My favourite album ever. Every track is a winner, and Skin's voice is smooth, sexy and soulful. This album has been with me since it came out originally, amd i still listen to it regularly on Spotify. I've had this album in my life since I was 13 and I'm now 50! It's been with me through every up and down, and it means so much to me. On the off chance you're reading this, boys, thank you so much for everything. ❤
Graeme Skinner had a voice to die for, the band as a unit were tight as fuck the eponymous album was utter class and yet despite all of this they were criminally underrated…I say why lord?
My older sister's BF gave me this album and Lloyd Cole and the Commotions album when I was like 14 or 15. It started me on a musical journey and changed my life.
Lyrics: I ask the Lord and he said 'no' I say why, Lord I hear you're happy but it does not show Where wild things are, I dare not go I say why, Lord, I say why, Lord I say why Gimme strength, gimme patience Gimme will to survive Where the wild things are, I dare not go At first they make you happy, yeah, this I know But then they make you feel so low So low, so low, so low, I know Yeah, black money pays for suffering I don't need it I don't need it I don't need it I may be happy but it does not show Where wild things are, I dare not go I say why, Lord, yeah, I say why, Lord I say why I seen the fire and I touched the flame And given the chance I'd go right back again Hot summer rain burn me on the wheel Baptize me with fire You might also like Bad Thing Longing Yeah, black money pays for suffering I don't need it I don't need it Yeah, black money pays for suffering I don't need it I don't need it I don't need it I say why, Lord, I say why, Lord I say why, Lord, I say why Yeah, black money pays for suffering I don't need it I don't need it Yeah, black money pays for suffering I don't need it I don't need it Yeah, black money pays for suffering I don't need it I don't need it Black money pays for suffering I don't need it I don't need it I don't need it
Used to love escaping the up-itself London scene for a weekend in soulful, buzzy, gritty Glasgow BITD. Gallus locals, a great music scene and tons of talented musicians. For me, Hipsway was the sound of the city. I still get a rush whenever I hear Ask The Lord and Long White Car.
Never knew the bass player went on to form Texas until this weekend. Saw Hipsway at ‘The International 2’ A club in Manchester, promoting their debut album. Fantastic in every way. That Strat tone is to die for 🎸
Folk don't know what good music is these days after they've been brainwashed with Xfactor for so long. The only way they find out about great songs like this is if its featured on a tv show or a tv advert. Then they say who's here because of .........? Does my head in.
One of the best bands and albums of the 80s. Not many know them , but those of us who do , well we get it....
I used to listen to them in France in the 80s. Just cannot remember how come I went to discover them
Yes that was a big indie hit in France. Reminds me of my uni years@@stephanedajtlich

A band well before their time. Reminds me of my clubbing days in Glasgow.
Wonderful!!! I bought the 12 inch version when it first came out, it is still one of the prides of my collection.

Instantly taken back 35 years. God I loved this band when I was a kid.
Think I’ll be downloading this on iTunes in a moment😬

Existia uma danceteria aqui na cidade do Rio de Janeiro no fim dos anos 80 chamada PLAY HOUSE , onde está música virou HINO 👍

The Palais in Bathgate dancing to this with Jane Brown fae Crazyhill. Don't know why I let her get away. An absolute wee honey of a girl.
Have you been drinking...
I actually walked to the record shop in the rain to buy this. Fantastic band. Great sound.
I still kept the vinyl, one of the reasons I still couldn't throw out my old record player.
I've still got my vinyl at least.
Still got thé 12 inch but gutted I never found a Hipsway album.,.
85. Everywhere in Glasgow was playing this wall to wall you could not hide from Hipsway
Always our family favourite holiday song 😍
Lyrics:
I ask the Lord and he said 'no'
I say why, Lord
I hear you're happy but it does not show
Where wild things are, I dare not go
I say why, Lord, I say why, Lord
I say why
Gimme strength, gimme patience
Gimme will to survive
Where the wild things are, I dare not go
At first they make you happy, yeah, this I know
But then they make you feel so low
So low, so low, so low, I know
Yeah, black money pays for suffering
I don't need it
I don't need it
I don't need it
I may be happy but it does not show
Where wild things are, I dare not go
I say why, Lord, yeah, I say why, Lord
I say why
I seen the fire and I touched the flame
And given the chance I'd go right back again
Hot summer rain burn me on the wheel
Baptize me with fire

Great debut album, Ask The Lord class song, hard-edged white soul.

Great band! Saw them at the old Ritz in NYC in the 80’s
Absolute class, what more can you want
loved this when it came out ,no one really had those laid back sounding vocals that sounded so powerful ..
