I have been supplementing N-Acetyl Cysteine for a year and my ferritin halved. Please share any info on this.

Can iron overload cause gastritis? I have both……the saturation is still a little high and ferritin is lower. My gastritis makes my stomach burn

Absolutely yes. Gastritis is more common with iron overload

I have just had my 11 year old daughters blood work back a few weeks ago, it stated her Bilirubin was at 34 umol/L, Iron 28 umol/L, Saturation 41% & her Ferritin came back within normal range at 100ug/L
Over the passed few months she's been experiencing light-headedness, headaches and fatigue. Could her blood results be the cause of all of this? The Dr doesn't know and I'm at a loss as to what may be causing these physical symptoms for her. There seems to be much more information about low iron and the affects it has than high iron. When is it too high 🤷

Hi Toni - children do not normally suffer any impacts from haemochromatosis. I'm afraid we can't provide any information of a medical nature except to say that the iron studies results look normal. Those symptoms can apply to a multitude of conditions and causes. You should seek further medical advice from a professional if the symptoms persist.

My recent blood test showed a high level of Iron in my blood. My doctor put me on Folic Acid to lower my Iron levels. Is that common?

You only need one gene to be at risk.

My husband has hereditary haemachromatosis we got our adult kids tested they are all carriers what does that mean for them? My husband has blood taken off from time to time, however he’s type 2 diabetic now with heart issues AF

Carriers won't experience iron overload like someone who has the full haemochromatosis genes. Your children have inherited one affected gene from their father but a normal one from you which does the job of regulating iron properly. They might pass that gene on to their children but that is the worst that can happen.

My daughter in law has to much iron in her blood she wanted to donate some blood at the Red Cross ,they did not take her blood .What now? Does she have to die she is only 27

It depends whether she has had the genetic test to confirm she has haemochromatosis and the reason the Red Cross did not allow her to donate. Our InfoLine 1300 019 028 is available during business hours for information.

Plenty of other places that will do therapeutic phlebotomy- many times the blood banks need a physician's order stating that a person has a medical condition such as hemochromatosis that requires more frequent blood donations. In my area, the blood bank only allows donations every 56 days but if you r doctor sends a release that you need more frequent blood draws, they will accommodate you .

Your daughter in law needs to go see a hematologist so she can get a diagnosis. What I understand is that you don’t go and donate blood just like that, you need a doctor’s order bc they have specific instructions. When doctor told me he suspected I have this problem my husband got scared and told me to go donate blood but when a saw the specialist he told me I don’t have to do it. I hope your daughter in law gets better 🙌🏻
