You're right, top head at 295 Hz sounds the best. Really interesting how only 5 Hz raise makes it lose the bottom end, and the difference is so clear. Thanks for the video!
Just ordered a tunebot - can't wait to play with it! I'm torn between the first settings at 350Hz and the 295 settings. Both are killer sounds. I'm sure the quality of drum doesn't hurt either. Great video!
Great comparison. I've been using the 295/400 tuning on my snare for some time and it works great. Just curious do you use the even tuning on toms as well? If so, what sizes are your toms and what top/bottom heads and tune bot tuning are you using? Thanks!
I used to use even tuning on toms. I'd be very anal about getting them perfect. More recently I've been using Udo's method for toms. That's basically - start with a pretty even tuning (head in tune with itself) - top and bottom. The pitch of the heads should be about the same. Then use a single tension rod on the top and the equivalent one on the bottom to adjust the pitch/sustain. If you drop the top one by a turn the pitch will drop and the sustain will decrease (since the pitch of the heads now differs) If you drop the same tension rod on the bottom by a turn the pitch goes down further and the sustain increases again (since the heads are now the same pitch again). This method works brilliantly for have quick control over those two elements.
Hey, Joe! Great video, great sound... I just have one question. Cann you please tell me what is the fundamental note of 295-400 even tuning? Thank you very much
Have you had any consistency issues with the G2 Joe ? The last few I've had have 'gone off' really fast. I've switched to the power center reverse dot.
Love how Udo one sounds @ 350 on the bottom(the 1st one). Very Bonham!

That's funny to see this, i had tuned my black beauty to 300hz and after a bit it stretched down to 296hz and i liked it there lol.

DAMN...nice boxy dry POP...VERY JB...!!! Surprised you did duplicate JB's head choice and try a Ludwig Supraphonic 402
Good video and great sound you achieved. Are you playing a supraphonic in this video?
Dave Barajas thanks. It's an Ian Paice signature which is based on the supraphonic
Thanks Joe, nice comparison video! What is the snare drum in this video?
Pearl Iain Paice signature model
I can't tune bottom side! what I'm doing bad??
It's hard to tune the bottom side to a pitch. Just put a couple of turns on each tension rod and it should be ok.
Okey Joe! Thank you!
Are those settings the lug frequencies or the whole head frequency?
lug frequencies
Cool comparison, Joe! What snare & heads did you use?
hazy ambassador on the bottom, Evans coated G2 on the top

no, they've been fine for me

Udo and 400 on bottom is the best
even sounds better

Who do you drum for?
WeAreThey Wishbone Ash
Nice! Not an easy gig, but fun!
This drum sounds that it's been muffled
Udo sounds much better
Do you use any type of damper in the snare?
Romulo M it's not needed with this method
