The bit wasn't marked, I just used the bit that easily went in the old gear set and then gently drilled out the cavity in the new gear set; it was probably out by a thousandths of an inch. The new gear set, out of the package, simply doesn't fit the wheels/axles from the Proto without some sort of modification.

A significant detail. The size of drill used to ream out the gear. The appropriate size drill. WHAT’s the SIZE ?!
Just keep moving up drill bit sizes till it starts reaming out plastic. Test for fit and if it's still too small, move up one size.
