I am comfortable with the the repair but not with the hot water. How do i repair an active gas hot water heater? thank you.

I have a gas water heater. I can light the pilot and then set the temperature, but after a few minutes it shuts itself off and we could not figure out why. After some observations, I noticed a drip of water splashing down into the flame ring area slowly over time, indicating that the inner liner is cracked or leaking... Apparently, there was a feature designed to automatically cut off the gas flow in this kind of situation.
I have two questions concerning this.
    Is this leak repairable?
Why was a leak of this type not covered in your video?

    • @gregoryhalye8907
      @gregoryhalye8907 5 месяцев назад

@ShaheenCooking-Vlog the cause was a small crack in the seam of the inner pipe that transferred the heat of the flames to the water chamber, allowing the water into the flame chamber. We found out that this is not repairable, even by the factory.
We ended up replacing it with a natural gas fired hot water on demand system (tankless). The capacity isn't huge, but it is only for a 1 person home/apartment.

Hi Brandon, my water heater is leaking from top. The leak is from the cold water intake side. It seems to me the hose that connects cold water supply and the tank is fine. It is the pipe that is coming from the tank and is connected to the hose. The leak is from the bottom of that pipe and I can see the rust forming from the bottom of the pipe. May I ask whether this is repairable? If so, how to do it? It seems from the video that you imply it is a fixable issue. But I do not know how to do it. Thanks!

Do you know how the damage occurred? You should not be storing miscellaneous objects on or near your water heater. The exterior shell is just enameled steel, duct tape will work to seal it up, underneath it is just the insulation layer.
As for the leak on top, if it is a screw-on attachment point that is leaking, you could try turning off your water and removing it, then add Teflon tape and put it back in... or replacing the bad connection or length of pipe.

Are there any tanks that are NOT steel?

There may be some options out there but we don't use them specifically so I can't speak on that. As for an on-demand water heater, there are some tankless options that have a recirculating pump but there are some recirculating pumps that can be plumbed into your system that will work for a tank system.

My water heater pilot went out, as I went to clean it below. Just a little moisture came out. It's not gushing water out. There is no build up of water. Very minimal moisture.

Sorry for not responding sooner, but the best thing to do in a situation like this is to shut off the water and gas to the water heater.

The guy who replaced our old water heater left the old one in our basement-just so it could take up room in our house. Is that normal?

Manda Cheung the water heater is most likely in of replacement. But, you can try and replace the elements first.

Is the hot water still working, just leaking out of there?
If no, get replacement heating elements to install, and continue reading through the yes response.
If yes (or you have the replacement elements), first turn off the water, then turn off your breaker for the water heater, and drain the water heater using the house outlet down bottom (garden hose to bathtub or outside, etc).
Next, unscrew the heating elements. If reusing, clean them off with a nylon brush if they are caked up, or just replace with new... wrap the threads with Teflon tape to provide a positive seal and reinstall (or wrap Teflon on the new ones and install).
Turn on water, bleed air out through the t&p valve or through your faucets, and then turn your breaker back on. (Dont turn on breaker without water in the water heater!)
Good luck! (This was posted in case others have this problem... in my case, I had no leak, it just had no working elements... in my old house. My replacement elements were only 35 dollars.)

You keep saying you and I agreed that maintenance it's important but what happened you just bought a house and the person that previously owned it then take care of the hot water making it seems like everyone who's watching this video doesn't understand the importance of maintenance
